Why tape recordings “disappear” from the gallery and how to find them

You recorded an important audio file on a Xiaomi smartphone but can't find it in a standard gallery or file manager? This problem is familiar to many MIUI users - the proprietary shell often hides system files from the user's eyes, and the recorder's records do not always get into the media library. Unlike photos or videos, the audio files are stored in separate directories, the path to which depends on the firmware version, smartphone model and even regional settings.

Standard ways to store records of a voice recorder on Xiaomi

In most cases, audio files from the recorder are stored in the internal memory of the smartphone in one of the following ways: these directories are accessible through any file manager (for example, Files from Xiaomi or Solid Explorer), but can be hidden from display in the gallery.

The main folders where MIUI stores records are:

• 📁 /storage/emulated/0/Recordings/ — standard location for most models (including Redmi and POCO). Files are sorted by date and have an extension.m4a or.mp3.
• 📁 /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/sound_recorder/ — Alternative path for older versions of firmware (up to) MIUI 12).
• 📁 /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.miui.soundrecorder/ — Application folder where temporary files or backups can be stored.
• 📁 /storage/emulated/0/Download/Recordings/ — if the settings of the recorder selected saving in "Downloads».

To open these folders:

1. Open the Files app (the folder icon on the desktop).
2. Go to the Device or Internal Memory section.

If the Recordings folder is empty, check the filter by date in the file manager – sometimes old records are “hidden” outside the visible range.

Why entries are not displayed in the gallery and how to fix it

Files from the recorder often do not appear in the standard Xiaomi gallery (Gallery or Photos) for three reasons:

1. No media scan: Android does not add audio files to the library automatically if they are saved in a non-standard folder.
2. Unsupported format: MIUI can save.m4a (AAC) records that some players don't recognize.
3. Hidden system files: folders with records can be marked as hidden (attribute.nomedia).

To have the recordings appear in the gallery:

Delete the.nomedia file in the entries folder | Move files to /Music/ or /Downloads/| Update the media library through Settings → Memory → Update media files |Use a third-party player (e.g., VLC)

Where to look for records on models with HyperOS (Xiaomi 14, Redmi Note 13 and later)

With the release of HyperOS (replacing MIUI on new models), the file storage structure has changed, and the recorder can now be stored in the following places:

On HyperOS, records can automatically sync with Mi Cloud if the voice recorder settings enable the option Backup. Check cloud storage along the way: Mi Cloud → Recorder (only available for Xiaomi-based accounts).

If you’re using HyperOS and don’t find the Recordings folder, try:

• 🔍 Type:audio in the file manager search will show all audio files on the device.
• 📥 Install a third-party voice recorder (like Easy Voice Recorder) and check where it saves files by default.

How to recover deleted recordings from a voice recorder

If you accidentally delete a record from the Dictaphone app or it disappears after resetting, there are several ways to return it, success depends on how long it has been since it was deleted and whether the smartphone used memory cleaning functions (for example, garbage cleanup in MIUI).

Recovery methods:

1. Recycle Bin Check: In some versions of MIUI, deleted records are placed in the Recycle Bin (folder /storage/emulated/0/.Trash/). Shelf life is 30 days.
2. Use of recovery programs: 📱 DiskDigger (for Android) – scans internal memory for deleted files. 💻 Recuva or EaseUS (for PC) – if you connect your smartphone to your computer in file transfer mode.

Verification of backup copies

• ☁️ Mi Cloud – if synchronization was enabled.

The chances of recovery are maximum in the first 24 hours after deleting, and the more active you are using your smartphone (install apps, shoot videos), the lower the probability of returning files.

How to Change the Default Records Saving Place

If you don't like the standard location of the recorder files, you can change it in the app settings or with third-party tools.
