Xiaomi and Redmi smartphone owners often face the need to hide personal information from prying eyes. Whether itβs confidential documents, family photos or work files, MIUI (and now HyperOS) offers built-in mechanisms to protect data. However, users often forget where exactly they hid files, or do not know how to access them after resetting or changing an account.
Searching for hidden objects in MIUI-based Android is not just a file name search; Xiaomi's system architecture uses special encryption and isolated containers; a conventional search through standard file search may not show results, as the contents of the hidden folder are technically invisible to standard requests without authorization; understanding the logic of the file manager is necessary for successful access recovery.
In this article, we will look at all possible ways to discover and open hidden data, and we will look at both standard methods through system applications and deeper ways to navigate the file system.
The mechanism of operation of the hidden folder in MIUI and HyperOS
The file-hiding feature in Xiaomi smartphones is implemented at the file system level using pseudonyms and encryption. When you move a file to a hidden folder, the system doesn't just change its attributes to "hidden." In fact, the file moves to a secure system partition that is only accessible through a special interface or after entering an encryption key, which provides a high level of security, but complicates the search if you forget the path.
The key element here is the privacy password. It's different from the screen unlock password and the Mi Account password. It's this code (or fingerprint, if it was tied) that is the only key to decrypting content. Without it, files remain a set of bytes in the system partition of MIUI/Gallery/cloud/secretAlbum or a similar path for documents.
β οΈ Note: If you reset your phone to the factory settings (Hard Reset) and did not know the privacy password or did not sync it with the Mi-account, it will be impossible to restore access to hidden files even with the help of a computer.
The system also uses a pseudonym mechanism to log into a hidden folder. In some versions of the firmware, to open a hidden folder in the explorer, you need to enter a special code in the search bar or pull the list of files down, this mechanism is designed so that even with an unlocked phone, a stranger can not accidentally stumble upon your personal data.

Hidden files in MIUI are stored in an encrypted system partition and are invisible without entering a privacy password or using a special gesture in the Explorer.
Search through a standard file explorer
The easiest and most obvious way to find hidden files is to use the File Manager app built in. However, it is not enough to open it. The interface is hidden from the eyes of the curious, and it requires the actions to be performed to activate it. Depending on the version of MIUI, the method may differ slightly, but the logic remains the same.
Open Explorer. Go to Documents, Images or Video, depending on what you're looking for. Now look at the top of the screen or the top of the file list. You need to swipe from the top down. This action activates the password field.
Once you enter the correct privacy password or fingerprint scan, a special "Hidden Files" window will open. Only objects that have been placed here by the user!
- π Images β all hidden photos and screenshots.
- π₯ Videos β Hidden Videos and Movies.
- π΅ Audio β Hidden music tracks and voice recordings.
- π Documents β PDF, TXT and other file formats.
If the swipe doesn't work, try looking for Hidden Files in your Explorer settings and activate the switch. In newer versions of HyperOS, access can be made to a separate application or security widget.
How to find hidden photos and videos in the Gallery
Media content is a special focus, and the MIUI is a cover for a Hidden Album, and the photos that get there disappear from the public feed and don't show up in the widgets, and you can only find them through the Gallery app.
The algorithm is similar to the conductor, but it has its own features: Open the Gallery app and go to the Albums tab. At the top of the screen, where the album names are listed (Camera, Screenshots, WhatsApp, etc.), you pull the list down, you will see a request for password entry or fingerprint scanning.
Once you've successfully logged in, you'll be taken to the hidden album section, which may contain entire folders that you created specifically for photos, and it's important to note that files deleted from a hidden album often end up in a shopping cart, which can also be password protected if you're enabled to sync with the cloud.
Where do the photos go after cleaning the cache?
If you use Mi Cloud cloud sync, hidden albums can be synced separately. Check the cloud settings to make sure the hidden album sync function is active, which will allow you to find files even if you lose your phone by logging in from another device.
Use of the Application Security
The central privacy management node in Xiaomi smartphones is the Security app, which is where you set your global password and encryption settings, and if you've forgotten what security you used, or if you want to change your access settings, you're welcome.
Log in to the security app (green shield icon) and find the privacy protection or hidden files section. It shows you how many files are hidden, how much space they occupy, and clicking on this item will also take you to a hidden file interface similar to that in the explorer.
This section not only provides you with the ability to find files, but also manage them: move back to open folders, delete or change passwords, and it also provides a "Switch Password" feature, which is critical if you remember old code but want to install a new one.
βοΈ Checking security settings
Note the "Second Space" tab in the same security menu, which is a separate feature that creates a full copy of the system with a different set of applications and files. The files in the Second Space are not visible in the main profile and are not "hidden files" in the classical sense, but users often confuse these concepts.
System paths and search through a computer
For advanced users who have access to the file system via a USB connection or root rights, it is possible to find hidden files via their physical path, but as mentioned earlier, without a password, you will only see encrypted data or empty placeholders.
When you connect your phone to your computer in file transfer (MTP) mode, hidden folders may not appear in Windows/macOS Explorer until you unlock them on the phone itself. Standard paths where content can live are as follows:
| Type of data | Possible systemic pathway | Password-free access |
|---|---|---|
| Hidden photos | /MIUI/Gallery/cloud/secretAlbum | No (encryption) |
| Hidden files | /MIUI/Gallery/cloud/secretFiles | No. |
| Second space | /data/cloned_app/.. | No (root requires) |
| Cash media. | /Android/data/com.miui.gallery | Partially. |
| Photo Photo | /MIUI/Gallery/cloud/secretAlbum | No (encryption) |
| Files. | /MIUI/Gallery/cloud/secretFiles | No. |
| Second space | /data/cloned_app/.. | No (root requires) |
| Cash media. | /Android/data/com.miui.gallery | Partially. |
If you have Root rights, you can use file managers like Root Explorer or Solid Explorer with root mode enabled, which allows you to see the actual file sizes and their location, but trying to manually copy these files to your computer without first unpacking through the MIUI interface will result in files with changed names (such as a set of numbers) and an extension that cannot be opened.
β οΈ Warning: Attempts to manually rename or move files in.secret system folders through Root access can damage the media database and lose access to them forever.
What to do if you forget the password from hidden files
The most difficult situation is when files are found (you know they are), but access to them is closed with a forgotten password. Unlike the screen password, Mi-account resets do not always work directly, but it is worth trying.
If you type in the wrong password several times, the system will suggest "Forgot your password?", and if you click on it, you will see the Mi Account attached. If you remember the password from your account, the system will reset your privacy password. Importantly, this method only works if the phone was connected to the Internet at the time the password was created and the binding.
If you don't have an Internet connection or your account is not tied, you don't have many options, you can try to enter the password you used earlier if you changed it, and you should also check if your privacy password is the same as your lock screen password, which many users choose when you first set it up.

Always write your privacy password to a secure location or use a password manager. The biometrics may stop working after you reboot your phone and the password will become the only key.
In extreme cases, if the data is critical and the password is not remembered, there are specialized data recovery services, but their effectiveness for encrypted MIUI partitions is extremely low, it is better to focus on finding backups in the cloud or on older devices.
