Why Download folder is disappearing on Xiaomi Redmi and where to look for it
Have you downloaded a photo, document or video but canโt find it on your phone? The Download folder (or Downloads) on Xiaomi Redmi smartphones often โhideโ due to the features of the MIUI shell. Unlike โpureโ Android, where downloads are stored in one place, here files can be distributed across different directories โ depending on the browser, messenger or application through which you downloaded them.
The additional confusion is created by the fact that MIUI Sometimes hides system folders from the user "for convenience." For example, after updating the firmware, the path to downloads may change from the user's "for convenience." /storage/emulated/0/Download on /storage/emulated/0/Downloads (And if you're using the Redmi Note, look at the "s" at the end! 12 Or, more recently, some files can be automatically sent to the Mi Cloud cloud and not visible in local storage.
In this article, we will discuss 5 proven ways to find a Download folder on any Xiaomi Redmi โ from old models like the Redmi 4X to the flagships Redmi K70.
Method 1: The standard path through the MIUI "Conductor"
The most obvious method is to use Xiaomiโs built-in file manager, but even here there are pitfalls: in some versions of MIUI, the Download folder can be hidden or renamed.
- Open the Files app (an icon with a blue folder). If it's not on the home screen, search the system (swipe down on desktop โ type Files).
- Go to the Device tab (or Local Storage in older versions of MIUI).
- Scroll down and find the Download or Downloads folder. If it's not, tap three dots in the top right corner. โ Show hidden files.
- If the folder is empty, check the subfolders: often browsers (such as Mi Browser) create separate directories inside Download like Browser or UCDownload.
โ ๏ธ Attention: Redmi with MIUI 14+ The path may look like /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.android.providers.downloads/files. It's not a bug, because it separates files by application, and to see this folder, you might need to enable the display of system files in the Explorer settings.
Check the "Recent" tab in the Files app
Enable the display of hidden folders in the settings
Make sure that files are not saved to the Mi Cloud
Try another file manager (e.g. Solid Explorer)

Method 2: Search through Googleโs File Manager
The built-in MIUI Explorer doesnโt always show all files, but the alternative is to use Googleโs official Files app (installed from the Play Market), which indexes memory better and finds lost downloads.
Instructions:
- ๐ฑ Install the Files app from Google.
- ๐ Open it and go to the review tab. โ Downloads. This is all the files that you downloaded from browsers and most apps.
- ๐ If the file is not available, then put it on โฎ โ Show internal memory and manually navigate download or download paths.
- ๐ Search by file name (the magnifier at the top of the screen) โ often faster than searching manually.
Important: Googleโs Files app may not see files downloaded through some Chinese apps (e.g. Xiaomi Community or Mi Video), in which case check the /MIUI/Download folder, which is created by the firmware for service downloads.

If you download files frequently via Telegram, check the /Telegram/Telegram Documents folder โ the messenger by default saves media files there, not in Download.
Method 3: Verification through browser settings
Each browser on Xiaomi Redmi can save files to its folder.
- ๐ Mi Browser โ /Download/Browser or /MIUI/Download/Browser
- ๐ Google Chrome โ /Download (but sometimes he creates /Chrome_Downloads)
- ๐ UC Browser โ /UCDownload or /UCDownloads
To find out the exact path:
- Open the browser through which the file was downloaded.
- Move to the โฎ โ Settings โ Downloads (or Downloaded files).
- Tap on any file in the list โ Open the folder. The system will automatically open the Explorer in the desired directory.
| browser | Typical path to downloads | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Mi Browser | /Download/Browser | Can create subfolders by file type (e.g. /Browser/Images) |
| Google Chrome | /Download | Sometimes saves to /Android/data/com.android.chrome/files/Download |
| UC Browser | /UCDownload | Can hide a folder from a standard conductor |
| Firefox | /Download or /Firefox_Downloads | The path can be changed in the browser settings |
โ ๏ธ Note: If you used Incognito mode in Chrome or Mi Browser, downloads could be saved in a temporary folder and automatically deleted after you close the browser).
Method 4: Search through ADB (for power users)
If standard methods don't work, you can connect to your phone via ADB (Android Debug Bridge) and manually check all possible download paths, which requires a computer and minimal technical skills.
Instructions:
- Download and install Platform Tools from the Android site.
- On your phone, turn on Settings โ About Phone โ MIUI version (tap 7 times to activate the developer mode).
- Return to Settings โ Additional โ For developers and enable USB debugging.
- Connect your phone to your PC, open the command prompt (Windows) or terminal (Mac/Linux) and type:
adb devices
adb shell
ls /storage/emulated/0/You'll see a list of all the folders in the root directory, and look for Download, Downloads, MIUI/Download, or Android/data/com.android.providers.downloads.
To see the contents of the folder, use the command:
ls /storage/emulated/0/DownloadIf the folder exists but is empty, check other possible ways:
ls /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/Download
ls /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.android.providers.downloads/filesWhat if the ADB canโt see the phone?
Method 5: Recovering โLostโ Files from Download
If the Download folder is empty, but you are sure that the files have been downloaded, you can try to restore them.
- ๐๏ธ The files were deleted through the โDumpster Cleanupโ in MIUI (The system often erases downloads older than 30 days).
- ๐ฑ The folder was moved to SD-map that was then retrieved.
- โ๏ธ Files are automatically uploaded to Mi Cloud (check Settings) โ Mi Account. โ Mi Cloud โ Downloads).
- ๐ After updating MIUI The paths to files have changed.
For recovery:
- Check the Recycle Bin: Open Files โ Recycle Bin. In MIUI, deleted files are stored there for 10 days.
- Use DiskDigger: Install the app from Play Market, select Full Scan and specify search in /storage/emulated/0/. The program will even find files deleted months ago (but the chances are lower if the phoneโs memory is heavily fragmented).
โ ๏ธ Warning: Do not install file recovery software on the same memory where the lost data was stored! This can overwrite it without the possibility of returning. SD-Map or cloud to install DiskDigger.

If files are missing after the MIUI update, check the /MIUI/Download/Backup folder โ sometimes the system creates it to back up downloads.
How to change the way you save downloads (so you donโt look for it again)
To avoid confusion in the future, set up a single folder for all downloads, which can be done through a browser or third-party applications.
For Google Chrome:
- Open Chrome, tap on. โฎ โ Settings โ Downloads.
- Select the folder to download and specify the path, for example, /Download/All_Files (Create it in advance in the conductor).
For Mi Browser:
- Open the browser, go to โฎ โ Settings โ Additionally. โ Download folder.
- Select Path Setting and specify your folder (e.g. /MyDownloads).
For all applications via FolderSync:
Install FolderSync and set up automatic file transfer from different Download folders to one shared one, which will help avoid chaos if you download files frequently through different browsers.
