Many Android users, especially Xiaomi and Redmi smartphone owners, often face the need to return a accidentally deleted file. Unlike desktop operating systems such as Windows or macOS, mobile Android does not have a single, visible desktop Recycle Bin where all remote objects fall by default. This often causes panic: it seems that files are lost forever. However, this is not quite true if you know where to look.
MIUI and its newer version of HyperOS have their own features of storing deleted data. Instead of sharing a single folder for all garbage, the system uses distributed storage: photos are in one place, documents are in another, and system files can be inaccessible without root rights.
In this article, we’ll take a look at exactly where the cart is hiding in your device, how to extend the shelf life of remote objects, and what to do if standard methods don’t work. You’ll learn about the hidden features of a gallery, file manager, and cloud services that can save your data.
The principle of storage of remote data in MIUI
The MIUI shell is based on a philosophy of saving space and security, where when you delete a file, the system doesn't physically erase it from the drive instantly, instead it simply labels the memory area where the file was stored as "free to write," and the object moves it to a hidden system partition or changes its index in the database, and until new data is written to that place, the file can theoretically be restored.
But unlike Windows, where the basket is a separate folder on the disk, Android has this mechanism implemented through application databases, which means that each program (Gallery, Explorer, Recorder) has its own remote buffer. There is no single place where everything remote from the entire smartphone flows, which is why finding the basket is often difficult for an untrained user.
⚠️ Note: Deleted files in the system buffer take up space on the drive until they expire or you forcibly clear the buffer. After the expiration of the term (usually 30 days), the system marks the space as available for overwriting.
It's important to understand the difference between deleting through different interfaces. If you delete a photo through a standard gallery, it will end up in its internal shopping cart. If you use a third-party file manager with permissions, the file could be deleted bypassing the security buffer, making it extremely difficult to recover without special software.
The basket in the annex Gallery
The most common place users search for lost photos and videos is the standard Gallery app. On Xiaomi and Redmi smartphones, it has a built-in clipboard that stores deleted media files for a certain period, and you can find it by following the simple logic of navigating the app menu.
To access remote images, you need to open the app and go to the Albums tab. At the bottom of the album list, often after the folders with the app names (e.g. WhatsApp, Instagram), there is the Deleted System folder. In some versions of MIUI, it may be called Recently Deleted, and that's where your files are stored before being permanently erased.
- 📸 Open the Gallery app and go to the bottom tab of Albums».
- 📂 Scroll down to the "Other Albums" or "Systems" section».
- 🗑️ Find a folder called “Removed” or “Recently Deleted».
- ⏳ Inside, you’ll see files sorted by deletion date, countdown days.
The file life in this folder is usually 30 days, and then it is deleted automatically, but the user can manually clean the folder earlier or, conversely, restore the file by clicking on it and selecting the appropriate button, which is the only regular way to return the photo without using a computer.
💡
If you can't see the Remote folder, check the Gallery settings, and sometimes access is hidden or disabled in privacy settings, especially if Guest or Second Space mode is enabled.
Search for deleted files in the Explorer
Situation with documents, archives, APK-The standard file manager from Xiaomi also has a shopping cart function, but it does not work for all file types and is not always enabled by default. The mechanism here is tied to specific user actions within the application.
With new versions of the HyperOS shell and recent MIUI updates, the Explorer functionality has been expanded, so that when you delete a file through the built-in manager, the system may suggest moving it to the local basket, but if you delete files through third-party applications (such as Total Commander or direct access from a PC), they may not be in the standard Explorer Recycle Bin.
To check for deleted documents:
- Launch the Explorer app (folder icon).
- Click on the “three stripes” menu in the top corner or go to the “Category” tab.
- Look for the item “Recently Deleted” or “Recently Deleted” in the category list.
It is worth noting that the Recycle Bin can be limited in size, and the system can automatically clean old files if the device is running out of space, even if the 30-day period has not expired, so that the smartphone does not stop functioning due to overflowing memory with garbage.

The Role of Mi Cloud Service
The company’s cloud service, Mi Cloud, deserves special attention. If your Redmi smartphone has been synchronized, your deleted files can be stored there, regardless of the state of the phone’s internal memory, which often becomes a salvation when local copies are already erased.
There is a separate section for remote objects in the cloud, and even if you cleared the shopping cart on the phone itself, the files can stay in the cloud for up to 60 days (for photos) or longer, depending on the tariff and type of data, and access to this section is possible through both the smartphone settings and the web interface.
| Type of data | Storage period in the cloud | Limit of volume | Auto-recovery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photos and videos | 60 days | Depends on the tariff. | Yes. |
| Contacts | Indefinite (up to 30 days after removal) | Up to 50,000. | Yes. |
| Notes | 30 days | Depends on the tariff. | Yes. |
| Files (Drive) | 30 days | Depends on the tariff. | No. |
To check, go to Settings → Mi Account → Mi Cloud. There you will find sync management and access to the web version of the cloud. The web interface often provides more flexible tools for working with deleted files, allowing you to recover entire albums at once.
What to do if the Mi Cloud is over?
Google Photos as an Alternative Cart
And remember, every Android smartphone has Google services pre-installed. Google Photos often runs in parallel with Xiaomi's gallery and has its own, very robust shopping cart, and many users don't even know that their photos are duplicated there.
Google Photos has the advantage of powerful algorithms and long shelf life: Deleted photos and videos are stored in the service basket for 60 days if Autonomous Backup or Sync with a Google account is enabled, which is often more reliable than local MIUI storage.
You can find this shopping cart along the way: open the Google Photos app, click on the Library tab (bottom right), then select Recycle Bin. Here you will find everything that was removed from the phone gallery if the application had access to changes to the file system. The interface here is more informative: you see how many days are left before the final deletion of the file.
Importantly, Google Photos can take up space in the Google One cloud. If you run out of 15GB, new photos will no longer sync, but those already uploaded to the cart will stay there until the deadline, making the service a great addition to Xiaomi’s standard tools.
💡
Google Photos often stores deleted photos longer and more reliably than standard Xiaomi Gallery, especially if sync with your Google account is enabled.
Specialized recovery applications
If files were deleted bypassing standard mechanisms (e.g., adb, memory card formatting, or system failure), the built-in bin will be empty, and specialized data recovery applications come to the rescue, scanning memory for “orphaned” file structures.
One of the most effective tools is the DiskDigger app, which works in two modes: surface scanning (without root rights) and deep scanning (requires superuser rights), in the first case, the application will find cached thumbnails of photos, in the second – will try to restore the originals.
Other popular solutions include:
- 🛠️ Recuva (via PC connection) – a classic for data recovery.
- 📱 Dr.Fone – a powerful combine for working with Android.
- 🔍 Undeleter – specializes in file recovery without a computer.
Using such programs requires caution, installing a recovery application directly on the phone from which you want to save data can cause the application itself to overwrite the deleted files, the ideal option is to remove the memory card (if any) and connect it to the computer through a card reader for scanning.
⚠️ Note: When using root-based data recovery applications, efficiency may be low. Full-fledged memory sector scanning requires superuser rights, which can result in loss of warranty.
