When it comes to the firmware of Xiaomi smartphones, many users come across the terms “full firmware”, “fast-boot firmware” or “fast-boot firmware «OTA-You don't always know what the difference is, if your Redmi is yours, POCO Or Mi started to slow down, or it started to make mistakes, or it stopped turning on, so full firmware could be the solution?
In this article, we will explore how full firmware differs from regular air-to-air updates (OTAs) when it should be installed and when it should be done using standard methods. You will also learn where to download official firmware files for your Xiaomi model, how to verify their authenticity and avoid common installation errors. We will focus on the risks, from data loss to bricking up the device, and explain how to minimize them.
Important: the information in this article is relevant for all modern Xiaomi devices, including the Redmi Note series, POCO F/X, Mi 11/12/13 and others. If you are looking for firmware for an outdated model (for example, Mi A1 or Redmi 4X), please note that official support for them may be discontinued – we will also discuss this below.
What is Xiaomi’s full firmware and how it differs from OTA
Full firmware (aka Fastboot) ROM full ROM) — It is an archive of the entire operating system. MIUI, It's a device that's installed on your smartphone via Fastboot. OTA-Updates (which are downloaded and installed automatically via the settings menu), full firmware:
- 📦 It contains all system files, not just changes (delta-update).
- 🔄 It can even be installed on a “broken” device that doesn’t turn on or is stuck on the Mi logo.
- 🔧 Allows you to return the smartphone to the “factory” state, if the previous updates were errors.
- 🛡️ Often used to unlock the bootloader or recover from a failed custom software.
The key difference from OTA: OTA-Updates are installed on top of an existing system and require a working firmware. The full firmware rewrites all partitions of the device's memory, making it a universal tool for recovery.
Example: If your Redmi Note 10 Pro is updated via Settings → The phone. → System updates have started to constantly reboot, OTA-But if you put a full firmware in the Mi Flash Tool, it'll bring the device back to life.
When you need a full firmware: 5 real cases
Installing a full firmware is not a routine procedure, but rather an ambulance for a smartphone, and here are typical scenarios when it is needed:
- The device does not turn on or is stuck on the logo (bootloop), for example, after a failed update or reset settings.
- System errors that are not fixed by reset: constant crashes of applications, errors com.android.phone or miui.home.
- The switch from Chinese firmware to global (or vice versa) is true for devices purchased on AliExpress or in Chinese stores.
- Unlock the bootloader before installing custom software (e.g. LineageOS or Pixel Experience).
- Downgrade version of MIUI, if the new firmware is worse than the previous one (for example, after upgrading to MIUI 14, bugs appeared).
Important: Full firmware erases all data on the device, including photos, contacts and apps. If the smartphone is still turned on, back up via Settings → Additional → Backup and Reset.
⚠️ Note: If your device is warranty-free, installing full firmware may invalidate it. Before the procedure, check the warranty status in the Mi Community app or on the Xiaomi website.
What to do if the firmware does not fit the model?
Where to Download the Official Full Firmware for Xiaomi
Xiaomi’s official firmware is distributed through several sources, and we recommend using only verified channels to avoid viruses or modified files:
| Source | Reference | Pluses | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official Xiaomi website | new.c.mi.com | 100% original files, support for all models | Sometimes slow download, no archival versions |
| XDA Developers Forum | forum.xda-developers.com | Quick mirrors, discussions, instructions | Risk of running into unofficial assemblies |
| Telegram channels (e.g. MIUI Updates Tracker) | @MIUIUpdatesTracker | Notifications of new versions, direct links | There is no guarantee of relevance for all regions. |
| Mi Firmware Updater | mi-firmware-updater.github.io | Archive of old versions, convenient search | Not all files are verified by Xiaomi |
How do you choose the right firmware? Pay attention to:
- 📱 Device model (e.g. Redmi Note 12 Pro)+ 5G — It’s not the same as the Redmi Note 12 Pro. 5G).
- 🌍 Region: Global (global), China (Chinese), EEA (Europe), India (India).
- 🔢 Version MIUI (for example, MIUI 14.0.3.0).
- 📅 Type of build: Stable (stable) or Beta (test).
Example of the correct name of the firmware file:
fw_vayu_miui_VAYUGlobal_V14.0.3.0.TJUMIXM_3f4a123456_12.0.zipHere:
- Vayu is the code name for POCO X3 Pro.
- Global is the region.
- V14.0.3.0 is the MIUI version.
- 12.0 is the Android version.
💡
Before downloading, check the checksum (MD5) of the firmware file. It should match the one listed on the Xiaomi website. Use utilities like MD5 Checker (Android) or certutil-hashfile file.zip MD5 (Windows) to check.
Step-by-step: how to install full firmware on Xiaomi
The process of installing the full firmware consists of several steps: unlocking the bootloader (if required), preparing files and actually running the firmware through the Mi Flash Tool.
1. Unlocking the bootloader (Bootloader)
By default, the bootloader on Xiaomi devices is locked. To install the full firmware, you need to unlock it:
Link your Mi Account to your device (in Settings → Xiaomi Account)
Enable USB debugging (Settings → About Phone → MIUI Version → 7 times tap → Return to Additional → For Developers)
Connect the device to the PC and confirm the debugging permission
Download Mi Unlock Tool from Xiaomi
Run the utility and follow the instructions (it may take 7-15 days to unlock)
-->
⚠️ Important: Xiaomi has tightened unlocking rules since 2023, now some models require binding SIM-Cards to Mi Account for 30 days before unlocking.
2. Install firmware through Mi Flash Tool
After unlocking the loader:
- Download and install the Mi Flash Tool.
- Unpack the archive with firmware (.tgz or.zip) in a folder without Cyrillic characters.
- Turn off your smartphone and press Volume Down + Power to enter Fastboot mode.
- Connect the device to your PC and start the Mi Flash Tool.
- Click Select, specify the path to the firmware folder, then Refresh (the device should appear).
- Select firmware mode: Clean all - complete cleaning (recommended in case of failures); Clean all and lock - cleaning + lock bootloader; Save user data - data storage (does not always work stably).
Flash
Note: If the process is 99% frozen or an anti-rollback error occurs, you are trying to install an older version of MIUI than the one on the device before, in which case you need a special firmware with an anti-rollback fix.
💡
Use only official Xiaomi firmware tools. Alternative programs like the SP Flash Tool or QFil can damage your device if you don’t know the exact settings for your model.
Mistakes in Xiaomi firmware and how to avoid them
Even when following the instructions, users often encounter problems, and here are the most common mistakes and solutions:
| Mistake. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Couldn't find fastboot | Drivers not installed or device not recognized | Install ADB/Fastboot drivers and check USB connection |
| Flash is not done | Incompatible firmware or a corrupted file | Check it out. MD5-hash the file and download the firmware again |
| Anti-rollback check fail | MIUI Downgrade Attempt Without Workarounds | Look for firmware marked anti-rollback fixed on XDA |
| The device does not turn on after firmware | Incorrectly selected mode in Mi Flash Tool | Repeat the firmware with Clean All mode |
If the smartphone boots after firmware, but there are errors (for example, there is no IMEI or the network is not working), most likely, the firmware for another modification of the device was installed, in which case only re-running the correct version will help.
⚠️ Note: Some Xiaomi models (e.g. Redmi) K50 Xiaomi 12T) After firmware, you may need to configure the modem module via the engineering menu (#4636.
