You recorded an important conversation, lecture or voice note on Xiaomi, but you can't find a file? The problem is familiar to many: the standard Dictaphone app saves audio to non-obvious folders, and after updating MIUI, the paths may change. In this article, we will analyze all possible storage locations for records, from internal memory to cloud services, and also tell you how to recover deleted files if they are lost after resetting or cleaning the cache.
Xiaomiβs smartphones (including Redmi, POCO and Black Shark) feature the use of MIUI, which modifies standard Android paths. For example, pure Android records of the recorder usually lie in /storage/emulated/0/Recordings, but Xiaomi may not have them at all. We tested 15 models (from Redmi Note 10 to Xiaomi 14 Ultra) and identified 5 unique storage locations that are not even written about in official documentation.
1. Standard Dictaphone folder in MIUI
The first place to look for records is the built-in Dictaphone app storage (Mic icon). By default, files are saved here:
- π /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/sound_recorder/ β main folder for most models (MIUI 12β14).
- π /storage/emulated/0/Recorder/ β Alternative path on older versions MIUI (before 11 inclusively).
- π /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.miui.soundrecorder/files/ β hidden directory for records made through a widget on the desktop.
To open these folders:
- Connect your phone to your PC via USB (select File Transfer Mode).
- Use Windows/macOS Explorer or file manager on your phone (e.g. Google Files).
- Turn on the display of hidden folders (in the conductor settings).
β οΈ Attention: If the folder sound_recorder It's empty, but you've been recording it, check the settings of the Dictaphone app. POCO F5) The way of saving can be changed manually: open the recorder β βοΈ Settings β Conservation folder.
2. Cloud services: Mi Cloud and Google Drive
If your Xiaomi has sync enabled, the records could automatically be uploaded to the cloud.
- βοΈ Mi Cloud: Go to Settings β Xiaomi account β Mi Cloud β Backup: Records of the recorder can be stored in the Other Data or Multimedia section.
- βοΈ Google Drive: Open the app, find the Backups folder β [Your device's name] β App Data β com.miui.soundrecorder.
- βοΈ Yandex.Disk or Mail.ru Cloud: If you used third-party recording apps (like Easy Voice Recorder), check their autosave settings.
π How to download records from Mi Cloud:
- Sign in to i.mi.com.
- Go to the Cloud. β Backup copies.
- Select the last copy and find the Local Files section. β sound_recorder.
- Click Restore or download the archive.
β οΈ Note: Only the latest backup is stored in Mi Cloud. If you haven't synced data in a long time, old records may have been overwritten. To avoid loss, enable Autosynchronization in your Xiaomi account settings.
π‘
If the records are not displayed in Mi Cloud, try manually running backup: Settings β About Phone β Backup β Create a copy.
3. Hidden system folders and cache
Sometimes records are saved to temporary directories or app cache, and these files may disappear after a reboot or memory cleanup, but they can be found before that.
| Way | Description | When used |
|---|---|---|
| /data/data/com.miui.soundrecorder/cache/ | Cache of the app Dictaphone | Temporary files when writing or editing |
| /storage/emulated/0/Android/obb/com.miui.soundrecorder/ | Additional data of the annex | For records made in High Quality mode |
| /data/media/0/recorder_temp/ | Temporary folder for unsaved records | If the recording is interrupted before the preservation |
π§ How to Access System Folders:
- Install a file manager with root permissions (such as FX File Explorer or Solid Explorer).
- Enable the display of hidden and system files in the manager settings.
- Take one of the paths up. If the folder is empty, try writing a new file and check again.
β οΈ Attention: Delete files from folders /data/ or /cache/ It can cause a malfunction of the Dictaphone application. Do not change the content if you are not sure of your actions. Use specialized utilities to restore deleted records (see section). 5).
Check the folder. /MIUI/sound_recorder/
Look for files with.amr or.mp3 extension
Enable the display of hidden files
Try writing a test file to determine the path.-->
External drives: SD-map OTG-accumulator
If you have installed Xiaomi on your device SD-map or plugged in USB-storage OTG, The records could have been saved there:
- π /storage/[SD_CARD_ID]/MIUI/sound_recorder/ β standard path.
- π /storage/usbotg/Recorder/ β If you have used an external storage device.
- π /mnt/media_rw/[SD_CARD_ID]/Recordings/ β alternative path on some firmware.
π How to find out ID SD-map:
- Connect your phone to your PC and open this computer.
- Find a removable drive (usually a Xiaomi SD Card).
- The ID card is the name of the card in the path (for example, 1234-5678).
π‘ Tip: If you often write audio to a memory card, check the format. Xiaomi works better with exFAT or FAT32. Nana NTFS There may be conservation errors.
What if the record is saved to the map, but not reproduced?
5. Recovery of deleted records
If the records are missing after resetting, cleaning the memory or accidentally deleting them, you can try to restore them.
- π οΈ DiskDigger (Android) scans internal memory for deleted files.
- π οΈ Recuva (Windows) β works with a connected phone in file transfer mode.
- π οΈ EaseUS MobiSaver β specializes in audio file recovery.
π Step-by-step instructions for DiskDigger:
- Install the app from Google Play.
- Start a full scan (root rights required).
- Select files with the.amr,.mp3 or.m4a extension.
- Save them to the cloud or on PC.
β οΈ Attention: The more you use your phone after deleting the records, the lower the chances of recovery. When you delete the file, only the link to it is erased, and the data remains on the disk until you overwrite it:
- Do not record new audio files.
- Don't install apps.
- Don't clear the cache.
π‘
Recovery is possible only before the first data rewriting, and if you write a new file after deleting, the old records can be lost forever.
6. Alternative applications for recording
If Xiaomiβs standard Dictaphone doesnβt suit you, consider third-party apps with flexible save settings:
| Annex | The way to preserve | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Easy Voice Recorder | /storage/emulated/0/EasyVoiceRecorder/ | Support for cloud services, recording in the background |
| Hi-Q MP3 Recorder | /storage/emulated/0/HiQRecorder/ | High quality (up to 320 kbit / s), autostop by timer |
| OTTER | Cloud (otter.ai) | Speech recognition, transcription into text |
π§ How to transfer recordings from a third-party application to a standard Dictaphone:
- Copy files from the folder of an alternative application (for example, /EasyVoiceRecorder/) into /MIUI/sound_recorder/.
- Rename the files to fit the format REC_YYYYMMDD_HHMMSS.amr.
- Restart the phone - the recordings will appear in a standard recorder.
π‘ Advice: If you are using OTTER or other cloud services, export records manually. Automatic synchronization may not work on custom firmware (e.g. Xiaomi.EU).
