The “The system has been destroyed” error on Xiaomi devices (Mi TVs, smartphones or tablets) is one of the most frightening problems for users, which occurs after a failed firmware update, power failure during flashing or tampering with system files. The device stops booting, displaying a black screen with red text errors, and standard reboot methods do not help.
Unlike typical crashes, this error indicates critical damage to the system partition where the files needed to run Android TV or MIUI are stored. However, in 90% of cases, the device can be restored without going to the service center — if you follow a clear algorithm. In this article, we will analyze all the working methods, from the simplest to the most advanced, taking into account the model of your device and the cause of the failure.
Why is there a problem with “The system has been destroyed”?
The error occurs due to damage to the system or boot-partitions where critical OS files are stored.
- 🔌 Interrupted firmware update – power outage, TV/smartphone getting stuck during installation OTA-update.
- 🔄 Incompatible firmware: An attempt to install a version of software that is not designed for your model (e.g., firmware for Mi). TV 4S on Mi TV 4A).
- 🛠️ Manual intervention – deleting system files through ADB, Incorrect root or modification of build.prop.
- 💽 Memory damage – wear of the flash drive (relevant for older Xiaomi models 2018-2020).
- 🦠 Viral software is rare, but some malicious applications can damage system partitions.
On Xiaomi TVs, the error most often appears after an automatic update via Wi-Fi, if during the process, the electricity was lost or the user forced to turn off the device. On smartphones, the fault usually becomes unofficial firmware (for example, custom MIUI or LineageOS) or a failure when unlocking the bootloader.
Method 1: Hard Reset (Hard Reset) through Recovery
If the device has any response to the buttons (lights up, vibrates), try resetting to factory settings, which will delete all data, but can return to work if only the user partition is damaged.
For Xiaomi TVs:
- Turn off the TV for 30 seconds.
- On the remote, hold Menu + Volume Down (or Home + Back for older models).
- Keep the buttons on, plug in the power. Hold on for 10-15 seconds until the Mi logo appears.
- In the Recovery menu, select Wipe Data/Factory Reset (control – volume buttons, confirmation – OK on the remote).
- After reset, select Reboot System Now.
For Xiaomi smartphones:
- Turn off the phone (press the Power + Volume Up for 10 seconds).
- Press the Power + Volume Up before the Mi logo appears.
- From the Recovery menu, select Wipe Data → Wipe All Data.
- Confirm the action and restart.
☑️ Preparation for discharge
⚠️ Note: On some Mi models TV (Like Mi. TV 4X 2020) Recovery may not work due to manufacturer lockdown. In this case, move to method 2.
Method 2: Fastboot Flashing (for smartphones)
If hard reset didn’t work and “The system has been destroyed” still burns on the screen, you’ll need a full Fastboot flashing, a technique only suitable for Xiaomi smartphones and tablets (Fastboot is not available on your TVs).
You'll need:
- 💻 Windows computer (or Linux/macOS fixed ADB).
- 🔌 USB-TypeC Cable (Original, Undamaged).
- 📥 Official firmware for your model (download from Xiaomi website).
- 🛠️ The Mi Flash Tool (download here).
Step-by-step:
- Unpack the firmware in a folder without Cyrillic characters (for example, C:\MiTV_Firmware\).
- Install the Mi Flash Tool and Xiaomi USB drivers.
- Turn off the phone, press Power + Volume Down to enter the Fastboot (a hare in a hat-eared hat will appear).
- Connect the device to a PC. In the Mi Flash Tool, press Refresh, you have to decide. COM-port.
- Select the firmware folder, select Clean All mode (full clean) and press Flash.
- Wait for the end (5-10 minutes). The phone will reboot automatically.
| Model of the device | Type of firmware | Download link | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 10 Pro | Fastboot (Global) | Download | Version V13.0.9.0.SKFMIXM |
| POCO X3 NFC | Fastboot (EEA) | Download | Suitable for European firmware |
| Mi 11 Lite | Fastboot (Stable) | Download | Requires unlocking of the loader |
⚠️ Note: If the Mi Flash Tool gives you a "Couldn't load device" error, check the drivers or try another one. USB-Windows 11 may require disabling driver signature verification.
💡
If the phone is stuck on the Mi logo after you have flashed it, wait 15-20 minutes. The first download after flashing it can take a long time.
Method 3: Restore Xiaomi TV via USB
For Mi. TV (model 4A, 4C, 4S, 4X, 5X etc.) the only reliable way is to run through the USB-You'll need a flash drive up to 8GB, formatted in FAT32.
Instructions:
- Download the firmware for your model from the official website (section TV Firmware).
- Unpack the archive and copy the update.zip file to the root of the flash drive (not to the folder!).
- Turn off the TV from the socket, insert the flash drive into the USB 2.0 port (usually located on the side).
- On the remote, pinch Menu + Volume Up and, without letting go, connect the power.
- Hold the buttons for 10-15 seconds until the update starts (progress bar appears).
- Do not turn off the TV until you fully restart (the process will take 5-10 minutes).
If the TV shows an error again after updating, repeat the procedure with another one. USB-port or flash drive (some Xiaomi models are picky to drives).
What to do if the TV can’t see the flash drive?
Method 4: Use EDL-The mode (for experienced users)
If none of these methods work, the Emergency Download Mode (EDL) is still available, allowing you to flash a device even if it is completely damaged, but requires special hardware or ADB commands.
Option 1: Through Testpoint (for smartphones)
On some Xiaomi models (e.g. Redmi 9A or POCO M3), you can log into EDL by closing contacts on the board.
- Remove the back cover of the phone (need a mediator and a hair dryer to soften the glue).
- Find a testpoint (usually signed by EDL or TEST next to the battery).
- Close the contacts with tweezers and connect the phone to a PC with QFil or Mi Flash Tool installed.
- Install firmware in Firehose mode (instructions are available on the 4PDA or XDA-Developers forums).
Option 2: Through ADB (if the device is determined)
If the phone is at least somehow responsive to the connection to the PC, try the command:
adb reboot edlAfter that, the device will go to EDL mode, and you can flash it through the Mi Flash Tool with the Clean All and Lock tick.
⚠️ Attention: Incorrect actions in EDL-The bootloader can be permanently blocked (especially on models with Qualcomm Snapdragon). 8xx If you are not sure, contact the service.
💡
EDL-The mode is the last chance to bring the device back to life, but it requires technical skills.
Method 5: Contact Xiaomi Service Center
If all attempts at self-recovery fail, the official service remains, and Xiaomi has authorized centers in most major cities where it can:
- 🔧 Re-sweeten damaged memory (if the error is caused by hardware failure).
- 📀 Sending the device through specialized equipment (for example, UFI Box or EasyJTAG).
- 🔄 Replace the motherboard (in extreme cases, if restoration is impossible).
The cost of repair depends on the model:
- For Mi TVs – from 3000 to 8000 rubles (including diagnostics).
- For smartphones – from 1,500 to 5 000 rubles (firmware through EDL is usually cheaper than replacing the board).
Before the service visit:
- Check if they have experience with the “The system has been destroyed” error (not all centers are used for such cases).
- Keep a check or proof of purchase (if the device is warranty, repairs may be free).
- Check if the data will be saved (usually during hardware repairs information is lost).
How to avoid mistakes in the future?
To avoid “The system has been destroyed” again, follow the simple rules:
- 🔋 Do not update your firmware when battery is low (less than 50% for smartphones) or when power is unstable (for TVs, use a UPS).
- 📶 Do not interrupt the upgrade process – even if it takes too long (sometimes installation takes up to 30 minutes).
- 🛡️ Do not install unofficial firmware without unlocking the bootloader (on Xiaomi, this blocks Anti-Rollback).
- 🔄 Create backups regularly via Mi Cloud or Google Drive (set up automatic backups).
- 🔍 Check firmware compatibility – download files only from official sources (Xiaomi or Xiaomi Firmware Updater).
Xiaomi TVs have introduced update crash protection since 2021: if the process is interrupted, the system will automatically roll back to the previous firmware version. However, this does not work on all models - check for the feature in the settings (Settings → About TV → Auto-Recovery).
