Every user of Xiaomi, Redmi or Poco smartphones has at least once experienced the need to quickly save a screen image. Whether it's messaging, a map screenshot or important information from a browser, these files are instantly created by the system. However, after hundreds of images taken, finding the right one becomes more difficult, especially if you don't know the exact path to the directory.
In Android, which runs the MIUI or HyperOS shell, folder structure is hierarchically structured, and understanding where files are physically located allows you not only to quickly find them, but also to effectively clean the device’s memory of digital debris. In this article, we will look at all possible locations in detail.
Many users mistakenly believe that screenshots are lost or hidden in hidden system partitions. In fact, the file path is standard and accessible to anyone with access to a gallery or file manager, and we'll look at both navigation and the nuances of working with cloud services.
The Standard Path in the Gallery and System Albums
The most obvious and frequently used way to view screenshots taken is through the built-in Gallery app, which is where all images created by volume buttons or key combinations fall by default, and the system automatically sorts media files by type, creating separate albums for the user's convenience.
To find the image you want, open the app and go to the Albums tab, and here you'll see a folder called Screenshots (or Screenshots in the English version of the firmware), and inside the files are sorted by date of creation, the most recent ones are on top, which allows you to quickly find what you did a few minutes ago.
However, if you have sync enabled with Xiaomi Cloud or Google Photos, the structure may change a little, in which case images may be duplicated in cloud folders. It is important to understand that deleting a file from the main album Screenshots on the device usually removes it from the cloud, if the sync is active.
💡
Use the Favorites feature in the gallery for important screenshots so you don’t search for them every time in a shared pile of files.
It's worth noting that new versions of the HyperOS shell have made sorting algorithms smarter, and the system can automatically recognize text in a screenshot and suggest it in search, even if the file is named in a standard way, which greatly speeds up navigation across thousands of stored images.
- 📸 Open the Gallery app on the home screen.
- 📂 Go to the "Albums" tab in the lower menu.
- 🔍 Find the Screenshots or Screenshots folder».
- 📅 The default sorting goes from new to old.
Physical path in the file manager
For those who prefer to work with the file system directly or want to copy files to a computer, you need to know the exact address of the directory. Unlike iOS, the Android file system is open and accessed through the Explorer or Files application.
The absolute path to the screenshot folder is standard in most cases. You need to go to the root directory of internal memory, then find the DCIM or Pictures folder, but Xiaomi most often uses a separate root folder. Exact path: Internal memory → MIUI → gallery → cloudcache (for cache) or most often Internal memory → Pictures → Screenshots.
⚠️ Note: When connecting the phone to the computer USB-The folder structure can be displayed differently. Look for the Pictures folder at the root of the internal drive, which usually contains the Screenshots directory.
If you use third-party file managers like Total Commander or FX File Explorer, the navigation will be similar, and the main advantage of direct file access is the ability to massively rename, change extensions, or move to secure folders.
In some cases, especially after a firmware update, the path may change to Internal Storage → DCIM → Screenshots. This is the standard Android behavior that Xiaomi sometimes adopts in new versions of the OS. If there are no files in one folder, check adjacent directories.

Differences in MIUI and HyperOS shells
With the transition of many devices to the new HyperOS operating system based on Android 14, there have been changes in the logic of working with media files, users of older versions of MIUI 12, 13 and 14 may notice differences in how the system organizes and displays screenshots.
MIUI has traditionally been dominated by the MIUI/Gallery folder for some system thumbnails, but the main screenshots were in Pictures. In HyperOS, Google has tightened control over file structure, requiring manufacturers to comply with Scoped Storage standards, which means that applications are now more difficult to access all files at once without user permission.
For the smartphone owner, this means that when you try to open a screenshot through a third-party app (for example, send it via a messenger), the system can request additional permission to access media files. This is a security measure, but it can confuse an inexperienced user.
| Characteristics | MIUI (12-14) | HyperOS (1.0+) |
|---|---|---|
| Main folder. | Internal/Pictures/Screenshots | Internal/Pictures/Screenshots |
| Access to applications | Partially unrestricted | Strict (Scoped Storage) |
| Editorial | ||
| Search | Metadata. | By OCR (text in the photo) |
The built-in image editor has also changed, and while the MIUI editor opened immediately after a screenshot was created, it now offers standard Android tools or Google Photos editor, which affects where edited versions are saved — they can be created as copies in the same folder.
Why are the old screenshots missing?
Search through Google Files and Explorer
When manually wandering through folders takes too long, built-in search tools come to the rescue. Xiaomi smartphones have a powerful file manager that can index the contents of memory.
Open the Explorer app (yellow folder icon) at the top of the screen, there's usually a search bar. Type in the word "Screenshot" or "Screenshot." The system will instantly filter out all files with that name or type, no matter how deep they are, which is especially useful if you've previously manually moved files.
Alternatively, Files by Google, which is often installed by default or available in the Play Market, has a Review tab, where files are automatically categorized as Images, Documents, Audio. The Images category often has a separate section for screenshots.
- 🔎 Launch the Explorer or Files app».
- ⌨️ Enter in the search for Screenshot».
- 📁 Use filters by date or size.
- 🗑️ Massively allocate unnecessary files to delete.
The reason why search engines are effective is because they find files that have even rebranded extensions or damaged thumbnails, and if the gallery doesn't display the image because of an indexing error, the file manager will still show the file itself.
Problems with displaying and disappearing files
Sometimes users are faced with a situation where the screenshot seems to be taken (the sound of the shutter sounds), but the gallery does not have it. This is a common problem, which is often solved by checking free memory. If the disk space is out, the file may not be written completely.
Another common cause is an Android media scanner that crashes, which is a service that checks memory in the background for new photos and videos to add to the gallery, and if it's stuck, new screenshots won't appear on the album until the phone reboots.
⚠️ Warning: Don’t use “memory cleaners” of dubious origin. They can delete the system file.nomedia, which tells the system to ignore the folder, or, conversely, create it where it is not needed, hiding your photos.
Also check your privacy settings. Xiaomi has a Hidden Album feature. If you accidentally swipe down the gallery and drag screenshots there, they will disappear from public access. To return, you need to go to the gallery settings and select "Show Hidden Albums".
If screenshots are saved in messengers (such as WhatsApp or Telegram), they can lie in separate folders inside Android/media or MIUI/Gallery/cloudcache, and not appear in the main album “Screenshots”, but in the album of a particular application.
Cleaning and optimizing storage
Screenshots are digital garbage that accumulate, thousands of images of interfaces, correspondence and code can take up gigabytes of valuable space, and cleaning this folder regularly is a must-have for keeping a smartphone running.
Before you delete everything, use the size sorting function. Often, screenshots of long pages (scrollable screenshots) weigh significantly more than normal ones. Deleting them will free up the most space. In the gallery, select Albums → Screenshots → menu (three dots) → Clear.
To automate the process, you can configure the rules in Xiaomi's Security app, and there's a Cleanup feature that finds similar images and old screenshots, but manual control is still more reliable so you don't delete important information.
💡
Regularly cleaning the Screenshots folder can free up to 10-15% of the space on the internal drive, which is critical for versions with 64 GB of memory.
Remember to check the Recycle Bin folder in the gallery after cleaning. Deleted files are stored there for another 30 days, continuing to take up space, although formally they have already been removed from the system.
