Why Xiaomi Redmi is not turned on after the update?
Did you update your Xiaomi Redmi firmware via Settings β About Phone β System Update, and after the reboot the screen remained black? Or did the device freeze on the MI logo and not respond to buttons? This problem occurs in owners of Redmi Note 10/11/12, Redmi 9/10 and even flagship POCO F models - due to failures in the installation process of the update, conflicts of MIUI versions or hardware limitations.
The reasons can be divided into two groups:
- π Software failures: interrupted update (battery is dead, Wi-Fi is off), damaged firmware files, conflict with custom recaveri (TWRP).
- π§ Hardware problems: Memory malfunction (eMMC), power controller failure, processor overheating during upgrade.
In 80 percent of cases, the problem is solved without going to the service center β just reset or reflash the phone manually, but if the screen does not show signs of life (no vibration, no charging indicator), it is a physical damage to the board β here only diagnostics in the workshop will help.
First steps: charging check and forced reboot
Before you start complex manipulations, make sure that the problem is not the banal discharge of the battery. Connect the phone to the original charger (preferably from Xiaomi with Quick Charge support) and wait 30 to 60 minutes.
- π Try another cable and power supply (ideal from a laptop with output) 5V/2A).
- π Connect your phone to your PC through USB β If the computer makes a connection sound, the battery is charged.
- π Hold the power button for 20-30 seconds to force reboot.
If the phone vibrates after charging, but the screen remains black, try the hard reset button combination:
- Press Power + Volume up for 10-15 seconds.
- Release the buttons when the MI logo or Fastboot menu appears.
- If the phone has been stuck on the logo for more than 5 minutes, go to the next section.
π‘
On the Redmi Note 12 and later, the combination may be different: try Power + Volume up + Volume down at the same time.
Enter Fastboot and Restore with Mi Flash Tool
If the phone is responsive to buttons but doesn't load beyond the logo, the firmware is likely damaged, and Fastboot flashing will help.
- π» Windows computer 10/11 (For the Mi Flash Tool).
- π Original. USB-cable (better from the set).
- π₯ Firmware for your model (download from the official Xiaomi website).
Firmware instructions:
- Turn off the phone (hold power for 10 seconds).
- Press Power + Volume down to enter the Fastboot (the image of a hare in a hat-eared will appear).
- Connect your phone to your PC, install Mi USB Driver drivers (download here).
- Open the Mi Flash Tool, select the downloaded firmware (.tgz format) and press Flash.
What if the Mi Flash Tool can't see the phone?
It takes 5-10 minutes, and when it's done, it automatically restarts. USB-The cable before the success label appears in the Mi Flash Tool!
βοΈ Preparation for firmware through Fastboot
Resetting through Recovery Mode: When the firmware doesn't help
If the phone boots to the Recovery menu but doesn't turn on normally, reset to factory settings, which will delete all data, but restore the device to work.
How to log in to Recovery:
- Turn off the phone (hold power for 10 seconds).
- Press Power + Volume up until the MI logo appears.
- Release the buttons when you see the menu with Reboot, Wipe Data, and more.
On the Recovery menu:
- π Choose Wipe Data β Wipe All Data (Reset).
- π Confirm the action (a password may be required if it has been set).
- π Go back to the main menu and select Reboot. β Reboot to System.
π‘
Recovery removes all data, including photos, contacts and apps, and if you have synced with Mi Account, some of the data can be restored after you log in.
If the phone is stuck on the logo again after the reset, the problem is deeper - perhaps the system memory (eMMC) is damaged. In this case, only flashing through Fastboot (see the previous section) or replacing the memory module in the service will help.
EMMC Problems: How to Recognize and What to Do
A common reason for Xiaomi Redmi to βbrickβ after an update is wear or damage to the eMMC memory. This is the chip where the firmware and user data are stored.
- π¨ The phone is switched on but constantly restarted (bootloop").
- π Fastboot displays an anti rollback or invalid partition error.
- π§ Mi Flash Tool is an error flash_write_failed or preloader_error.
Check the status of eMMC through the command in Fastboot:
fastboot getvar allIf the answer contains lines from emmc_health below 50%, Memory is worn out and needs replacement.
| Symptoms. | Probable cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The phone vibrates, but the screen is black. | Failure of firmware or display drivers | Fastboot flashing through Fastboot |
| Hanging on the MI logo | Boot section damaged | Reset via Recovery or firmware |
| The anti-rollback error in Fastboot | Reverse to the old version of MIUI | Switching the latest stable version |
| Mi Flash Tool doesn't see the phone | Lack of drivers or damaged USB-port | Install drivers manually, check the cable |
If the diagnosis confirmed the problem with eMMC, self-repair is impossible - you need to replace the chip in the service center. The cost of repair for the Redmi Note 10/11 is ~ 3-5 thousand rubles (2026).
π‘
On Redmi 9 and older, there is a frequent defect in eMMC 5.1, which manifests itself after 2-3 years of use. If the phone often overheated or discharged to zero, the risk of memory damage is higher.
What to do if nothing helps: contact the service
If all the methods described have failed, there are two options:
- Xiaomiβs official service β warranty repair (if the phone is younger) 12 months) or paid diagnostics. List of centres: mi.com/service.
- Unofficial workshops are cheaper, but the risk of using non-original spare parts.
Before the service visit:
- π Write it down. IMEI phone (on the box or under the battery, if removable).
- π Save Mi Account details (login and password) β they will be needed to unlock after repair.
- π° Check the cost of diagnosis β in some services it is free for further repairs.
Average repair prices (Moscow, 2026):
- π§ Replacement of eMMC: 3,000β5,000 β½.
- π Repair of the power controller: 2,500β4,000 β½.
- π Flip-through EDL (emergency mode: 1,500β2,500 β½.
π‘
If the phone is warranty, do not try to repair it yourself - this will void the warranty Xiaomi.
How to avoid problems with the following updates
To avoid βbrickingβ after the update, follow these rules:
- π Charge your phone at least 60% before upgrading.
For Redmi Note 12 and later, Xiaomi has implemented an Anti-Rollback mechanism that blocks rollbacks on older firmware versions. If you try to flash an older version of MIUI, the phone can turn into a brick. Always check for compatibility on the Xiaomi Firmware Updater site.
