It's this code (or fingerprint, if it was tied) that is the only key to decrypting content. Without it, files remain a set of bytes in the system partition of MIUI/Gallery/cloud/secretAlbum or a similar path for documents.
⚠️ Note: If you reset your phone to the factory settings (Hard Reset) and did not know the privacy password or did not sync it with the Mi-account, it will be impossible to restore access to hidden files even with the help of a computer.
The system also uses a pseudonym mechanism to log into a hidden folder. In some versions of the firmware, to open a hidden folder in the explorer, you need to enter a special code in the search bar or pull the list of files down, this mechanism is designed so that even with an unlocked phone, a stranger can not accidentally stumble upon your personal data.

If you have Root rights, you can use file managers like Root Explorer or Solid Explorer with root mode enabled, which allows you to see the actual file sizes and their location, but trying to manually copy these files to your computer without first unpacking through the MIUI interface will result in files with changed names (such as a set of numbers) and an extension that cannot be opened.
⚠️ Warning: Attempts to manually rename or move files in.secret system folders through Root access can damage the media database and lose access to them forever.
What to do if you forget the password from hidden files
The most difficult situation is when files are found (you know they are), but access to them is closed with a forgotten password. Unlike the screen password, Mi-account resets do not always work directly, but it is worth trying.
If you type in the wrong password several times, the system will suggest "Forgot your password?", and if you click on it, you will see the Mi Account attached. If you remember the password from your account, the system will reset your privacy password. Importantly, this method only works if the phone was connected to the Internet at the time the password was created and the binding.
If you don't have an Internet connection or your account is not tied, you don't have many options, you can try to enter the password you used earlier if you changed it, and you should also check if your privacy password is the same as your lock screen password, which many users choose when you first set it up.
