Xiaomi and Redmi smartphone owners often face the challenge of finding stored documents, photos or archive files inside the system. The standard MIUI shell and the new HyperOS have their own specific storage structure, which may differ from the usual “pure” Android. Understanding where the data is physically and logically located saves time and nerves.
Searches can go in many ways, from simple downloads from the Internet to system backups, in some cases files can be hidden by the user or automatically moved by the system for optimization, and we can look at all possible scenarios and places where you should look for lost or hidden data.
First, you need to figure out what you're looking for. ZIP-Document archive, hidden photo folder, or even system backup of applications. Explorer is the primary tool for navigation, but its capabilities go far beyond just browsing folders.
Using a standard Explorer to search for files
The main tool for navigating the file system is the File Manager application, which is where most of the user data is stored, and to find a specific archive, for example, with the.zip or.rar extension, you just run the application and use the built-in sorting.
At the top of the interface you will see categories: pictures, videos, music, documents and APK-By clicking on Documents or Archives, the system filters out the contents of internal memory. The Android file system is designed so that downloads from the browser most often go to the Download folder, and documents from messengers to the corresponding application directories.

- 📁 Check the folder. MIUI → Download if files were downloaded through the built-in browser.

Sorting is a special consideration. You can organize files by size, date of change or name. If you're looking for an old archive, sorting by date will help you quickly cut off the extra one. Remember, the internal memory of a smartphone can contain hundreds of system folders, so it's best not to delete files with unknown names.
Finding hidden files and folders in MIUI
File hiding is a popular way to protect personal information from prying eyes. On Xiaomi smartphones, this process is implemented through a special mechanism that makes files invisible for standard viewing. To see such data, you need to know the password or use biometrics.
Hidden files are not displayed in normal mode of the Explorer. They are placed in a secure partition, which is accessed through a special gesture or code entry. If you previously hid archives but forgot how to return them, try swiping up in the Images or Video folder inside the Explorer.
To manage hidden objects, go to the Explorer settings. There's the Hidden Files section. Log in to this section requires proof of identity. Data security is encrypted, so without a password or fingerprint, you can't access the content.

Working with the Recycle Bin and recently removed items
Accidental deletion of important documents is a common problem, and fortunately, the MIUI shell has a Recycle Bin that saves deleted files for a certain period of time, usually 30 days, after which the data is permanently erased.
You can find the Recycle Bin directly in the Explorer app. There's a section at the bottom of the screen or in the side menu (depending on the OS version), where all remote users are stored.......... files: images, videos, audio and documents. Recover files from the Recycle Bin in one click.
It's worth noting that the bin takes up space in the internal memory. If you delete a heavy archive, it still takes up disk space until it's permanently deleted. Regularly cleaning the basket helps to free up space, but makes it impossible to recover random deletions.

Search for system backups and application archives
Xiaomi smartphones can create full backups of the system and applications, and this data is stored as archives, which occupy a significant amount of space, and you can find it by the way MIUI → backup → AllBackup. Inside this folder are folders with backup dates.
System archives contain settings, application lists, SMS, call history, and sometimes application data. If you're looking for where a few gigabytes of memory went, you probably have a good answer here. Backup is a useful feature, but old backups are better off on your computer.
To create a new copy or view the details of an existing one, use the settings menu. Go to Settings → About Phone → Backup and Restore. Here you can manage archives, delete them or create new ones. Backup files have the.bak extension and are not designed for manual editing.

Move the AllBackup folder to your computer or the cloud immediately after you create the backup, which will free up space on your phone and protect the data in case the device breaks down.
Hidden folders of messengers and applications
Many users are unaware that messengers like Telegram, WhatsApp and Viber create their own folders at the root of internal memory, often where the received files are lost that do not appear in the gallery, for example, archives of documents from Telegram by default can be hidden.
In Android 11 and later, access to the Android → data folder is limited to third-party applications, but Xiaomi’s standard Explorer still sees the content. This is where cached files and downloaded archives are often hidden (Android/media or Android/data).
If you're looking for a file that you've been sent but it's not in Downloads, check the folder of a particular app. For example, for Telegram, the path often looks like Telegram → Telegram Documents. For WhatsApp, it's WhatsApp → Media → WhatsApp Documents.
The folder structure may change after you update your applications or operating system, so if you don't find files in the usual way, use a global search for the file name throughout your device.
