Today’s Xiaomi smartphones take thousands of pictures, and it often happens that the desired image disappears from the main gallery. Users start to panic, believing that the data is lost forever, but the Android operating system and the MIUI shell (or HyperOS) have built-in backup mechanisms. Most often, the photos are automatically stored in cloud storage, which can be accessed directly from the device.
File recovery depends on which sync service was activated at the time of shooting, whether it’s a proprietary cloud from Xiaomi Cloud or a standard service from Google – Google Photos. Understanding the differences between these platforms will allow you to quickly localize the missing photos and return them to the device without using a computer.
In this guide, we will take a detailed look at image search algorithms through standard applications, check synchronization settings, and look at manually accessing hidden folders, learn to distinguish between types of storage and use specialized tools for maximum results.
Checking the synchronization activity of Google Photos
The first and most likely place to store your photos is Google Photos. On most Android smartphones, this app is installed by default and often takes precedence over other backup services. If you have previously logged in to your Google account, there is a high probability that your photos have already been uploaded to the cloud, even if you don’t know it.
To start checking, open the Google Photos app on your Xiaomi phone. Pay attention to the top right corner of the screen: there should be a round avatar of your profile. If there are no error icons or warnings next to it, then the service is working normally. Click on the avatar to see the storage status and current account.
In the menu that opens, look for Photo Settings or Autoboot Settings, which is where key information about which device folders are being sent to the cloud is stored. Often users forget that they have disabled the sync for the WhatsApp, Telegram, Viber folders, and search for missing images in the main albums, although they are in a separate section.
It is important to understand the difference between the quality of the save. the service can store photos in the mode "Save space" (compressed) or "Original" (full quality). Image search is available in both cases, but restoration to the original resolution is possible only if you have selected the appropriate setting or you have a subscription to Google One.
Search for images in the service Xiaomi Cloud
Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco smartphone owners have access to the manufacturer’s own cloud storage, a native tool that is deeply integrated into the system and often works more stable than third-party counterparts when using Wi-Fi networks in a particular region.
Go to the standard Gallery app on your device. At the bottom of the screen or in the side menu (depending on the MIUI version), find the Cloud tab or cloud icon. If you see a sign-in message, enter your Mi Account details. This is where the albums synced to the company's servers are stored.
Xiaomi’s cloud interface allows you to filter content, so you can switch to viewing only photos that are stored remotely, hiding local copies, which is especially useful if the phone’s memory is crowded and you’ve deleted the originals, leaving them only in the cloud.
💡
If you changed region in your phone settings, access to Xiaomi Cloud may be limited. Return the China region or the one where the account was created to see all the data.
It is worth noting that free space in Xiaomi Cloud is limited (usually 5 GB). If the limit is exhausted, new photos will stop downloading, and you will need to search for them in local memory or in the basket if the deletion occurred recently.
Recovery algorithm from the cart and archive
Often, users search for photos in the cloud, believing that they are deleted, when in fact files are simply moved to the buffer zone. In the Android ecosystem, there is the concept of a Recycle Bin, where deleted files are stored for 30 to 60 days before final erasure.
In the Google Photos app, go to the Library tab in the lower right corner, and you'll find the Recycle Bin, and you'll find all deleted images inside of this section, and you'll just select the right frames and click on the Restore button to return them.
The same feature is found in the Xiaomi gallery: Open albums, scroll to the bottom of the list, and find the Deleted folder. The same rules apply here: files are available for recovery within a month, but if you manually cleaned the cart, it will not be possible to find data using standard methods.
☑️ Pre-reconstruction checks
Special attention should be paid to the Archive section in Google Photos, where users often accidentally send up the images, after which they disappear from the shared tape, but are not deleted. Archive check is a must if the photo is lost in sight, but not found in the basket.
Using Web Versions of Cloud Storage
Sometimes a mobile application may not work properly due to cache or sync errors, and in such cases, the most reliable way to find lost data is to use the full web version of the service through the Chrome browser or Mi Browser on your phone.
To check out Xiaomi Cloud, go to i.mi.com. Sign in to your account. The web interface often displays files that have not yet been displayed in the app due to a delay in indexing, and upload photos directly to your computer or other storage.
For Google services, go to photos.google.com. The web version is wider than the mobile app, and it has powerful searches for objects, people, and even text in images. If you remember what was in the photo (such as “passport” or “cat”), just type that word into the search box.
Why is the photo not in the app, but in the browser?
Using PC Version mode in a mobile browser can give you access to additional display settings, which is useful if the mobile version interface is stripped down or contains bugs, and remember to log out after the session is over, especially if you use someone else's device or public Wi-Fi.
Analysis of local folders and hidden directories
Not all images are automatically sent to the cloud. Some applications create their own directories that are not marked for default sync. To find these files, you need to use a file manager, such as Xiaomi Explorer or Files by Google.
Go to the root of internal memory and open the DCIM folder. This is where the standard camera albums are located. However, if you're looking for screenshots, downloads from instant messengers or edited versions, look in the Pictures, Download or Android/media folders. The path structure may vary depending on the Android version.
You should pay special attention to hidden folders. Xiaomi file manager has a function "Hide albums." Check the settings of the gallery: perhaps the desired album is simply hidden from prying eyes and does not appear in the public list.
| Type of folder | The way in the system | Synchronization |
|---|---|---|
| Camera. | /DCIM/Camera | Automatically. |
| Screenshots | /Pictures/Screenshots | Partially. |
| /Android/media/com.whatsapp | Only the media. | |
| Telegram | /Android/media/org.telegram | No (default) |
If you use third-party launchers or file managers, the paths may be displayed differently. In newer versions of Android, access to the Android/data folder is limited by system permissions, so special rights or advanced file managers may be required to view the content of some applications.
Solving synchronization and search problems
There are times when the photo is physically in the cloud, but the phone refuses to show it, most often due to an unstable Internet connection or a malfunction in the background services. First of all, check if the mode is on "Saving traffic", which blocks the download of media files through the mobile network.
Try clearing the cache of the Gallery and Google Photos app. Go to Settings → Apps → All apps, find the service you want, and select Clear Cache. This action is safe and won’t delete your photos, but will make the app request the list of files from the server again.
💡
If the photo is missing after resetting the phone, it will only recover after full synchronization, which can take several hours with a large amount of data.
Also make sure the device has the correct time and date. SSL-certificates, which causes the cloud storage server to refuse connection, and the gallery displays an empty screen.
⚠️ Warning: Never delete files from the.thumbnails folder or gallery system caches manually through the file manager unless you are sure of your actions. This can damage the thumbnail database and the phone will stop displaying preview images, although the files themselves will remain intact.
In case none of the methods worked, it is possible that the photo was permanently deleted or never uploaded to the cloud due to a network error at the time of shooting, in such cases, it is recommended to check backups on other devices where you signed in to the same account.
