Accidentally removing an important image or a series of photos is a situation familiar to every owner of a Xiaomi smartphone running a MIUI shell or a new HyperOS. At this point, the user is panicked, and the first question is: βWhere did my data go?β The answer to it is not as simple as it seems at first glance, since the modern Android file system is more complex than a simple folder on a computer.
First of all, you need to understand that when you press the Delete button, the file doesn't physically disappear from the drive instantly. The operating system only marks the place where it was located as free to write new information. That's why there's a high probability of returning the picture if you don't write new data on top of it. Where exactly to look for lost frames depends on how you deleted them and what synchronization settings were active on your device.
In this article, we will take a closer look at all the possible locations where your images may be hidden. We will look at the standard gallery basket, the cloud services Xiaomi Cloud and Google Photos, as well as system folders that require attention. Understanding the structure of the Xiaomi file system will help you not only find remote, but also properly organize the storage of media files in the future.
The basket in the annex Gallery
The most obvious and first place to look when you lose photos is the built-in Recycle Bin feature in the standard Gallery app, and since earlier versions of MIUI, developers have implemented a security mechanism that saves files deleted by the user for 30 days, a buffer zone designed to protect against random actions.
You can find this folder by opening the Gallery app and going to the Album tab. Scroll down and you'll see Deleted or Recently Deleted, where files are stored in their original quality and take up space on your device.
β οΈ Note: if you manually deleted a photo from the βRecently Deletedβ folder or the 30-day period has expired, the file is permanently erased from the visible part of the file system.
The newer versions of the HyperOS shell have kept the shopping cart logic the same, but the interface could have changed. If you can't see the folder right away, try tapping three dots in the corner of the screen or swiping down to call the menu. The shopping cart's algorithm is the same for most models, whether it's a budget Redmi Note or a flagship Xiaomi 14.

Turn on the display of hidden albums in the Gallery settings if the Deleted folder is not visible immediately - sometimes it hides in the Other Albums submenu.
Xiaomi Cloud Storage and Synchronization
The second critical search point is the manufacturer's cloud service, and many users neglect to set up a Mi Account, and it's a waste of time. If you've enabled gallery sync on your device, photos deleted from your phone can be saved to the cloud. It works as an independent backup that doesn't always clear at the same time as local memory.
To check, you need to go to your smartphone Settings, select your Mi Account and click on Xiaomi Cloud. Next, select the Gallery. If the sync status was active, you will see all your pictures there. Moreover, in the web version of the service at i.mi.com, there is also a separate cloud basket, where files deleted even after synchronization fall.
- π The storage period in the cloud basket is up to 30 days for free accounts.
- βοΈ Premium subscribers can store deleted files in the Recycle Bin for up to 60 days.
- π Recovery from the cloud occurs instantly with an internet connection.
There's a caveat: if you delete a photo on your phone and sync is enabled, the file can also be deleted from the cloud when you connect to the network. However, if the phone was offline at the time of deletion, the copy will remain on the server. The web interface of the cloud often contains more data than the application on the smartphone, so checking through the computer's browser is a must.
Google Photos as a backup service
And remember the second layer of protection, the Google ecosystem, all Xiaomi certified smartphones have Google Photos pre-installed, which often prompts you to turn on autoboot by default, and even if you don't actively use the app, the backup function could work in the background.
Verification is done via the Google Photos app. Click on the profile avatar in the upper right corner and select Photo Settings -> Recycle Bin. Google's algorithm differs from MIUI: here deleted photos are stored for 60 days if they were uploaded to the cloud, and 30 days if they are local copies. This gives an additional window of opportunity to save data.
β οΈ Attention: Freeing up space in the Google Photos app ("Free space") removes local copies from the device, leaving them only in the cloud.
Interestingly, Google Photos uses smart recognition. Even if a file is corrupted when deleted, algorithms can save its thumbnail or metadata. Recovery from Google is often a more reliable way, because the company's servers are highly fault-tolerant. Check also the Archive section of the app - sometimes photos get there instead of deleting.
Google's Hidden Folders
System folders and file manager
If automated services didn't work, you'll have to move to manual search. The Android file system on which MIUI is based has a strict hierarchy. The standard path to photos is DCIM/Camera. But where are the deleted ones stored? In fact, they can remain as "junk" in the app cache or in temporary directories until they are overwritten.
Using the built-in Explorer (File Manager), you can try to find traces. Go to the Internal Shared Drive. Notice the folders.thumbnails (hidden thumbnail folder) or MIUI/Gallery/cloud/cache. There may be reduced copies of images. Although this is not a complete photo, sometimes even a preview is enough to read important information.
To access hidden system folders, you may need to enable the display of hidden files. In the Explorer menu, click on three bars and select Settings, then activate the Show Hidden Files switch. The system caches of messenger applications (WhatsApp, Telegram) are also a place where photos can be duplicated automatically.
- π The Way to WhatsApp Cache: Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Images.
- π The path to Telegram's cache: Android/data/org.telegram.messenger/files.
- π Look for files with the.jpg or.png extension by sorting them by date of change.
It is worth noting that in modern versions of Android (11, 12, 13, 14) file-access Android/data Xiaomiβs standard Explorer may not show the contents of these folders in full, which requires a PC connection or the use of special file managers with extended rights.

Recovery through computer and special software
When embedded tools are exhausted, heavy artillery, the PC software, comes into play, and the principle of their operation is to scan deep memory sectors, because data is physically left in place when deleted, programs like Dr.Fone, DiskDigger (Android version) or Recuva (for memory cards) can find βsimmeredβ files.
For the effective operation of such programs on the Xiaomi smartphone, it is often required to activate the debugging mode via USB. This is done through the Settings menu -> About the phone (quickly press the MIUI version 7 times) -> Advanced settings -> For developers -> Debugging over USB. Without this step, the computer will not get deep access to the file system.
| Programme | Type of access | Efficiency | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| DiskDigger (App) | No Root/With Root | Medium (cache) | Low. |
| Dr.Fone (PC) | USB Debugging | Tall. | Medium |
| Recuva (PC) | Only an SD card. | High (for SD) | Low. |
| PhotoRec (PC) | Full access | Very high. | Tall. |
It's important to understand the risks. Deep scanning puts a strain on memory. The more new data you write to your phone after you delete the photo, the less likely you are to recover it, so it's recommended that you put your phone on airplane mode immediately after you find it missing and not take any more pictures.
β οΈ Note: using data recovery software with Root rights may result in loss of warranty or disruption of banking applications.

The best chance of returning a photo without loss of quality is to use backups (Cloud/Google) rather than a memory scan.
Preventing Data Loss in the Future
The best way to combat photo loss is to back up photos in a timely manner. Xiaomi owners should set up automatic sync. It won't take long, but it will save nerves at a critical moment. You can use a combination of services: Xiaomi Cloud for system albums and Google Photos for everything else.
It is also recommended to make regular local copies to your computer or external hard drive. Connect your smartphone via a USB cable once a week and copy the DCIM folder. This will take a couple of minutes, but will create a physical copy of your memories, independent of Internet services and account locks.
- π Set up a bootup in Wi-Fi so you donβt waste mobile traffic.
- πΎ Periodically clean the cloud by transferring old archives to the cloud. HDD.
- π Use the Protected Folder in the Gallery for critical photos.
Remember, SD cards are also a vulnerability. They fail more often than a phone's internal memory. If you store photos on a map, make sure to duplicate them. Digital hygiene is a habit that takes years to develop but starts to benefit immediately.
