Why Xiaomi’s standard voice recorder isn’t always easy to edit
Xiaomi Redmi smartphones are equipped with a built-in Dictaphone app that automatically saves voice notes in.m4a or.mp3 format. However, many users face a problem: after recording, you need to remove unnecessary fragments - pauses at the beginning, noise at the end or mistakenly recorded words, and standard MIUI tools do not always offer convenient options for cropping. Unlike flagship models (for example, Xiaomi 13 Pro), where the editor is built into firmware, the budget Redmi Note and Redmi A often lack this feature.
Another challenge is the audio file format. Xiaomi voice recorder recordings may have custom codecs (e.g. AAC-ELC) that not all third-party editors handle correctly, which causes the file to either not play back or lose sync with time stamps after being trimmed in a third-party application. Method 1: Built-in editor in MIUI (not available on all models)
Starting with MIUI 12.5 and later, some Xiaomi Redmi models have a built-in tool for basic audio cropping.
- Open the Dictaphone app (the microphone icon on your desktop).
- Select the desired entry from the list.

The editor interface is very simple: sliders at the beginning and end of the timeline allow you to select the desired fragment. Method 2: Trimming through the Music app (hidden MIUI function)
Little-known life hack: the standard MIUI Music app can cut audio files, including recordings from a voice recorder. This method works on all Redmis with MIUI 12+ firmware, but requires prior preparation:
- Transfer the audio from the folder MIUI/sound_recorder in Music (use Explorer or Files).
- Open the Music app and find your file in the Local Music section.

The advantage of this method is that it supports.wav and.flac formats, which Xiaomi does not record, but which can be imported from other sources. However, there is a caveat: if the recording is longer than 15 minutes, the application will offer to trim it in parts of 5 minutes.

Before you crop the file in the Music app, rename it by adding the character at the beginning of the name, which will lift it up the list and speed up the search.

Method 4: Trimming through Google Drive (for large files)
If the audio recording is over 100MB or longer than 30 minutes, third-party apps may refuse to process it.
- Upload the file to Google Drive via the mobile app.
- Open the file and select Open in → Google Audio.
- In the web version of the editor (opens in the browser), use the tool to Cut.
- Export the result back to your phone in.mp3 format.
Audio compression is a downside: Google converts files to 128 kbps, which significantly worsens the quality for professional records, but it is the only way to crop files up to 2 hours long without installing additional programs.
⚠️ Note: When downloading files to Google Drive with Xiaomi Redmi, disable the option Save Traffic in the application settings. Otherwise, files over 50 MB will only be downloaded over Wi-Fi, which can interrupt the process.

How to maintain sound quality after cutting
Cutting an audio file is always the risk of losing some data, so you can minimize the damage.
- 🎵 Use the original format: If recording from a voice recorder in.m4a, Keep the cropped version in the same format, rather than converting to.mp3.
- 🔊 Check bitrate: In the editor settings, select a bitrate not lower than 192 kbps for voice recordings and 320 kbps for music.

Cutting audio without loss is only possible if the editor supports Direct Cut mode, otherwise the quality will deteriorate even if it is kept in the original format.
