You downloaded an important document, photo or video to your Xiaomi, but can't find a file in a gallery or a explorer? This problem is familiar to many smartphone users on Xiaomi's MIUI, the company's shell. The system distributes downloads to different folders depending on the source: browsers, instant messengers, and even some applications create their own directories that are not always visible in a standard file manager.
In this article, we will not only show you all the possible storage locations for downloaded files on Xiaomi Redmi devices, POCO And Mi, but we also explain why files can disappear from view, how to return them if they were deleted, and how to configure convenient saving of downloads in one place. MIUI 14 and HyperOS β a new firmware that Xiaomi is actively implementing in 2026.
1. Standard folders for downloads on Xiaomi: where to look first
Most files downloaded through a browser or messengers are saved by default in one of the three system folders, and their location depends on the version of MIUI and the smartphone model, but the overall structure remains similar.
The main directories for search:
- π /storage/emulated/0/Download β The main Download folder, where files from browsers (Chrome, Mi Browser), some messengers and email clients get to, is the first place to look for downloaded files.
- π /storage/emulated/0/DCIM β Here are photos and videos saved from social networks (Instagram, VK, Telegram), as well as screenshots (Screenshots folder).
- π /storage/emulated/0/Pictures or /storage/emulated/0/Images β Alternative storage for images from some apps (such as WhatsApp or Facebook).
To open these folders quickly:
- Open the Files app (an icon with a yellow folder).
- Go to the Categories tab and select Downloads, Images or Videos.
- If the file is not in categories, tap three dots in the upper right corner β Show hidden files.
π‘
On some POCO models, the Download folder may be called Downloads (plural). If you don't find it, check both options.
2. Where files from specific applications are stored: browsers, messengers, social networks
Every application on Xiaomi can save files in its folder, which makes it difficult to find, but knowing the structure, you quickly find what you want. Below is a path chart for popular services.
| Annex | The way to the folder | File types |
|---|---|---|
| Google Chrome | /storage/emulated/0/Download | Any (PDF, APK, ZIP, images) |
| Mi Browser | /storage/emulated/0/Download or /storage/emulated/0/Xiaomi/Download | Any, but often APKs are saved to /Xiaomi/Download |
| Telegram | /storage/emulated/0/Telegram/Telegram Documents or Telegram Images | Documents, photos, videos, stickers |
| /storage/emulated/0/WhatsApp/Media | Photos, videos, voice messages (in WhatsApp Images, WhatsApp Video subfolders) | |
| VK (Vkontakte) | /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/ru.vk.vkapp/cache | Photos and videos from the tape (stored in a temporary cache) |
β οΈ Attention: Files from VK, Instagram and some other social networks are often saved in the app cache (/Android/data/...). These folders can be hidden without root rights:
- Connect your smartphone to your PC and use Windows/macOS Explorer.
- Or install a file manager with root support (such as FX File Explorer).
3. Hidden folders and system directories: how to find βinvisibleβ files
Sometimes files are downloaded to system folders that donβt appear in Xiaomiβs standard Explorer, which may be because of:
- π Application settings (for example, Telegram by default hides media files from the gallery).
To see the hidden files:
- To access system folders (/data, /system) root rights will be required or ADB-team.
The most βproblematicβ hidden directories:
- ποΈ /storage/emulated/0/Android/data β This is where you store your cache and your app downloads, and for example, files from TikTok or Likee are often in subfolders. /Android/data/com.zhiliaoapp.musically/cache.
- ποΈ /storage/emulated/0/.thumbnails β Image miniatures (sometimes take up gigabytes of memory!).
- ποΈ /storage/emulated/0/MIUI β Service shell files, including logs and temporary data.

4. How to change the default file saving path
If you're tired of looking for downloads in different folders, you can set up the storage of all files in one place, both in the settings of individual applications and globally for the entire system.
For browsers (Chrome, Mi Browser):
- Open the browser β tap on three points β Settings β Downloads.
- Select the Download Folder and specify the path (e.g. /storage/emulated/0/MyDownloads).
For Telegram:
- Go to Settings β Data and memory β folder for downloads.
- Select internal memory and specify your folder (for example, Telegram_Downloads).
Global configuration for MIUI (requires HyperOS or MIUI 14+):
- Go to Settings β Storage β additionally.
- Select the default download folder and specify the desired path.
Create a folder at the root of memory (for example, MyDownloads)|Set up a path in the browser|Set up a path in messengers|Check access rights (allow recording)|Move old files to a new folder-->
5 What to do if files βdisappearβ: Recover remote downloads
If you downloaded a file but canβt find it, there are three possible scenarios:
- The file is saved in a non-obvious folder (see section 2).
- The file is deleted but not yet overwritten (can be restored).
- The file did not download due to an error (check notifications).
Recovery methods:
- π Use applications like DiskDigger or Recuva (for PCs) that scan memory for deleted files.
- π± Check the basket in Files (Basket in the Category tab). MIUI Deleted files are stored there for 15 days.
β οΈ Note: Do not write new data to your device after deleting a file, which reduces the chances of recovery, and avoid memory cleaners like Clean Master, which often erase the leftovers of deleted files.
π‘
On Xiaomi with HyperOS, the cart works differently: files from it are deleted irrevocably after 7 days (instead of 15 in MIUI).
6. Features of working with SD-card and external drives
If you are using a microSD or OTG-The drive, the files can be saved there by default or by manual selection:
- π Nana MIUI 12-14 Some apps (such as WhatsApp) donβt know how to save media on their website. SD-root-card.
- π HyperOS support SD It has improved, but the path to the files will be different: /storage/XXXX-XXXX/Download (where XXXX-XXXX β ID map).
- π When connected to OTG (flash drive) files are saved in /storage/usbotg/.
To transfer files from internal memory to SD:
- Open Files β select the desired files β Move.
- Choose. SD-map and specify the destination folder.
- Confirm the movement (record permission may be required).
β οΈ Note: Some Redmi models (e.g. Redmi Note 12) when retrieved SD-Maps of the path to files are broken and applications stop seeing them. To avoid this, always use the Safe Retrieval feature in the notification curtain.
7.Disorders with access to files: rights, errors and solutions
Sometimes files are on your device, but you can't open them or move them. Common reasons and solutions:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| You can't move the file. | MIUI limitations on writing to system folders | Use the βFilesβ from Xiaomi or give permission through the ADB: adb shell pm grant com.android.documentsui android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE |
| File won't open. | Damaged by download or incompatible format | Check the checksum (MD5) or download again. For APK, use APKMirror. |
| The folder is empty, but the space is occupied. | Hidden files or cache | Enable the display of hidden files or clear the app cache in Settings β Apps |
If you see a message βNo access to the folderβ:
- Check if the password is set to the folder (in Files β Secure folder).
- Update the firmware: MIUI 14 and HyperOS fix many of the permission errors.
- Reset the Application Rights: Settings β Applications β Rights Management β Reset.
