You downloaded an important document, photo or video to your Xiaomi, but you can't find it in your phone's memory? This problem is familiar to many users of Xiaomi's MIUI-based smartphone shell. The system automatically distributes downloaded files to different folders depending on their type, download source and even firmware version. In this article, we'll look at all possible storage locations for downloaded files, including hidden directories, features of different browsers and instant messengers, and learn how to customize the ways to save them to your needs.
Xiaomi (including the Redmi, POCO and Mi models) is very much in the way that MIUI uses its own content sorting algorithms, for example, Telegram files can be in one place, Chrome files can be in another, and Mi Browser files can be downloaded in a third place. In addition, the paths change after firmware updates, which further confuses users. We have collected relevant information for MIUI 12, 13, 14 and HyperOS, including instructions for old and new models.
Standard folders for downloaded files in MIUI
By default, most files downloaded through a browser or messengers fall into one of three main folders, and their location depends on the version of MIUI and the file type:
- ๐ Download (or Downloads) โ the main folder for files downloaded through browsers (Chrome, Mi Browser, Firefox: /storage/emulated/0/Download/.
- ๐ DCIM โ Here are stored media files (photos, videos), including those downloaded from messengers or social networks: /storage/emulated/0/DCIM/.
- ๐ MIUI โ Browser is a download folder from Mi Browser's proprietary browser: /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/Browser/Download/.
On smartphones with HyperOS (the newest shell from Xiaomi), the folder structure may be slightly different. For example, downloads from Chrome still fall into Download, but files from Mi Browser can now be stored in /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.android.browser/files/Download/.
It is important to consider that some applications (such as WhatsApp or VK) create their own folders at the root of the memory. Their names usually correspond to the name of the application: WhatsApp Media, VK, Telegram, etc. Inside them, files are sorted by types: Images, Video, Documents.
How to find downloaded files through the file manager
The easiest way to find a downloaded file is to use Xiaomiโs File Manager, which is pre-installed on all devices and has a user-friendly interface for searching:
- Open the Files app (the folder icon on the desktop or in the application menu).
- Go to the Categories tab (or Categories in English).
- Select the file type: Images, Videos, Audio, Documents or Downloads.
- For an accurate search, use the search bar at the top of the screen โ type in the file name or its extension (e.g.,.pdf or.apk).
If the file is not located, check the hidden folders.
- In the file manager, click on three dots (โฎ) top-right.
- Select Settings โ Show hidden files.
- Go back to the root directory and check the folders with a dot at the beginning of the title (e.g.,.thumbdata or.nomedia).
โ๏ธ File Search via File Manager
On some Xiaomi models (such as the Redmi Note 10 Pro or POCO X3 Pro), the file manager has a separate Download tab where all recently downloaded files are collected regardless of their original location.
Where files from popular applications are stored
Every application on Xiaomi can save files in its folder. Below we have collected the current paths for the most popular services. Note that some applications (for example, Telegram) allow you to change the save path in your settings.
| Annex | The way to the folder | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome | /storage/emulated/0/Download/ | You can change the browser settings: Settings โ Downloads โ Download folder. |
| Mi Browser | /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/Browser/Download/ | On HyperOS, the path may be different: /Android/data/com.android.browser/files/Download/. |
| Telegram | /storage/emulated/0/Telegram/ | Files are sorted by types: Telegram Images, Telegram Video, etc. |
| /storage/emulated/0/WhatsApp/Media/ | Media files from chat rooms are stored here, but can be hidden by a.nomedia file. | |
| VK | /storage/emulated/0/VK/ | Audio and video from VK are saved in the Music and Video subfolders. |
If you downloaded a file through Google Drive or another cloud service, it may be in the folder of that application. For example, for Drive, the path will be /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.google.android.apps.docs/files/. Please note that access to this folder may be restricted without root rights.
How to Access Folders Android/data rootless
Some apps (such as Instagram or TikTok) donโt store files directly into your phoneโs memory, but only cache them. To save videos or photos from these services, use Save in the app itself or take a screenshot.
Why Files Are Not Shown in the Download Folder
A common problem with Xiaomi users is that downloaded files do not appear in the Download folder, although the download was successful.
- ๐ Automatic sorting: MIUI It distributes files by type, for example, an image from a browser can immediately enter the DCIM, Not Download.
- ๐ฑ Application limitations: Some programs (such as Facebook) store files in internal memory that is not available without root.
- ๐.nomedia: If this file is in the folder, the media files will not appear in the gallery or file manager.
- ๐๏ธ Cache instead of saving: Some apps (like YouTube) cache videos but donโt permanently save them.
To check if your files are hidden, follow the following steps:
- Open File Manager and go to Settings.
- Activate the option to show hidden files.
- Go back to the root directory and find the folder where the file should be located (for example, Download).
- Check for a.nomedia file โ if you have one, delete or rename it.
๐ก
If the file isn't displayed in the gallery but you're sure it's downloaded, try rebooting the phone. Sometimes MIUI doesn't update the media base right after you download it.
Another possible cause is a download error: Check the notifications: if the download is interrupted, the file may have been partially saved (with the extension.crdownload or.part), which must be deleted and re-downloaded.
How to Change the Default Way of Saving Files
If you don't like the standard location of downloaded files, you can change the way you save most applications, and let's look at how to do that for the most popular services.
For Google Chrome:
- Open your browser and click on three dots (โฎ) top-right.
- Go to Settings โ Downloads.
- Click Downloads folder and select a new directory (like Documents or create your own folder).
For Mi Browser:
- Open your browser and go to Settings (cog icon).
- Select additionally โ Download folder.
- Specify a new path (e.g. /storage/emulated/0/MyDownloads/).
For Telegram:
- Open Telegram and go to Settings (three lines in the upper left corner).
- Select Data and Memory โ Folder for downloads.
- Enter a new folder or allow the saving to SD-map (if installed).
๐ก
Changing the save path doesn't carry files that have already been downloaded -- it only works for new downloads. Old files will have to be moved manually.
Some Xiaomi models (e.g. Redmi 9 or POCO M3) may have a โCannot Save to This Placeโ error when trying to change the save path, due to MIUI limitations on writing to certain folders, in which case create a new folder at the root of memory (e.g. MyDownloads) and specify it in the application settings.
Searching for files via computer (USB and ADB)
If you canโt find the file on the phone itself, connect Xiaomi to your computer via the phone. USB-This will allow you to access all the folders, including those hidden in the file manager of the phone.
Instructions for Windows:
- Connect your phone to your PC via USB.
- On your phone, select File Transfer (MTP) mode in the connection notification.
- Open this computer โ your Xiaomi will appear as a removable disk.
- Go to the Internal Storage folder and search for the file name.
If the file is not located, try using ADB (Android Debug Bridge), a tool for advanced users to access system folders.
adb shell
ls /storage/emulated/0/Download/This command will display a list of all files in the Download folder. If you're looking for a file elsewhere, replace the path in the command.
๐ก
To work with ADB, you need to enable Developer Mode on your phone (7 times click on the MIUI version in the settings) and allow Debugging over USB.
Note that some folders (e.g. /Android/data/) may not be readable without root permissions, in which case you will have to use specialized applications like FX File Explorer or Solid Explorer that can work with system directories.
What to do if a file is lost or deleted
If you downloaded a file, but you can't find it, and it's not in the folders, it may have been deleted by mistake or saved in an unexpected place.
- ๐ Device-wide search: Use the built-in File Manager search or Google Files app that can search by file content.
- ๐๏ธ Checking the basket: in MIUI There's a bin where files are stored 30 days after deletion. โ Basket.
- ๐ PC Recovery: Use programs like Recuva or DiskDigger to scan your phoneโs memory (requires a connection to the phone). USB).
- โ๏ธ Cloud Copy Checker: If you have backup enabled in Mi Cloud or Google Drive, the file could be synced there.
If the file was recently deleted, try to restore it through the Recycle Bin:
- Open Files and go to the Recycle Bin tab.
- Find the file you want and click on it.
- Select Restore - the file will return to the original folder.
How to increase the storage period of files in the basket
If a file has been permanently deleted, try using data recovery applications like Dumpster or Undeleter, which scan your phone's memory for deleted files and can return them if the disk space has not been overwritten.
