Modern Xiaomi and Redmi smartphones are equipped with a powerful security system that allows you not only to block access to the device, but also to hide confidential files from prying eyes. The Hidden Album feature in the standard MIUI Gallery is the perfect tool to protect personal photos, screenshots of documents or videos that you do not want to show to guests or children. Unlike simple deletion, hiding allows you to keep files on the device, making them invisible in the general stream.

Activation of the hidden album function in the settings
Before you transfer files, you need to make sure that the function itself is activated in the system. By default, on some global firmware versions, this section may be hidden or require an initial account setup. To start, open the standard Gallery app and go to the Albums tab.
Swipe your finger from top to bottom until the lock icon appears. If it doesn't appear, it may be disabled in the app settings. Click three dots in the top right corner and select Settings. Here you need to find the Hidden Album section and activate the switch. The system will require you to link your Mi Account to restore access in the event of a device change.
Once activated, you will be asked to install a pattern lock or use fingerprint unlock. Importantly, this key will be different from the screen lock key, although it may be the same for convenience. Remember to do so, as it is almost impossible to restore access without an associated account.

Creating a new hidden album and transferring files

You can also create completely isolated folders inside a hidden gallery, and by going to a hidden album (swipe down + password), you can create new folders, like Documents, Personal, Work, which allows you to structure the hidden data and not mix it into a pile.
When moving large video files, the process can take some time, the system actually changes the path to the file and applies encryption to it, and it is not recommended to interrupt this process to avoid damaging the media file. Once completed, the originals in the shared gallery will be deleted.

Using a Hidden Folder in File Explorer
It's worth noting that a hidden album in the Gallery is not the same as a hidden folder in System Explorer. There's a separate Hidden Files feature in MIUI that works at the file system level. To get there, open the Explorer app, go to the Fiddles tab and swipe again from top to bottom.
Here you can hide entire directories that are not necessarily photo albums, like a PDF folder or a personal email, and the login mechanism is similar: swipe down and enter a password, and files inside this zone are not displayed in any application until you unlock access.
The difference between the two is the level of access: the gallery is optimized for media viewing, has slideshow mode and editing, the Explorer works with any type of data, and for maximum privacy, it is better to use System Explorer, since it hides files from indexing by other applications.

Working with Google Photos and Third-Party Clouds
Users accustomed to the Google ecosystem often wonder about compatibility. The Google Photos app has its own Locked Folder function, which works independently of the Xiaomi system gallery. If you move a photo to a hidden MIUI album, Google Photos will stop seeing these files and, accordingly, will not upload them to the cloud unless special sync is set up.
This creates a double layer of protection or confusion. If you want your hidden Xiaomi photos to automatically go to Google’s secure cloud, you need to first unlock the hidden album, copy the photos to a regular folder, and then move them to the Locked Folder inside the Google Photos app.
However, for local storage on the device itself, Xiaomi’s hidden system album is preferable: it is more integrated into the shell, consumes less battery life during background permission checks, and does not require additional software to be installed, and it can be accessed through a fingerprint faster than unlocking a separate application.

Restoration of access and resetting of password
The most critical situation is a forgotten password, because the files in the hidden album are encrypted, you can't just "reset" the password without losing data unless you have preset the function, and when you first turn on the function, the system insists on linking the Mi Account and the phone number.
If you've forgotten your pattern lock, click on the "Forgot Password" button on the input screen, and the system will prompt you to send the confirmation code to the associated phone number or email, and after you enter the code, you'll be asked to install a new key, and all files will remain in place.
If the phone was reset to factory settings or the account was not tied, it is impossible to restore access to the hidden album. This is a feature of security implementation: the encryption key is stored in a secure memory area and is tied to the account, without which data becomes digital garbage.
⚠️ Warning: Never completely reset your phone without unlocking a pre-hidden album and untieing it from your Mi Account in the settings. Otherwise, you will lose access to files forever, even knowing the password, as the encryption keys will be destroyed.
Features of work in different versions of MIUI and HyperOS
The interface and arrangement of elements may vary slightly depending on the operating system version. In older versions of MIUI (10, 11), the hidden album was logged in through long-term clicks on the Gallery app icon or through settings. Modern versions (MIUI 13, 14, HyperOS) have a unified downward piling method.
Global ROM owners may experience a lack of some features found in the Chinese version (CN ROM), such as the ability to hide albums as a whole, not just individual photos, sometimes only available in Chinese build or requiring activation through an engineering menu.
