Owners of Xiaomi Redmi 4X smartphone often face a lack of free space for installing new applications and games. Built-in 16 or 32 gigabytes in modern conditions is not enough, especially given the appetite of multimedia services. Fortunately, this model supports the installation of microSD cards, which allows you to significantly expand the capabilities of the device. However, standard USB connection does not always solve the problem, since many programs still require placement in internal storage.
There is an effective way to make an external memory card part of the system partition, a process called adaptive storage or internal memory formatting, which is how Android starts to see the card as an integral part of the phone, allowing even system applications to be transferred there, and before you start to act, you need to understand the risks and prepare the device, because the process will irreversibly change the structure of the data on the media.
In this article, we will take a detailed look at each step of the procedure, consider the necessary tools and answer frequently asked questions. Proper execution of all steps ensures stable operation of your gadget and no errors in the future.
Preparation of the device and selection of a memory card
The first and most critical step is to choose a quality drive: to work in internal memory mode requires cards with high write and read speeds, classified as Class 10, UHS-I or higher, using cheap and slow cards will cause the phone to start running slowly and applications to take a long time to load.
Make sure to back up all the important data on the memory card. The process of preparing the drive involves its full formatting, during which all information will be irretrievably lost.
β οΈ Note: Once formatted with internal memory, the card will be encrypted and linked to a particular device, and you can't just insert it into another phone or computer to read data without re-formatting.
Make sure your Redmi 4X battery is at least 60-70% charged. Interrupting the formatting process due to battery drain can damage the file system and make it impossible to boot the operating system.

Use a memory card with a capacity of no more than 128 GB for the Redmi 4X, as larger drives can work unstable with the memory controller of this model.
Activation of Developer Mode for Advanced Settings
In some versions of the MIUI shell, the standard menu may hide the option of formatting for internal memory. To access full storage management functions, you need to activate developer mode. This is a standard procedure for Android devices that allows you to access hidden system settings.
To activate, go to the Settings menu, then select About Phone. Find the MIUI version and quickly click on it 7-10 times in a row. After a few clicks, a pop-up notification will appear that you have become a developer. Now a new Developer option will appear in the main settings menu, in the Additional section.
Inside the developer menu, we're interested in the memory behavior option. While this is often on by default in modern Android versions, settings checks are not superfluous. Find the option that allows you to force external storage to be written, if any, in your firmware version.
The process of formatting a card as internal memory
Once the memory card is installed in the slot and the required modes are activated, the system usually suggests formatting the drive itself. If the notification does not appear, go to Settings β Memory (or Storage). Select your memory card from the list of available devices. In the card management menu (usually called by pressing three dots or the menu button), select the Format option.
The system will offer two uses: portable storage or internal memory. Choose Use as internal storage. The setup wizard will warn you that all data will be deleted. Confirm the action and wait for the process to be completed. This can take anywhere from a few minutes to tens of minutes depending on the size of the card.
βοΈ Formatting checklist
Once formatted, the system may suggest moving existing data (photos, music) to a new volume, agree to this offer to free up space in the system partition, and then the phone can reboot to apply the changes.
β οΈ Warning: If the phone needs to restart after formatting, do not remove the memory card until the system is fully turned on.
Transfer applications and data to a new section
Once the memory is successfully combined, you need to move applications to make room. Not all programs support portability, but many system and user applications in MIUI allow that. Go to Settings β Applications β All applications.
Select the desired application from the list. If portability is possible, the Move or Change button (with storage location selection) will be active. Press it and select a memory card. The process can take time, especially for heavy games with a lot of data (cache).
For some applications, such as Telegram or Viber, you need to change the settings inside the application itself. For example, in Telegram, the path to the folder with media files changes in the Settings β Data and memory β The path to files. This will automatically free up gigabytes of space.
| Type of data | Transfer method | Efficiency | Risks. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photos and videos | Through the file manager | Tall. | Minimum |
| Annexes | Through Android settings | Medium | Possible launch errors |
| Cash messengers | Inside apps | Very high. | Absent. |
| System files | Automatically. | Depends on the OS. | High on failure. |

Transferring the messenger cache to the memory card is the most effective way to free up space on Redmi 4X without losing functionality.
Working with a file manager and folder structure
Once memory is combined, the file structure can become confusing. The standard MIUI Explorer allows you to see files, but for deep management, it is better to use advanced tools such as Total Commander or FX File Explorer, which allow you to see real paths to files that are now in the logical partition of the map.
It's important to understand that the path to files can change. Where there used to be /storage/emulated/0/, now some of the data can be physically located on another chip, although the addressing remains the same for the user.
Check memory occupancy regularly through settings. If the indicator indicates that the place is running out, first of all, clean the Download folder and the social media cache. The ext4 file system used in formatting for internal memory is less susceptible to fragmentation than FAT32, but control is still necessary.
Why can't some apps be moved?
Possible problems and ways to solve them
During operation, there may be situations when the phone stops seeing the card or the applications are not working correctly, often due to the memory card failure or loss of contact in the slot, try to remove the card, wipe the contacts and paste back when the phone is turned off.
If the system writes "mount error" or "damaged", it is possible that the file system has received errors, in which case it will require re-formatting, which will again lead to data loss. To minimize risks, use only proven memory card brands such as SanDisk, Samsung or Kingston.
Another problem might be the speed of the interface, so if you notice a lot of lags after you combine the memory, maybe your card's writing speed isn't enough to work as a system partition, and then it makes sense to go back to using the card as a portable drive by formatting it again.
β οΈ Warning: When selling your phone or sending it for repair, be sure to complete a full reset (Wipe) Data/Factory Otherwise, new owners will not be able to read your memory card, as it is encrypted with your deviceβs keys.
