Have you made an important audio recording on a Xiaomi recorder but can't find it? Or have you accidentally deleted a file and want to recover it? In this article, we'll look at where the recorder's recordings are stored on Redmi, POCO and other models of the brand, both in internal memory and in cloud services. Let's look at all possible access paths, including hidden folders and backups.
The problem with finding audio files arises from the features of the MIUI file system: a standard voice recorder saves entries not in the root folder, but in secure directories that are not displayed in most file managers. In addition, storage settings may differ depending on the firmware version (from MIUI 12 to MIUI 15) and the device model. We will analyze each option in detail so that you can quickly find your entries - even if they have been deleted or moved.
Important: If you use third-party recording apps (like ASR Recorder or Easy Voice Recorder), the path to the files will be different. This article is only about the standard Xiaomi voice recorder, which is preinstalled in the firmware.
Standard location of recordings of the Xiaomi voice recorder
By default, audio files created by the built-in voice recorder are stored in the phoneโs internal memory along the following path:
/storage/emulated/0/MIUI/sound_recorder/Alternatively, for some models:
/storage/emulated/0/Recordings/These folders can be hidden from the user, so they are not visible in the standard MIUI file manager.
- ๐ Enable the display of hidden files in the file manager settings (for example, in Files by Google or Solid Explorer).
- ๐ Use a root conductor (if the phone is rooted).
- ๐ป Connect the phone to the computer through MTP and manually follow the path indicated.
Record files usually have an extension.m4a (AAC-encoding) or.amr (old models) file names are template-based: REC_YYYYMMDD_HHMMSS.m4a, where YYYYMMDD โ date of entry, and HHMMSS โ time.
โ ๏ธ Warning: Do not rename the records files manually through the file manager. This can cause a standard voice recorder to fail, as the application maintains an internal database with reference to the original file names.
How to find records through the standard Xiaomi voice recorder
The easiest way is to open the Dictaphone app itself (a microphone icon on the desktop or in the app menu), and all records are displayed in chronological order, with the duration and time of creation, to export the file:
- Open the tape recorder.
- Press three points (โฎ) top-right.
- Choose to Share or Export.
- Save a copy to a handy folder (such as Downloads or Music).
If the entry doesnโt appear on the list but youโre sure it was made, try:
- ๐ Update the list of records by pulling the screen down.
- ๐ Enable the display of hidden records in the settings of the recorder (if there is such a point).
- ๐ฑ Reboot the phone โ sometimes the database of the recorder hangs.
Search for records through file manager
If you prefer to work with files directly, use one of the proven file managers:
- ๐ Files by Google (free, shows hidden folders after setting up).
- ๐ ๏ธ Solid Explorer (paid, but with support for root and cloud storage).
- ๐ง FX File Explorer (comfortable for system directories).
Instructions for Files by Google:
- Open the app and go to the Internal Memory section.
- Press three stripes (โฐ) top-left.
- Select Settings โ Show hidden files.
- Manually cross the path /MIUI/sound_recorder/ or /Recordings/.
If the folder is not available, check the alternative paths:
/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.android.soundrecorder/files/
/storage/emulated/0/MIUI/voice_recorder/Enable the display of hidden files
Check the folder. /MIUI/sound_recorder/
Check the folder /Recordings/
Check the folder /Android/data/com.android.soundrecorder/
Reboot your phone if files are not displayed-->
Cloud Storage: Synchronization with Mi Cloud
Starting with MIUI 12, Xiaomi offers automatic synchronization of recordings of the recorder with the Mi Cloud, which is enabled in the settings of the recorder:
- Open the Dictaphone app.
- Go to Settings โ Sync with Mi Cloud.
- Turn on the switch and log in to your Xiaomi account.
Once activated, all new records will automatically be uploaded to the cloud to find them:
- Go to i.mi.com.
- Sign in with the same account as on your phone.
- Select the Recorder or Records section (depending on the version of the interface).
Please note:
- ๐ฅ Synchronization only works when connected to Wi-Fi (by default).
- ๐๏ธ In the free tariff Mi Cloud allocated only 5 GB, which may not be enough for long-term records.
- โณ Uploading to the cloud is delayed (up to 10 minutes after recording is completed).
โ ๏ธ Warning: If you delete the record from the recorder on your phone, it will also disappear from the Mi Cloud after 30 days (gets into the cart). To save the file forever, export it manually to another medium.
Recovery of deleted records
If the record was deleted accidentally, you can try to restore it.
| Method | Conditions | Instructions |
|---|---|---|
| The dictaphone basket | The recording was deleted no more than 30 days ago | Open the recorder โ Basket โ Select the record โ Restore |
| Recovery programmes | The phone did not restart after being removed. | Use DiskDigger or Recuva (requires root for deep scanning) |
| Backup copy of Mi Cloud | Synchronization to removal enabled | Go to Mi Cloud โ Recycle Bin โ Restore the file within 30 days |
| Local backup | Backup made through Settings โ System โ Backup | Restore the backup to your phone and retrieve the entries from /MIUI/backup/AllBackup/ |
To recover via DiskDigger:
- Install the app from Google Play.
- Select Full Scan (requires root).
- Filter the results by expanding.m4a or.amr.
- Save the recovered files to a safe place.
๐ก
If the record is critical (e.g., court evidence), do not use the phone after deleting - new data can overwrite the deleted file, it is better to immediately remove the memory card (if the record was on it) and connect to the computer for recovery.
Transferring records to a computer or other media
To make room on your phone or back up, you can transfer the records to your PC, flash drive, or cloud.
- ๐ฅ๏ธ Through USB-cable: Connect your phone to your computer in File Transfer mode (MTP). Go on the path of internal memory โ MIUI โ sound_recorder. Copy the necessary files to the hard disk.
- โ๏ธ Through the cloud: Upload files to Google Drive, Yandex Disk or Dropbox directly from your phone. Use the share feature in voice recorder and select the cloud service. ๐ Through the memory card: Insert microSD into the phone. In the file manager, move the records to a folder on the card (for example, /SDCard/Recordings/).
For mass export of all records, use the ADB command (USB Debugging enabled):
adb pull /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/sound_recorder/ C:\Xiaomi_Recordings\This command will copy all files from the voice recorder folder to the specified directory on the computer.
Problems with access to records and their solutions
Sometimes users are faced with the fact that the records are not played, displayed or disappear. Let's consider the typical problems and ways to fix them:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Records are not reproduced | File damage or unsupported codec | Try playing on PC via VLC Player or converting to.mp3 via Audacity |
| folder sound_recorder idle | Records are stored elsewhere or hidden | Check the alternative paths: /Recordings/ or /Android/data/com.miui.soundrecorder/ |
| The recorder does not keep records. | Lack of disk space or license failure | Clean up the phoneโs memory or reinstall the voice recorder app through Settings โ Apps |
| Records disappear after MIUI update | Resetting voice recorder settings or conflict versions | Check the basket in the recorder or restore from the backup of the Mi Cloud |
If the recordings are played with interference or terminated, the problem may be:
- ๐ค Faulty microphone (check recording in another app, such as Voice Recorder).
- ๐ฑ CPU overload (close background applications before recording).
- ๐ Battery savings (disable optimisation for voice recorder in Settings) โ Battery).
