Xiaomi and Redmi smartphone owners often experience a situation where a downloaded document or music track suddenly disappears from view, due to the peculiarities of the organization of the file system in the MIUI shell and the new version of HyperOS. Understanding the logic of data storage allows you to instantly find the desired documents without using third-party software.
By default, Android directs all downloads to a specific directory, but users are often lost in the abundance of folders. In this article, we will discuss in detail where your files are located, how to change the way you save them, and why some folders can be hidden from prying eyes.
Once you understand the structure of the directories, you can effectively manage the memory of the device, which is especially true for models with a small amount of internal storage, where every megabyte counts.
Standard path to the download folder
The vast majority of files downloaded through the browser or messengers, by default, falls into the root directory Download. in the standard Files Explorer from Xiaomi, this folder is placed in a separate block “Downloads”, which makes navigation easier for beginners. However, when connecting a smartphone to a computer through USB-cable structure is displayed differently.
The complete physical path to this directory looks like /storage/emulated/0/Download. This is where it lies. APK-installer, PDF-documents and archives. If you use Chrome or the built-in Mi Browser, the default settings lead right here unless you manually changed them.
It is important to distinguish between system storage and SD-If you select a memory card as your primary storage location in your phone settings, the path will change to /storage/sdcard1/Download or similar, depending on the marking of the volume.
To quickly access this location, you can use the address bar in the explorer by entering the appropriate path, or simply go to the Documents category.
⚠️ Note: Do not delete files from system folders unless you are sure of their purpose. Some files at the root can be critical for the operation of applications.
💡
The standard Download folder is a universal storage for most types of files downloaded from the Internet.
Use of built-in conductor
The regular Files app on Xiaomi Redmi has advanced functionality that users often ignore. It not only shows folders, but also sorts data by type, date and size. To find a lost file, you just need to use the built-in classification.
At the bottom of the Explorer screen are tabs: Images, Videos, Documents, Music and Downloads, and clicking on any of them opens a filtered list, ignoring the physical location of files deep in the system, which is the fastest way to find a specific type of content.
And it also allows you to hide private files, and if you use Hide Files, you can only find them through a special category menu login, swipe up the screen from the bottom, and without that, files won't show up even when you're fully scanned.
The cleaner functionality built into the conductor also analyzes the download folder, and it suggests that you delete old or large files, freeing up space. Be careful when using automatic cleanup, so you don't delete important data.
How do I find hidden files?
Managing files through an embedded tool is much safer than through third-party applications, as the MIUI system has strict restrictions on accessing certain memory parts for third-party software.
Specificity of data storage in applications
Each app installed creates its own folder at the root of internal memory, such as Telegram storing media files in the Telegram folder, and WhatsApp in Android/media/com.whatsapp (on newer versions of Android) or just WhatsApp (on older ones), which creates confusion when a user searches for a picture from the messenger in common downloads.
Modern versions of Android (11, 12, 13 and above) have implemented strict restrictions on access to the Android/data folder, and now even file managers can't just look in without special permission, and this is done for the security of user data.
To access the application data on the new Redmi, you may need to give the Explorer extended permissions. The system will issue a request when you go to the Android folder, and you will need to click "Allow access to the folder." Without this step, the messenger folders will be empty or hidden.
Below is a table with examples of paths to popular apps to facilitate navigation:
| Annex | Path in memory (example) | Type of data |
|---|---|---|
| Telegram | /Telegram/Telegram Images | Photos and videos |
| Viber | /Viber/Media | Multimedia. |
| /Android/data/com.instagram.android/cache | Cash and drafts | |
| YouTube | /Android/data/com.google.android.youtube | Offline video |
⚠️ Attention: Direct editing of files in folders Android/data It can lead to incorrect application operation or loss of correspondence data.
Configure the ways of saving in browsers
If you don't like the standard location, you can change it, which is useful if you're downloading heavy files and want to save them right away. SD-map or in a separate folder to work. Let's consider the settings on the example of popular browsers.
In Google Chrome, you have to click three dots in the corner, select Settings, then Download Files. There's a Location option where you can choose another folder or memory card. However, Chrome on Android has limitations and often only allows you to choose between internal memory and the memory. SD-map without creating a deep folder structure.
The built-in Mi Browser is more flexible, and you can specify the exact path in the downloads section, so you can create /MyFiles/Work and assign it as your target, and this helps keep your work documents isolated from entertainment content.
For third-party browsers like Firefox or Opera, the logic is similar: look for the Downloads section in the app settings. Remember that changing the path does not move files that have already been downloaded, but only for new downloads.
💡
Create a separate inbox on the Explorer desktop and set up your browser to save there. Once a week, sort files by the right directories so you don't clutter up the system.
Regularly checking your download settings is important, especially after app updates, as newer versions sometimes reset the configuration to default.
Working with cloud storage
Modern Xiaomi smartphones are closely integrated with cloud services, and files may not lie in the phone’s memory, but stored in Google Drive, Yandex.Disk or the proprietary Mi Cloud. This saves space, but requires the Internet to access.
The Explorer app on Xiaomi often has a built-in Remote or Cloud tab where you can log in to accounts, in which case the files are displayed in shared feed but are physically on the company’s servers, and removing such a file from the list will remove it from the cloud forever.
Google Photos’ Cleanup Origins feature is a prime example of hybrid storage: photos are stored in full quality in the cloud, and compressed copies are left on your phone. If you try to find the original photo through the file manager, you may see a smaller file or not find it at all if the “Free Space” option is enabled.
A stable Internet is critical to working with the cloud. Make sure that the sync settings do not have a Wi-Fi-only restriction if you need to access files over a mobile network.
⚠️ Note: When you reset your phone to factory settings, all files synced to the cloud and deleted from your device may be lost if you don’t check the shopping cart in the cloud service.
Search for hidden and system files
Sometimes the files are hidden by system attributes. In Android, there is the concept of “hidden files” whose name begins with a dot (for example,.config).
To enable the display of such objects, open Files, click on the menu (three bars or dots) and select Settings, where you activate the "Show hidden files" switch, and then the directories will have semi-transparent folders and files that were previously invisible.
Also worth mentioning is the.thumbnails folder, which stores thumbnails for the gallery, and can grow to gigabytes. It's hidden by default. It's on the DCIM/.thumbnails path. Cleaning this folder will speed up the gallery, but when you open the photo again, the phone will cache.
For advanced users, a mask search is available. In the Explorer search bar, you can enter not only a name, but also an extension, such as.pdf or.apk, to find all the files of a certain type in the entire memory of the device, ignoring the folder structure.
