Lost an important document, photo or video downloaded on Xiaomi Redmi? MIUI stores downloads in several places - and not always where you expect. Unlike "pure" Android, Xiaomi firmware categorizes files into categories: browsers store data in one folder, messengers in another, and the File Manager system may not show hidden directories at all.
The problem is complicated if you use third-party applications (like Telegram or VK) that create their own folders for downloads, and even after deleting a file, you can restore it โ but you need to know where Redmi stores temporary data. In this article, we will analyze all possible locations, including hidden system directories, and learn how to search for files even without root rights.
1. Standard Downloads folder in MIUI
The first place to look is the Download system folder, which is automatically created when you first download a file through a browser or some apps, and on Xiaomi Redmi, the path to it is this:
/storage/emulated/0/Download/
To open it up:
- ๐ฑ Open the Files app** (yellow folder icon with blue tag).
- ๐ In the Categories section, select Downloads (or Downloads in English). MIUI).
- ๐ If the folder is empty, check the filter by date โ it is possible that the files are hidden under the tab Recent.
Important: Some versions of MIUI 13/14 divide downloads into subcategories (e.g. Images, Documents, Audio). If you don't see the file you want, tap three dots in the top right corner and select Show Hidden Files.
๐ก
If the Download folder is missing, try downloading any file through the browser - the system will create it automatically.
2. Search through Xiaomi's System "File Manager"
MIUI File Manager is not just a guide, but a powerful tool with built-in search, which indexes files even in hidden folders (such as.thumbnails or Android/data), where many applications save downloads.
How to find:
- Open Files โ go to the Device tab (not Categories!).
- In the top search bar, enter a part of the file name or its extension (e.g.,.pdf or invoice).
- If there are no results, click on the icon. ๐ โ Extended search โ Enable the search option in hidden folders.
Note: Search MIUI does not search inside archives (.zip,.rar).If you downloaded an archive of files, first unpack it through the built-in tool (long press on the file โ Extract).
Why doesn't search find files?
3. Where to save files of popular applications
Each application on Xiaomi Redmi can use its own folder to download.
| Annex | The way to the folder | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome, Edge, Firefox | /Download/ | You can change the browser settings |
| Telegram | /Telegram/Telegram Documents/ or /Telegram/Telegram Images/ | Files are sorted by type |
| /WhatsApp/Media/ | Photos/videos from chat rooms are stored here, even if they were not downloaded manually. | |
| VK, OK. | /VK/ or /OK/ | Audio from messages is saved in /Music/ |
| Xiaomi Gallery | /DCIM/Camera/ or /Pictures/Screenshots/ | Screenshots and photos from the Internet can be duplicated here |
โ ๏ธ Note: Some apps (such as Instagram or TikTok) donโt save files to your phoneโs memory by default. To find their downloads, check the appโs settings. โ Saving and cache.

4. Hidden folders and system directories
MIUI hides some directories so users donโt accidentally delete important data, but thatโs where downloaded files can be stored โ especially if theyโre downloaded by a system app (such as Mi Video or Mi Music).
How to access:
- Open Files โ click on the three dots at the top โ Settings.
- Activate the option to show hidden files.
- Go back to the root catalogue (/storage/emulated/0/) Check the folders:.cache โ temporary application files; Android/data/ โ Game and program data (e.g. downloads from the PUBG Mobile); MIUI/ โ System firmware files (including boot logs).
The Android/data/ folder can store files downloaded through games or specialized applications (such as Torrent clients or FX File Explorer), but without root rights, you will not be able to view the contents of some subfolders.
Check.nomedia files (they hide media from the gallery)|
Look for folders with a dot at the beginning (e.g..download)|
View Android/obb/ โ there may be archives |
Sort files by date of change (new downloads will be at the top)-->
5. Search through a computer (ADB or Windows Explorer)
If you can't find a file on Redmi itself, connect your phone to your PC, which will help you bypass MIUI's restrictions on accessing some folders.
Method 1: Windows/macOS Explorer
- ๐ Connect Redmi to USB (Select the File Transfer Mode (MTP) notice-curtain).
- ๐ฅ๏ธ Open this computer. โ Find the Xiaomi device.
- ๐ Search by file name in the upper right corner.
Method 2: ADB-Teams (for advanced teams)
If the file is hidden even when you connect to a PC, use ADB:
adb shell
su
find /storage/emulated/0/ -name "part of the name"Replace the name part with a known filename snippet (e.g. invoice.pdf).
๐ก
USB connection often shows more folders than the built-in MIUI File Manager, which is due to firmware limitations on displaying system data.
6 Recovery of Remote Downloads
If a file has been deleted, it can be restored within 30 days (if the cart has not been cleared) or with the help of specialized utilities.
Option 1: The basket in the Files
- ๐๏ธ Open the Files appยป โ basket tab in the bottom menu.
- ๐ Find the file. โ Click Restore (it will return to the original folder).
Option 2: Recovery programmes
For deep memory scanning, use:
- ๐ฑ DiskDigger (no root required for photo/video);
- ๐ป Recuva or EaseUS (when connected to a PC).
โ ๏ธ Warning: after deleting the file, do not write new data to the phone - this reduces the chances of recovery. MIUI Security โ it permanently deletes files from the cache.
7. Set up the download folder by default
To avoid losing files in the future, change the standard download folder.
In the browser:
- Open Chrome โ Three Dots โ Settings โ Downloads.
- Click the Downloads folder and select a convenient directory (e.g. /Documents/Downloads/).
MIUI File Manager:
- Create a new folder (like MyDownloads) at the root of the memory.
- When downloading a file in a browser or messenger, select Save to... and specify this folder.
๐ก Tip: Use cloud services (Mi Cloud, Google Drive) to automatically sync downloads, so you can find the file even after you reset your phone.
