Have you taken a picture through the standard Camera app on Xiaomi, but can't find it in the gallery? Or accidentally activated the Personal Album mode and now the photos are gone from public access? This problem is familiar to many owners of devices with MIUI firmware - Xiaomi's branded shell offers a convenient but not always obvious system for storing media files.
Unlike pure Android, where all photos are stored in the DCIM/Camera folder, in MIUI, some of the images can automatically be taken to the hidden Personal section, especially when using privacy protection or sync with Mi Cloud, in this article we will analyze all possible places where your personal album can be hidden, from standard folders to system settings.
Important: If you've recently updated your firmware or reset your settings, the layout of your albums may have changed, and we've taken into account the features of the latest MIUI 14/15 and models from the Redmi Note 12 to the Xiaomi 14 Ultra.
1.Standard Place: Gallery app and Personal tab
The most obvious way to check the built-in Gallery app is to check the multi-colored square icon, which has been in the latest versions of MIUI, and has a separate tab for personal albums, but it's easy to skip.
- Open the Gallery app.
- In the bottom menu, tap the icon "Albums"** (or ⋮ → Albums if you have an old version).
If there is no tab, try:
- 🔍 Swipe left in the main gallery menu - sometimes the album is hidden behind a gesture.
- 🔒 Check if the password is set: when you first open the "Personal" system may request PIN print.
- 📱 Make sure you are not in guest mode (check in Settings) → Accounts. → Guest mode).
On some models (such as the POCO F5 or Redmi K60), the Personal tab may be called Hidden Albums or Secure Files. If you can't see it at all, move on to the next section - maybe the album is hidden deeper.

If you don’t remember the password from your personal album, try resetting it through Settings. → Passwords and security → Protection of confidentiality → Reset the password. You'll need to enter. PIN-lock-screen.
2. the system folder "Private" in the Explorer
If the photos aren't displayed in the gallery but you're sure they're saved, check the system folders through Explorer (or any file manager, such as Mi File Manager or Solid Explorer). MIUI stored on the next path:
/storage/emulated/0/MIUI/Private/

/storage/emulated/0/Pictures/Private/How to get there:
- Open the Explorer (Icon with folder).
Please note:
- 📁 Private folder can be hidden – without the option you will not see it.
- 🔐 Some files inside have the.nomedia extension, meaning they are deliberately excluded from the gallery's scanning.
- 📱 On devices with MIUI 14+ path may differ: /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.miui.gallery/private/.
What to do if the Private folder is empty?
Important: Do not delete files with the.nomedia extension in the Private folder, which will lead to duplication of photos in the gallery and can disrupt the work of albums.
3.Mi Cloud Cloud Storage: Where to Look for Hidden Photos
If you are logged in to your Mi Account and sync is enabled, your personal albums could automatically be downloaded to Mi Cloud.
- Open the Settings. → Accounts. → Mi Account.
- Slip on Mi Cloud (or the Cloud).
- Choose Gallery or Photo.
- Check the "Personal" tab** or the Private tab.
Features of cloud storage:
- 🌐 Photos in Mi Cloud may not be displayed immediately - wait for the synchronization to be completed (cloud icon in the status bar).
- 🔄 If you turned off sync, the albums could only remain in local storage.
- 📲 On some models (e.g. Xiaomi) 13T) Cloud Photos are only available via i.mi.com.
If you have a photo in the cloud but not on your phone:
⚠️ Warning: Check if the storage limit in Mi Cloud is exceeded. When overflowing, new photos do not sync. Delete unnecessary files or expand the tariff (free 5 GB is available).
4. Hidden albums in third-party applications
If you used third-party galleries or file-hiding utilities, personal photos could end up there. Popular apps that create their own "secret" albums:

How to check:
- In the search, enter the name of the program (for example, Gallery Vault).
If you don’t remember which app you used, check:
- 📁 Folders on. SD-Map: Some utilities create hidden directories like.vault or.secure.
5. Restoring access to a personal album after a reset or update
If you reset your phone to factory settings or upgraded your MIUI to a new version, you may lose access to your personal albums.
Check if you are logged in to the same Mi Account as before the reset

Scenario 1: Album Disappears After MIUI Update
In newer versions of firmware, the media storage structure may change.
- Update the Gallery and Mi Cloud through the Mi App Store.
Scenario 2: Reset settings without backup
If you haven't done a backup, the chances of recovering a photo depend on whether they were synced to Mi Cloud or Google Photos.
- 📧 Emails – You may have sent photos to yourself or friends.
- 💬 Messengers (Telegram, WhatsApp) – sometimes photos are saved in chat rooms.
- 🖥️ Computer - connect the phone to USB And check the folders through the PC.
⚠️ Note: If you have used the Privacy Protection function in MIUI And if you don't remember the password, you can't restore access to your albums without resetting your phone, and that's only a backup in the cloud or on your PC.
6. Alternative methods: search by tags and backups
If the standard methods don’t work, try the non-trivial approaches:
Search by tags and dates
In MIUI, photos are automatically tagged (e.g. #portrait, #night) to find lost photos:
- Open the Gallery and tap on the magnifying glass icon (search).
- Enter a keyword (e.g., selfie, document, or date in 2026-05 format).
- Check the results – sometimes photos are in unexpected albums (for example, Screenshots or Collages).
Verification of backup copies
If you’ve ever taken a backup, the photos could be saved to:
- 📱 Local backups: Settings → The phone. → Backup and reset → Local backups.
- 🖥️ PC Copies: Connect your phone to your computer and check folders through Windows Explorer or Mac Finder.
- ☁️ Cloud Services: Other than Mi Cloud, check Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive.
Using ADB to access system folders
For advanced users: if the photos are definitely on the device, but not displayed, you can try to find them through ADB (Android Debug Bridge).
- Turn on Developer Mode: Settings → About Phone → MIUI version (tap 7 times).
- Activate USB Debugging in Settings → Additional → For developers.
- Connect your phone to your PC and execute the command: adb shell ls /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/Private/
⚠️ Attention: Use ADB The wrong commands can damage system files. If you're not sure, contact Xiaomi Service Center.

If you don't find any photos in any of these places, make sure they're accidentally deleted. In MIUI, deleted files are stored in the gallery basket for 30 days: open the Gallery → Recycle Bin and recover the images you want.
