Owners of Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco smartphones often face the challenge of finding a stored record of an important dialogue. The standard MIUI or HyperOS call interface hides files deep in the system folders, which causes difficulties for users. Finding the right track can be a real puzzle if you do not know the exact algorithm of actions.
Android tightens security policies every year, restricting direct access to the microphone during a call, which is why conversation records are now stored in specific directories that are not always visible immediately after you connect the phone to your computer.
In this article, we will take a closer look at all possible paths to audio files, explain the difference between Android versions, and suggest alternative archiving methods, and learn not only how to find files, but how to organize them properly for quick access in the future.
Standard path through the Calls app
The fastest and most obvious way to listen to a recent conversation is to use the phonebook's built-in functionality, which requires no file system connection and works even without the Internet, but is only convenient for listening, not for transferring files.
Open the Phone app (green handset) and go to the History or Journal tab, find the contact you were talking to, and if the recording was successful, a tape icon or a small listening icon will be displayed next to the number or under the subscriber's name.
Click on the speaker icon or select Listen to Record from the contact menu. You'll see a built-in player where you can pause, rewind the track or delete it. You'll need to go to files for more complex operations, such as renaming or sending.
๐ก
If the recording icon is missing, it is possible that the auto recording function was disabled at the time of the call or that you ran out of free memory on the device.
It is important to note that this method only shows the โwrapperโ of the file. To actually copy or edit the audio, you still have to search for a physical file in the deviceโs memory, which we will discuss in the next sections.
Searching for Files through โConductorโ: Exact Pathways
The File Manager system application is a major challenge to access the files themselves, as the paths vary depending on the Android version and regional firmware. The older versions of MIUI (before Android 10) were simple and straightforward.
With Android 11 and up, Google has closed the /Android/data root folder to third-party applications. However, Xiaomi's system explorer usually has the necessary permissions. You need to go to storage and open folders sequentially.
There are two main ways that your audio recordings can lie, the classic one, the new one, introduced for security reasons.
- ๐ Internal memory. โ MIUI โ sound_recorder โ call_rec
- ๐ Internal memory. โ Android โ data โ com.android.soundrecorder โ files โ Recordings โ Call_rec
- ๐ Internal memory. โ Recordings โ Call_rec
If you donโt see the Android folder or the data folder inside it is empty, it means that you are using a third-party Explorer without special permissions, in which case use the built-in Explorer from Xiaomi, which displays the contents of the system directories.
Why can the data folder be empty?
Files in these directories are usually.m4a or.mp3, and can be named by the date and time of the call, or by the contact name if it was saved in the phone book at the time of the call.
Use of the Dictator app
Unlike many other manufacturers, Xiaomi has integrated the conversation recording function directly into the system's Dictaphone app, a centralized storage facility where all audio generated on the device is collected, and can be found through a general application search or in the Tools folder.
When you start an app, look at the tabs at the top or bottom of the screen, and you're interested in the phone or the call section, and you're looking at the date-sorted list of all the recorded dialogs, which is the most convenient interface for navigating history.
Clicking on a particular record will show you additional options, not only listening to the file, but also sharing it via messengers, sending it via Bluetooth or email, and setting the record to the call signal is also available.
โ๏ธ Checking the settings of the recorder
The advantage of this method is that the application automatically indexes files even if they were manually moved to a standard folder, but if you delete a file from the explorer, it will also disappear in the recorder, since it is only an interface for accessing data.
Access from the computer via USB-cable
For mass copying of records on PC is most convenient to use USB-Connect your smartphone to your computer and select file transfer mode on your phone screen (MTP). After connecting, open โMy Computerโ and find your device.
The problem is that when you connect over USB, Windows often doesn't show the contents of the Android/data folder because of the OS's security limitations. You'll see the folder, but it'll be empty. In this case, there's a workaround.
Use the built-in Hidden Files feature in Windows Explorer, although this rarely helps with Android system limitations.A more reliable way is to use the command line or special utilities, but for the average user it is easier to copy files through the cloud or send them to yourself in Telegram.
| Access method | Access to Android/data | Transmission speed | Convenience |
|---|---|---|---|
| The conductor on the phone | Complete. | Tall. | Average. |
| USB cable (Windows) | Limited. | Very high. | Low. |
| Cloud services | Depends on synchronization. | Low (network dependent) | High. |
| Application Dictator | Just watching. | Instant. | High. |
If it is critical for you to copy files through a cable, try using the Android File Transfer program or analogues that have extended file system access rights.
Cloud sync and Xiaomi Cloud
Modern smartphones offer automatic data synchronization with the cloud, and in the Xiaomi ecosystem, Xiaomi Cloud (Mi Cloud) is responsible for this, and if this feature is activated, your records can automatically be uploaded to the server, freeing up space on the phone.
To check this, go to Settings โ Mi Account โ Xiaomi Cloud โ Recorder. If the switch is active, your records are accessible from any device via the browser at i.mi.com. This saves you in situations where the phone is lost or damaged.
โ ๏ธ Warning: Cloud space is free limited (usually 5GB).Store heavy audio conversation files can quickly exhaust the limit, so watch out for filling in.
Also worth mentioning are third-party cloud services like Google Drive or Yandex.Disk. They donโt sync call records automatically out of the box, but you can set up an automatic download of folder content. call_rec through their applications.
Configure automatic recording and formats
To avoid worrying about manually turning on the record, you should set up automation. In the Dictaphone app, click on three dots (menu) and select Record Settings. Here you can activate Autostart Record for all numbers or only for selected contacts.
Pay special attention to the save format. MP3 format is more compatible with older devices and players, but takes up more space. AAC (or M4A) format provides better quality with a smaller file size, which is true for devices with a small amount of memory.
Newer versions of MIUI have added a Quiet Record feature, which, if enabled, will not hear the signature clicks or voice notifications to start recording, but the legal aspect of using this feature depends on the laws of your country.
๐ก
The best format for archiving important conversations is MP3 with a bitrate of 128 kbps, as it is guaranteed to open on any device even after 10 years.
Be sure to check if you have a limit on recording unknown numbers, which is useful for filtering spam, but can lead to the loss of important information if you are waiting for a call from a new customer.
Solving problems with lack of records
Users often complain that the feature is enabled but files are not created. The first reason is the overcrowded app cache. Go to Settings โ Apps โ All Apps โ Recorder โ Memory and click Clear Cache. This won't delete your records, but can fix work errors.
The second reason is the permission conflict, and after the system update, the app may lose the permission to use the microphone or write to memory, check the permissions section of the app properties and make sure that all the switches are active.
โ ๏ธ Note: On smartphones purchased in India or Indonesia, the recording function of conversations may be software-locked at the system level due to local legislation.
If nothing works, try resetting the Phone and Dictator app settings to factory settings. At the very least, install a third-party app to record calls from Google Play, although their Android 11-14 performance is often unstable due to OS limitations.
Also make sure there is free space on the phone. If the memory is 100% full, the system will not physically be able to create a new audio file, even if the recording process is visually underway.
