Did you take a picture on Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 or POCO X5 Pro, but can't find it? Or did you suddenly disappear old photos after the MIUI update? The problem with finding media on Xiaomi smartphones is more common than it seems - and not only the user's inattention, but also the peculiarities of the MIUI file system, where photos can be stored in 4-5 different places at the same time.
In this article, we will analyze in detail all possible photo storage locations on Xiaomi, Redmi and other devices. 1. Standard photo storage folders on Xiaomi
By default, all images taken through the standard Camera app are stored in the device’s internal memory or on the device’s internal memory. SD-map (if installed) Major folders that are worth checking first:

On devices with MIUI 14 and later, the path may be different due to changes in the storage structure, but the principle remains the same. For example, on some POCO models, the DCIM folder may be called Camera in the root directory, to find out exactly the path:
- Open the Files app (yellow folder icon).
- Go to the Category section → Images.
- Click on the three dots in the upper right corner and select Show Path.
⚠️ Attention: If you are using SD-The map as the main storage, the path to the photo will begin with the /storage/XXXX-XXXX/DCIM, where XXXX-XXXX — Do not retrieve the card while the camera is running, which can result in the loss of recent images.
2. Hidden folders and system directories
Some apps (like Facebook, VK, or Snapchat) store media files in hidden folders that don't show up in the standard gallery.
- 🔍 /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/ — And here, each program creates a folder (like com.facebook.katana for Facebook), and there's often a cache subfolder or a file with a photo inside.
- 🔍 /storage/emulated/0/.thumbnails — The photos are not stored here, but sometimes you can find smaller copies.
- 🔍 /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/ — system folders MIUI, where temporary camera files or screenshots for album covers may lie.
To see the hidden folders:
- Open Files → Click on three points → Settings.
- Activate the option to show hidden files.
- Go back to the root directory and check folders whose names start with a dot (e.g..nomedia).
Files in folders Android/data/ Readable without root permissions. If you need to copy them, connect your phone to your PC and use Windows Explorer or macOS — some folders will only be accessible through the use of a folder. USB-connection.

If the gallery does not show a photo from hidden folders, create an empty file in the image folder with the name.nomedia (without extension) – this will cause the system to ignore it when scanning.
3.Mi Cloud Cloud Storage
Mi Cloud is a Xiaomi cloud that automatically syncs photos when the feature is enabled, and check if your photos are saved to the cloud.
- Open your Settings → Xiaomi Account → Mi Cloud.
- Make sure the gallery sync switch is active.
- Go to Gallery → Albums → Mi Cloud (or open the web version of i.mi.com).
Features of working with Mi Cloud:
- 📤 Free 5 GB (that’s about 1500 high quality photos).
- 🔄 Synchronization only works when connected to Wi-Fi (by default).
- 🚫 If you delete a photo from your phone, it will also disappear from the cloud (unless Backup is enabled).

⚠️ Note: If you log out of your Xiaomi account on your phone, all unsynchronized photos from the Mi Cloud folder in the gallery will disappear. To avoid losses, copy them to another location before leaving (for example, on a PC).
4. Search for photos after resetting or updating MIUI
Once reset to factory settings or updated MIUI, photos may disappear from the gallery, even though they remain physically on the device.

If the photos are not displayed in the gallery, but you are sure that they are on the phone:

- Enter the extension.jpg,.png,.heic (for iPhone photo) in search.
- Check the /storage/emulated/0/Pictures/.thumbnails folders – sometimes thumbnails remain even after the originals are deleted.
On devices with MIUI 13+ After the update, a bug may work, in which the gallery does not see the photo on the SD-The decision:

5. Duplicate photos: why they appear and how to remove them

⚠️ Note: Do not delete files from the folder /Android/data/ manually, this can disrupt applications. Use their internal settings to clean the messenger cache (e.g., Settings). → Warehouse → Clear the cache on WhatsApp).
6 How to transfer photos from Xiaomi to PC or other device
If you need to free up space on your phone or make a backup, here are all the ways to transfer a photo:

For mass transfer, we recommend using USB 3.0 (blue connector) - this will speed up the process by 5-10 times compared to USB 2.0.
- Try another cable (original from Xiaomi is preferred).
- Update ADB drivers via Mi PC Suite.

7. Recover deleted photos on Xiaomi
If you accidentally delete a photo, you have 30 days to restore it (provided it hasn't been permanently deleted).
- Recycle Bin in Gallery: Open Gallery → Albums → Cart. Select photo → Click Restore.
- Mi Cloud: Go to i.mi.com → Recycle Bin. Restore files within 30 days of deletion.
Recovery programmes:
- Use DiskDigger, Recuva or EaseUS MobiSaver (requires root for deep scanning).
- Connect your phone to your PC and scan your internal memory.
On some firmware (e.g. MIUI 14 for Xiaomi 13), this option may be hidden, in which case use the file manager to manually transfer photos.
