Xiaomi smartphone owners often face a situation where they accidentally delete important photos or documents. Panic at such moments is a natural reaction, but the MIUI system and the new HyperOS interface provide several layers of data protection. Understanding how the Android shell file system works will help quickly recover what is lost.
Unlike computers where the shopping cart is visible immediately, on mobile devices, this item is often hidden in the depth of menus or integrated into cloud services. Xiaomi’s standard “Basket” in the shell works only for deleted photos and videos, but not for other types of files such as APKs or documents.
Many users mistakenly believe that there is a single system garbage can that covers everything remote. It's not. Android memory algorithms separate data streams. To effectively search for missing files, you need to check a few places, which we'll detail in this guide.
Recycle Bin in the standard Xiaomi Gallery
The most obvious place to look for deleted images is the built-in Gallery app, which Xiaomi developers left available but hid in a secondary menu to avoid cluttering the interface, where files are stored for 30 days before final removal.
To access the hidden storage, you have to open the app and switch to the Albums tab, and at the bottom of the folder list, after all the categories like People or Video, you have Deleted, and if you click on it, you'll see a list of all the images that have been erased in the last month.
This section provides basic management actions, so you can restore a single photo, click on all at once, or force the memory to be cleared, and it's important that if you delete the file from here again, you can't restore it with standard means.

The situation with documents, archives and app installers is radically different: Xiaomi’s File Manager doesn’t have its own built-in Recycle Bin for deleted files, and when you erase a document in this application, it disappears instantly.
However, newer versions of HyperOS and some MIUI 14 updates have integrated with Mi Cloud, so if you have sync enabled, deleted files can be temporarily in the cloud, and you can check this through your Mi Account settings.
For users who don't rely on the cloud, there is an alternative path through Google Files: It's a standard file management application that's often preinstalled or downloadable. It has its own mechanism to protect against accidental deletion.

Using Google Photos as an insurance option
Most Xiaomi smartphones have Google Photos installed by default, often as the main gallery and have their own shopping cart, which creates confusion, but also gives a second chance of recovery.
If you delete a photo from a standard Xiaomi gallery, it can stay in Google Photos, and vice versa.Removed items here also have a 30-day shelf life, and up to 60 days for Google One subscribers.
The interface is as simple as possible. At the bottom of the screen, there's a Library tab, and inside that, in the Utility block, there's a folder that you want to find, and you can either return the files to their original position or delete them permanently.

Recovery through the Mi Cloud
Xiaomi's ecosystem offers its own cloud service, Mi Cloud. If you have gallery sync enabled on your device, deleted photos can be stored on the company's servers, even if you reset your phone settings.
To check, go to your phone's settings, click on the top plaque with your Mi Account name, and select Cloud. Go to storage management or directly to the gallery. There's also a section with deleted elements.
The advantage of this method is that files do not take up space on the smartphone until you restore them. However, free space in the cloud is not enough (only 5 GB), so old deleted files can be replaced by new ones or require payment of a tariff.
⚠️ Note: If you reset your Mi Account or turn off sync before you delete it, files in the cloud may not appear.
Third-party recovery applications
When embedded tools are powerless, specialized tools come to the rescue, applications like DiskDigger or Recycle Bin can scan a device's memory for "simmering" data, but their effectiveness depends heavily on access rights.
Without Root rights, these programs can only find thumbnails (cache) of photos, not the originals in high resolution. Android blocks direct access to the memory sectors where the deleted file was stored, for security reasons.
If you choose to use these tools, be prepared for the fact that the interface may be overloaded with advertising and the results may not always be complete, but that may be the only way to find a thumbnail of a document or a blurry photo.

Prevention of data loss and setting up a backup

It is recommended to use a combined approach: synchronizing key folders with Google Photos and periodically copying heavy files to a computer or external hard drive, this method ensures the safety of data even if the smartphone is completely broken.
Also worth paying attention to the Advanced Cleansing settings on your phone. Often, the built-in cleaner can automatically delete files from the bin if they take up a lot of space without asking the user.
