What is Auto-Reservation and Why is it Important for Xiaomi Owners
Smartphones have become the real repositories of our digital lives: photos, contacts, messages, documents, all of which take up gigabytes of memory and have enormous value. Losing that data can be a serious problem, especially when it comes to working information or personal memories, and this is where autoreservation comes in, a feature that automatically stores copies of your data in the cloud or on external media.
On Xiaomi smartphones, auto-reservation is implemented through the Mi Cloud and Google Drive services, and also supports local copying on the mobile phone. SD-Unlike manual reservations, where the user runs the process himself, auto-reservation works in the background without the owner's input, saving time and reducing the risk of forgetting to make a backup. This is especially true for those who frequently update the firmware, reset settings or switch to a new phone.
But how does this feature work on Xiaomi devices? What data can and can't be saved? And most importantly, how do you set up auto-reservation so that it works efficiently without wasting any extra traffic and battery power? You'll find the answers to these questions in our guide.
How auto-reservation works on Xiaomi: technical details
Authorization on Xiaomi smartphones is based on two key components: cloud services (Mi Cloud or Google Drive) and on-premises storage (SD-The process is started on a schedule or when certain events occur, such as:
- π Wi-Fi connection (to save mobile traffic)
- π Charging your phone (to avoid running the battery)
- π± Inactivity of the device (for example, at night)
- π² Update the firmware or reset settings
It's important to understand that Xiaomi uses an incremental backup, which means that only changes from the last copy are saved, not all the data in the whole. For example, if you add 10 new photos to a gallery, it will only go to the cloud, not the entire DCIM folder, which saves space and traffic.
However, there is a caveat: some data, such as installed applications or system settings, are not fully backed up, for example, Wi-Fi passwords or game data may not be saved. The full list of supported file types is shown in the table below.
| Type of data | Mi Cloud | Google Drive | Local backup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contacts | β | β | β |
| Photographs and videos | β (compressed) | β (original) | β |
| Communications (SMS/MMS) | β | β | β |
| Call logs | β | β | β |
| Annexes and their data | β οΈ (partly) | β (Google) | β |
β οΈ Note: If you use Mi Cloud to reserve photos, remember that they are saved in compressed format by default. To download originals, go to Settings β Mi Cloud β gallery β Download quality and select Original.
Step-by-step setting up auto-reservation through Mi Cloud
Xiaomiβs proprietary cloud is the easiest way to set up automatic redundancy.
- Open Settings and go to the Mi Account (Xiaomi account).
- Sign in or create a new account if you donβt already have one.
- Go back to Settings and select Mi Cloud.
- Activate Backup Slider and click Backup Settings.
- Select data to save (contacts, messages, notes, etc.) and set up a schedule.
By default, the backup starts once a day when you connect to Wi-Fi and charge.
- π Go to Backup Settings β Automatic backup.
- π Choose the interval: Every day, every week or every month.
- πΆ Indicate whether mobile traffic is allowed (not recommended due to high cost).
Connect your phone to stable Wi-Fi| Charge your battery at least 50% |Check free space in Mi Cloud (free 5GB) |Disable battery optimization for Mi Cloud in your application settings-->
If you want to manually start a backup (e.g. before updating your firmware), click Backup β Create a backup now. the process can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour depending on the amount of data.
β οΈ Note: When you first book, Mi Cloud may request access to Special Permits (including Overlaying Windows) for the service to function properly β allow the request or the backup will not end.
Google Drive Authorization: Alternative for Xiaomi Users
If you prefer the Google ecosystem or you already have a Google One subscription, you can set up auto-reservation via Google Drive.
- π Cross-platform: Data will be available on any device with your Google account.
- π More free space: 15GB vs. 5GB in Mi Cloud.
- π Automatic synchronization of photos in original quality (when selecting the option High quality).
To activate autoreservation:
- Open Settings β Google β Backup.
- Enable backup slider in Google Drive.
- Click on Backup Settings and select a Google account.
- Specify what data you need to save (contacts, calendar, photos, etc.).
To automatically upload photos:
- Open the Google Photos app.
- Go to Settings β Backup and Synchronization.
- Enable the function and select quality (Original or High).
Please note: Google Drive does not reserve SMS, call logs, or some system settings, and it is better to use Mi Cloud or local backup for this data.

If you use both services (Mi Cloud and Google Drive), disable duplicate features (such as photo reservations) to avoid wasting space.
Local Auto Reservation: How to Save Data SD-card
If you don't trust cloud services or you have limited Internet access, you can set up auto-reservation to external media, and on Xiaomi, this is done through the built-in Backup utility:
- Connect. SD-map OTG-phone-storage.
- Open Settings β Additional β Backup and Reset.
- Select Local Backup.
- Specify a path to save (e.g. /storage/1234-5678/MIUI/Backup).
- Click Backup and wait until it is completed.
Automatic local backup requires a third-party application, such as Automate or Tasker, to create a task that will run reservations on schedule.
Condition: "Time" (e.g. 3:00 a.m.)
Condition: "Charging connected" + "Wi-Fi enabled"
Action: "Run the application" β "Backup"
4 Action: "Copy Files" (from the /data/data/com.miui.backup folder to the SD- card)To back up on your PC, connect your phone over USB in File Transfer (MTP) mode and manually copy the MIUI/Backup folder to your hard drive. Or use the Mi PC Suite program, which supports automatic synchronization.
β οΈ Attention: Local backups are not encrypted by default. SD-a card or PC stored confidential data (for example, copies of SMS), Encrypt the archive with the help of 7-Zip or WinRAR with a password.
What if the local backup is not restored?
Common problems and solutions
Even with the right setup, auto-reservation on Xiaomi can malfunction. Letβs look at the typical errors and how to fix them:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Backup does not start automatically | Optimizing the battery for the Mi Cloud | Open Settings β Applications β Application Management β Mi Cloud β Battery β Without Limitations |
| The "Not enough space" error | overcrowded cloud or SD-map | Clean Old Backups in Mi Cloud β Storage management or formatting SD-map |
| Photos are not uploaded to Google Photos | Limitation of background activity | Allow autorun for Google Photos in Settings β Apps β Google Photos β Autorun |
| Backup is interrupted by 99% | Unstable Internet connection | Connect to another Wi-Fi network or use mobile traffic as a last resort |
If some data (such as notes or SMS) has disappeared from the backup after recovery, check:
- π Compatibility of the firmware version (backup with the MIUI 13 may not be fully recovered from MIUI 14).
- π Correctness of the entered password (if the backup is encrypted).
- π Backup file integrity (try to open it on PC through archiver).
To diagnose Mi Cloud problems, open Settings β Mi Cloud β Operations log. This shows all backup attempts and errors. If the problem is not resolved, contact Xiaomi via the official Mi Community website or forum.

Comparison of Auto-Reservation Methods: What to Choose?
Each of these methods has its pros and cons, and to determine which one is right for you, compare them by key parameters:
| Criteria | Mi Cloud | Google Drive | Local backup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free seat | 5GB | 15GB | Limited. SD-map/PC |
| Automation | β (flexible settings) | β (only photos and contacts) | β (requires third-party applications) |
| Recovery speed | Medium | Fast (for Google data) | Fastest one. |
| Security | Xiaomi encryption | Google Encryption | No (must be encrypted manually) |
| Cross-platformity | Only Xiaomi. | Any device. | Only your devices. |
The best option for most users is a combination of Mi Cloud for system data (SMS, call logs) and Google Drive for photos and contacts. Local backup should be used as an additional precaution before serious manipulations (firmware, reset).
If youβre switching between different brands (e.g. Xiaomi and Samsung), go for Google Drive. For those who only use Xiaomi phones, Mi Cloud is more convenient due to its deep integration with MIUI.
