You downloaded an important document, photo or video to your Xiaomi Redmi Note, but can’t find a file in your phone’s memory? This problem is familiar to many users — especially those who recently switched from iPhone or other brands. The fact is that MIUI (the Xiaomi brand shell) organizes file storage differently than standard Android. In this article, we will analyze all possible places where your downloads may be hiding, including system folders, cloud storage and even remote data recovery.
Whether you have a Redmi Note 12 Pro+, Note 11S or older Note 9T, the file search principles are the same for all devices on MIUI 12-14. We will also show you how to set up a convenient download display, avoid chaos in your phone’s memory, and what to do if a file “disappears” after downloading.
1. the standard Download folder is the first place to search
Most files downloaded via a browser (Chrome, Mi Browser) or messengers (Telegram, WhatsApp) are saved by default to the Download folder (also known as Downloads), which can be found in two ways:
- 📁 Through the conductor MIUI: Open the Files app (yellow folder icon) → Select the tab "Category» → tap on "Downloads».
- 🔍 Through Search: In the same Files app, click on the magnifying glass at the top and type Download or file name.
Note: If you downloaded a file via Safari (on iPhone) or Edge and then transferred it to Xiaomi via cable, it could be saved in the Internal Storage → DCIM → Screenshots or root directory. Also, some browsers (for example, Firefox) create their own download folders – their names may differ.
⚠️ Note: If the Download folder is empty, but you have definitely downloaded files, check your browser settings. In Chrome, you can change the save path: open the menu → «Downloads» → «Settings» → «Preservation site».
2. folders of specific applications: Telegram, WhatsApp, Viber and others
Messengers and social networks save files not in the shared folder Download, but in their own directories.
| Annex | The way to the folder | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Telegram | Internal Storage → Telegram → Telegram Documents or Telegram Images | Files are sorted by type. Videos are sorted by Telegram Video. |
| Internal Storage → WhatsApp → Media | Inside the Media folder there are subfolders for photos, videos, documents. | |
| Viber | Internal Storage → Viber → media | Files can be hidden – turn on the display of hidden folders in the Explorer settings. |
| Internal Storage → Pictures → Instagram | Only photos and videos downloaded through the Save button are saved here. |
To quickly find these folders, open the Files app» → Go to the tab "Category» → Select "Applications." This shows all the programs that have created their directories in the memory of the phone. SD-card, some files can be saved to it - check the "Devices" tab in the explorer.
💡
In Telegram, you can change the folder for download: open Settings → Download folder and select a convenient directory, for example, Download.
3. Hidden files and system folders: how to see them
Some files (such as those downloaded through Torrent clients or specialized programs) can be saved in hidden folders, which are not displayed in MIUI Explorer by default, but are easily visible:
- Open the Files app.
- Slip on three dots in the upper right corner → “Settings”.
- Activate the “Show hidden files” switch.
After that, in the root directory (Internal Storage) folders with a dot at the beginning of the name will appear, for example:
- 📂.download - temporary download files.
- 📂.thumbnails - miniatures of images.
- 📂.cache (sometimes the downloaded data is stored here).
On Xiaomi Redmi Note with MIUI 13+, hidden folders can be displayed in gray, which is normal. If you searched for a file through Total Commander or ES Explorer but didn't find it, try using the built-in MIUI Explorer - it's better integrated with the system and shows more directories.
⚠️ Note: Do not delete files from folders.android_secure or.data, which can cause app crashes, and if you find a file you want, copy it to a secure location (e.g. Download).
4. Cloud storage: Mi Cloud, Google Drive, Yandex.Disk
If the file is not found in local memory, check the cloud services. Xiaomi defaults to save data to Mi Cloud, but many users also use Google Drive or Yandex.Disk. Here's how to check each one:
- 🌥️ Mi Cloud: Open "Settings» → «Accounts» → «Mi Account» → «Mi Cloud. check the Gallery, Notes and Files sections».
- 📁 Google Drive: Launch the app → Go to the Files tab» → «Downloads” or “Recently».
- 💾 Yandex.Disk: Open the application → Check the “Downloads” or “Shared Access” folder».
Especially often files are “lost” when downloaded via Chrome to Redmi Note, if the browser settings enable automatic backup in Google Drive.
- Open Chrome → menu (three dots) → Downloads.
- Slip on three dots in the upper right corner → “Settings”.
- Turn off the option “Save downloads to Drive”.

5. Search by file name: how to find downloaded in seconds
If you remember the name of the file (or part of it), use the built-in search in the Files application. MIUI consider:
- 🔤 File name (including extension, such as.pdf or.apk).
- 📅 Date of creation or modification.
- 📌 File type (document, image, video, etc.).
To narrow down the results, use filters:
- Open the Files app → click on the magnifying glass.
- Enter the file name (e.g. contract or *.jpg).
- Slip on the filter (funnel icon) → select “File type” or “Date range”.
If the search does not give results, try:
- 🔄 Use synonyms (for example, enter a scan instead of a passport).
- 📂 Check it out. SD-map (if installed).
- 🔍 Enter file extension (for example, *.mp4 video).
1. Check the Download folder
2. Look into the folders of messengers (Telegram, WhatsApp)
3. Enable the display of hidden files
4.Search in Mi Cloud and Google Drive
5. Use a search by name in the conductor

6. Recovery of deleted files: if nothing helps
If the file has been deleted but it is important, try to restore it with specialized programs.
| Programme | Features | Link (Play Market) |
|---|---|---|
| DiskDigger | It restores photos, videos, documents, works without root. | Download |
| Dumpster | Analogue of the Android cart. We need to install the ASAP. | Download |
| Recuva (for PC) | It requires connecting the phone to the computer via USB. | Official website |
Before recovery:
- ❌ Don’t save new files to your phone – they can overwrite deleted data.
- 🔌 Connect the Redmi Note to charging – the process can take a long time.
- 📵 Turn on the plane mode to avoid interruptions.
⚠️ Note: Programs like DiskDigger don't guarantee 100% recovery, and the more time has passed since deleting, the lower the odds. If the file is critical (such as a contract or photo of documents), contact Xiaomi’s service center – they can extract data using professional hardware.
💡
If the file was deleted less than a day ago, the chances of recovery are maximum, and after a week, the probability drops sharply due to overwriting the data.
7.Setting up a convenient file saver: how to avoid chaos in the future
To avoid losing your downloaded files, set them up in one place. Here's how to do it:
- 📥 In Chrome or Mi Browser, open your download settings and specify the Internal path. Storage/Download.
- 📎 In messengers: in Telegram and WhatsApp, select a folder to save (for example, Telegram). → Download).
- 📁 For torrents: in uTorrent or FrostWire, change the save path to Internal Storage/Torrents.
We also recommend:
- 🗃️ Create folders by categories: Documents, Photos, Videos, Music.
- 🔄 Regularly clean the Download folder of unnecessary files (for example, once a month).
- ☁️ Automatically backup important files in Google Drive or Mi Cloud.
If you work with files often, install an alternative explorer, such as Solid Explorer or FX File Explorer.
- 🔍 Advanced search for file content (not just by name).
- 📂 Two-panel mode for easy copying.
- 🔐 Encrypting important folders.
