Have you downloaded your favorite album or saved a song from your messenger but canโt find it on your phone? Xiaomi smartphones store music files in several places, depending on how the track got into the deviceโs memory. In this article, weโll look at all possible locations, from the standard Music folder to hidden application directories, and learn how to manage audio files without loss.
The feature of MIUI firmware is that it automatically sorts media files by type, but sometimes user actions (such as downloading through a browser or saving from Telegram) violate this structure. We will show how to find music manually through the explorer, which system folders are responsible for storing audio, and what to do if files โdisappearโ after updating or resetting settings.
Standard folders for music in Xiaomi
By default, all audio files that you download through your browser, download from music stores or transfer from your PC fall into one of two folders:
- ๐ /storage/emulated/0/Music/ โ The main directory for the music tracks, where files with extensions are stored.mp3,.flac,.wav and others.
- ๐ /storage/emulated/0/Download/ โ If you downloaded a song via a browser (such as Chrome or Mi Browser), it will likely end up here.
These folders are visible in any file manager, including Xiaomi's standard Explorer, to open them:
- Launch the Files app (folder icon).
- Go to the Device (or Internal Memory) tab.
- Scroll down to the Music or Download folders.
If you don't have a Music folder, don't worry. It's automatically created when you first save an audio file to that directory, for example, if you manually move a song from Download to Music, the folder will appear.
Hidden app folders: where tracks from Spotify, VK Music and other services are stored
Many streaming services (e.g. Spotify, Yandex Music, VK Music) cache tracks for offline listening in their own hidden folders. These files are not displayed in the standard Explorer, but they can be found through a Root Explorer or special applications like FX File Explorer.
Here are the ways to cache popular music apps:
| Annex | The way to the cache | File format |
|---|---|---|
| Spotify | /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.spotify.music/files/ | .ogg (encrypted) |
| Yandex Music | /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/ru.yandex.music/files/ | .mp3 (available in the annex only) |
| VK Music | /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.vk.audio/files/ | .mp3 (can be removed) |
| Deezer | /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/deezer.android.app/files/ | .mp3 (DRM-defence) |
โ ๏ธ Note: Files from these folders are often protected DRM They can't be copied to another phone, they'll only play back in the original app, like Spotify tracks that are.ogg, but without the encryption key, you can't open them even in the original app. VLC.
If you need to save music from a streaming service forever, use special programs to record sound from the screen (for example, Audio Recorder) or look for tracks in open sources.

Music on a memory card: how to find and transfer
If you use a microSD card on a Xiaomi phone, music can be stored there in two scenarios:
- Automatic Save: Some apps (such as Mi Music) offer to select a memory card as the default download location.
- Manual transfer: You manually moved files from internal memory to SD.
The path to music on a memory card usually looks like this:
/storage/XXXX-XXXX/Music/
/storage/XXXX-XXXX/Download/where XXXX-XXXX is your cardโs unique identifier (e.g. 1234-5678).
To transfer music from the internal memory to the map:
Open the Files app
Select the desired tracks in the Music or Download folder
Click "Move" (the icon of the folder with the arrow)
Select a memory card and destination folder (such as Music)
Confirm the transfer.-->
โ ๏ธ Note: Some Xiaomi models (e.g. Redmi Note) 10 or POCO X3) The memory cards are formatted as internal storage (Adoptable Storage technology), in which case the path to the files will be the same as for internal memory: /storage/emulated/0/.... Clarify the format of yours SD in settings: Settings โ Warehouse โ Memory map.
Search for music through system search and third-party applications
If you donโt remember where you saved the track, use the built-in search in the Files:
- Open the Files app.
- Touch the magnifying glass icon (๐) top-right.
- Enter the name of a song or artist (like Imagine Dragons).
- In the Audio tab, all the files found will be displayed.
For a deeper search, use third-party guides:
- ๐ FX File Explorer โ shows hidden and system folders, supports Root access.
- ๐ Solid Explorer โ a convenient interface with sorting by file types.
- ๐ MiXplorer โ lightweight conductor with support for cloud storage.
If the music is not available, check out:
- File extension (sometimes tracks are saved as.m4a or.aac).
- The folders of the apps you downloaded your music from (e.g. /Android/data/com.telegram.messenger/... for Telegram).
- Recycle bin in the Explorer (suddenly the files were deleted accidentally).

What to do if the music disappears after an update or reset
After updating MIUI or resetting the settings to factory users often face loss of music files.
- ๐ Cache Clearing: System Updates Can Delete Temporary Files, Including Music App Cache.
- ๐ฑ Factory reset: If there was no backup, files from internal memory are deleted.
- ๐ง Changes in folder structure: new versions MIUI Sometimes transfer media files to other directories.
To restore the music:
- Check the Recycle Bin: Files Explorer has a Recycle Bin section where files are stored for 30 days.
- Use Recovery Programs: DiskDigger or Recuva (requires Root for deep scanning).
- Restore from backup: If youโve synced files with Mi Cloud or Google Drive, check the cloud.
Important: After resetting the files from /storage/emulated/0/ folder are permanently deleted if there was no backup, and the only chance of returning them is to use the recovery programs in the first hours after the incident (until the data was overwritten).

โ ๏ธ Note: Some Xiaomi models (e.g. Redmi 9 or Xiaomi) POCO M3) When you choose a memory card as the default storage location, you may experience write errors, which is due to Android's restrictions on accessing external drives, so save the files to internal memory and then manually transfer them to the storage. SD.
Optimizing Music Storage: How to Save Space
Music files, especially.flac or.wav, take up a lot of space. Here's how to free up memory:
- ๐ต Convert to.mp3: Use applications like Audio Converter to reduce file size without critical quality loss.
- ๐๏ธ Remove duplicates: Duplicate Files Fixer will find repeating tracks.
- โ๏ธ Move to the cloud: upload music to Google Drive, Mi Cloud or Yandex Disk, and leave only playlists on your phone for offline listening.
- ๐ต Turn off the cache of streaming services: in the Spotify or Yandex Music settings, limit the size of the cache or clear it.
Comparison of audio formats by size and quality:
| Format | Quality. | Size (by 1 minute) | Suitable for |
