Why Xiaomi Notes Can Disappear and Where to Look for Them
Have you created an important note on a Xiaomi smartphone but can't find it? Or have you lost all your records after resetting? It's not your forgetfulness, it's how Android and the MIUI shell manage data storage. Notes can be stored in three places: in the device's internal memory, in the Mi Cloud service, or in the database of a third-party application (for example, Google Keep or Evernote).
The main difficulty is that there is no single standard. Smartphone manufacturers (including Xiaomi) often modify standard Android apps, and notes in MIUI can be stored in non-obvious folders or even be linked to an account. For example, if you used the built-in Notes app from Xiaomi, your records are most likely synchronized with the Mi Cloud, but not actually stored in the phone's memory as separate files. And if notes were created through Google Keep, they are stored in the Google cloud, and you need the same account to access as you created.
In this article, weβll look at all possible scenarios, from searching for system notes to recovering deleted records, and learn how storage paths differ depending on the MIUI version and smartphone model, and what to do if sync is disabled.
1. Xiaomiβs built-in Notes app: Where data is stored
The standard Notes app (yellow notebook icon) in MIUI saves entries in two places by default:
- π± Local database on the device - files in the folder /data/data/com.miui.notes (access only with root rights).
- βοΈ Mi Cloud β syncs automatically if Note Sync is enabled in the settings.
It's important to understand that without root rights, you can't manually copy a database of notes from /data/, which is a protected system area.
- Open the Notes app and check if there is an Export button in the menu (three dots at the top).In some versions of MIUI, it allows you to save notes to a.txt or.zip file.
- If you don't export, use Mi Cloud. Go to i.mi.com from your computer, log in, and go to Notes, where you can download all your HTML entries.
β οΈ Note: When you reset your phone to factory settings, local notes (not synchronized with Mi Cloud) will be deleted without recovery!
2. Ways to Note Files in Xiaomi Memory (for root users)
If you have root access, you can manually extract the notebase.
| Type of data | The way in the system | File format |
|---|---|---|
| Local note database | /data/data/com.miui.notes/databases/notes.db | SQLite (.db) |
| Temporary files | /data/data/com.miui.notes/files/ | JPG, PNG (investments) |
| Cash miniature | /data/data/com.miui.notes/cache/ | Binary files |
To copy the database:
- Use a root-access file manager (such as Root Explorer or FX File Explorer).
- Go to /data/data/com.miui.notes/databases/ and copy the notes.db file to a memory card or cloud.
- To view the database, use programs like DB Browser for SQLite (Windows/macOS) or SQLite Editor (Android).
If root-rights are not available, but the phone is unlocked for debugging (USB Debugging), you can try to extract the base through ADB:
adb pull /data/data/com.miui.notes/databases/notes.db C:\notes_backup\β οΈ Note: Direct editing of the notes.db file may cause data corruption. it is recommended to make a backup copy first!

3. Cloud Storage: How to Find Notes in Mi Cloud
Mi Cloud is a cloud service from Xiaomi that automatically syncs notes, contacts, photos and other data to check if your records are saved in the cloud:
- π Go to i.mi.com and log in.
- π In the menu, select the Notes section - all synchronized entries will be displayed here.
- π₯ To export, click on the three dots next to the note and select Export (formats available) TXT or HTML).
If there are no notes in the cloud, check your phoneβs sync settings:
- Open your Settings β Xiaomi Account β Mi Cloud.
- Make sure the Notes switch is on.
- Click Sync if the data hasnβt been updated for a long time.
Important: Mi Cloud only provides 5GB of free space. If the cloud is crowded, new notes may not be saved. Check the free space in the Warehouse section of the Mi Cloud site.

If you lose access to your Mi Account but remember the linked phone number, restore your password via SMS. Without access to your account, cloud notes will be lost!
4 Third-Party Apps: Google Keep, Evernote and Others
If you donβt use standard Xiaomi Notes, but third-party apps, the storage paths will be different.
| Annex | The path to data (without root) | Cloud synchronization |
|---|---|---|
| Google Keep | No local access (only via API) | Google Drive (linked to a Google account) |
| Evernote | /Android/data/com.evernote/ (cache) | Evernote's Own Cloud |
| Microsoft OneNote | No local access. | OneDrive |
| ColorNote | /Android/data/com.socialnmobile.dictapps.notepad.color.note/ | Google Drive or its own cloud |
There is no local storage for Google Keep, all notes are stored only in the Google cloud.
- Open keep.google.com in your browser.
- Sign in with the same Google account that was used on your phone.
- To export, click Settings β Export Notes (Google Doc format is available).
If youβve used Evernote or OneNote, check out:
- π On the phone: Open the app and check the Archive or Cart section.
- π₯οΈ On PC: go to the official website of the service and log in.
5. Recovery of deleted notes: possible ways
If the notes were deleted, not everything is lost.
- ποΈ Check the cart in the Notes app (Remote or Recycle Bin section). MIUI deleted records are kept for up to 30 days.
- π Restore from backup if you were backup through Settings β Additionally. β Backup and reset, try to recover data from there.
- π οΈ Use recovery software (e.g., DiskDigger or EaseUS MobiSaver) that scans internal memory for deleted files.
For recovery via ADB (if notes were in the standard app):
adb shell
su
cd /data/data/com.miui.notes/databases/
ls -laIf the note.db file still exists, copy it (as described in Section 2). If the file is not, try recovering it with Autopsy or Scalpel (Linux skills are required).
β οΈ Note: Data recovery software (like Dr.Fone) often requires root rights and can be expensive. Before buying, check if the software supports your Xiaomi model (some devices with a high-end device). MIUI 14+ have enhanced data protection).

6.Transfer notes to new Xiaomi phone
If you have changed your smartphone and want to move notes, there are a few ways:
- Using Mi Cloud: On your old phone, enable synchronization of notes in Settings β Mi Cloud. On the new phone, log in to the same Xiaomi account and wait for sync.
- Through Google Account (if you used Google Keep): Sign in to the same Google account on your new device. Install Google Keep from the Play Market - notes will be downloaded automatically.
- Manual (via export): On an old phone, export notes to a file (e.g.,.txt or.html).
If you are transferring notes from iPhone to Xiaomi:
- π± On iPhone, export notes to ICalendar or CSV via iCloud.
- π₯οΈ On the computer, convert the file to TXT using Excel or online services.
- π² On Xiaomi, import through Google Keep or embedded notes.
7. Frequent problems and their solutions
Xiaomi users often face the following problems when working with notes:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Notes are not synchronized with Mi Cloud | Internet synchronization is disabled or not | Check your Mi Cloud settings β Notes and network connection |
| The Notes app is flying out | Cache or application data damaged | Clear the cache in Settings β Apps β Notes β Storage |
| You can't edit notes. | Read-only file or rights error | Reinstall the app or update MIUI |
| Notes are missing after MIUI update | Resetting application data during upgrade | Restore from backup or cloud |
If after the MIUI update, the notes disappeared, but sync with the Mi Cloud was enabled:
- Go to i.mi.com and check if the notes are displayed there.
- If yes, turn off the phone and turn on the sync again in Settings β Mi Cloud.
- If not, try to recover data through Xiaomi Service Center (requires confirmation of purchase of the device).
π‘
Always check your sync settings after you update MIUI β sometimes they are reset to default values.
