Have you accidentally hidden important photos in a hidden album on your Xiaomi Redmi Note and now you can't find them? Or do you suspect that someone in your household used this feature to hide files from your eyes? Don't worry, in this article we'll look at all possible storage locations for hidden media in MIUI firmware, including system folders, secure albums and cloud storage.
Hidden albums on Xiaomi smartphones work differently depending on the MIUI version and device model. For example, on the Redmi Note 10 Pro with MIUI 13, the path to the.nomedia system folder may be different from what you will see on the Redmi Note 12 with MIUI 15. We took these nuances into account and prepared universal instructions that will be suitable for most Redmi Note devices (from Note 8 to Note 13).
Important: Some methods require a superuser or a computer connection, and if you're a beginner, start with the simplest methods (sections 2 and 3), and only move on to the hard ones when necessary.
1. Standard Hidden Album at MIUI Gallery
The most obvious way to hide files on the Xiaomi Redmi Note is to use the built-in Secure Albums feature in the standard Gallery app, which requires no additional software and works on all versions of MIUI (11 to 15).
To find the files hidden here:
- Open the Gallery app (icon with multi-colored squares).
- Slip along the three horizontal lines in the lower right corner (album menu).
- Scroll down and find the Protected Albums section (may be called Hidden Albums or Private Safe in English firmware).
- The system will request a password, fingerprint, or pattern lock (the same as it would to unlock the screen).
If you haven’t set a password before, try the standard combinations:
- 🔢 1234, 0000 or 1111 – often used by default.
- 📱 pattern lock in the form of the letter "Z" or "N" (standard templates).
- 👤 Your Mi Account password (sometimes working).
⚠️ Warning: If you forget the password for a protected album, you can only reset it without losing data through a full hard reset. This will delete all files on your device! MIUI Unlock Tool (requires PC and unlocked bootloader).
2.The.nomedia system folder: where to look and how to open
All media files on the Xiaomi Redmi Note are stored by default in the DCIM or Pictures folder. However, if you have hidden files manually or through third-party apps (such as GalleryVault or Hide It Pro), they may have ended up in a folder with the.nomedia attribute.
To find them:
- Connect your phone to your computer through USB-cable (file transfer mode or MTP).
- Open Windows Explorer (or Finder on Mac) and go to the root directory of internal memory.
- Enable the display of hidden files: 🪟 On Windows: View → Hidden elements. 🍎 On Mac: Command + Shift +. (point).
- 📁.nomedia (maybe in the DCIM, Pictures or the root of memory).
- 📁 .hide, .secret, .private.
- 📁 MIUI/Hidden (firmware).
If files are not in the cloud web version, try to restore them through a backup:
- 📱 Go to Settings. → The phone. → Backup and reset → Local backups.
- 🔍 Find the last copy marked "Gallery" and restore it.
- ⚠️ Note that the recovery will rewrite the current files on the device!

If you don’t remember the password from MI Cloud, you can reset it via account.xiaomi.com (forgot your password?) and this will require access to your linked email or phone number.
4. Third-party applications for hiding files
In addition to standard MIUI tools, Redmi Note often installs third-party applications to hide files.
- 🔒 GalleryVault – Creates a password-protected album with a simulated error when trying to open.
- 🗃️ Hide It Pro (Audio Manager) – disguised as an audio player but hides photos and videos.
- 📂 AppLock – blocks access to the gallery and individual folders.
- 🌐 KeepSafe – Cloud and Local Storage with PIN-code.
If the files were in the MIUI Protected Album, they will remain in memory until overwritten after deletion (use Secure Delete in Mi File Explorer).
