You turned on a Xiaomi smartphone, and instead of the usual desktop, the screen flaunts a black background with a white penguin Tuks (a symbol of Linux) or the inscription fastboot mode? It is not a virus or a screen breakage - this is the emergency mode of the bootloader, which the device goes into when the software fails, most often the problem occurs after a failed update, manual intervention in system files or hardware failure.
In 90% of cases, a penguin on Xiaomi is a signal that the system cannot boot normally, ranging from harmless (like accidentally pressing buttons when you turn on) to critical (damaging partition /system). The good news is that in most scenarios, the device can be brought back to life without going to the service center.
Why Penguin Appears on Xiaomi: 7 Reasons Why It Is Important
The penguin (or fastboot mode) is not a bug, but a diagnostic tool that is activated when Android boots are not easy to use.
- π Interrupted update MIUI β if the firmware has downloaded but is not installed to the end (for example, due to a discharged battery or forced reboot).
- π οΈ Manual interference with system files β removing critical applications (e.g. com.miui.home), changing access rights through Magisk or ADB.
- π Deep battery discharge β if the phone is fully sat down and hasnβt charged for a few days, the power controller can reset the bootloader settings.
- π± Hardware failure β damage to flash memory (eMMC or UFS), oxidation of motherboard contacts after moisture.
- π§ Incompatible firmware β an attempt to install custom software (for example, LineageOS) without unlocking the bootloader.
- π― Accidental activation β simultaneous pressing of power buttons + Loudness down when switched on.
- π‘οΈ Lockdown MIUI β If the device was unlocked via Mi Unlock, but then the connection to another Mi Account occurred.
It's important to distinguish a penguin from other emergency modes, for example, if the screen has a red exclamation point or a No command sign, which is a recovery mode, and the exit methods will be different, and the penguin always appears on a black background with a white icon and the fastboot inscription at the bottom.
Method 1: Forced reboot (if the penguin appeared by accident)
The simplest method is a hard restart, which helps if the penguin is caused by a temporary failure or accidental button pressing.
- Press the Power button for 10-15 seconds until the screen goes out.
- Wait 30 seconds (donβt turn on your phone right away!)
- Press the Power button once for normal turn on.
If the penguin is gone after the reboot, the problem is solved. If not, move on to the next way. Importantly, don't confuse a hard reboot with a recovery entry (this requires clamping Power + Volume up).

On some models (such as the Xiaomi 12T or Redmi Note 11), the power button is combined with a fingerprint sensor. Press strictly in the center of the button to avoid false positives.
Method 2: Exit via Mi Assistant (Official Xiaomi Tool)
If the reboot didn't work, use the proprietary Mi Assistant (formerly MiFlash) utility, which allows you to restart your device to normal mode without losing data.
- Download Mi Assistant from Xiaomiβs official website (select the Windows version).
- Connect your phone to your PC via the original USB Type-C cable (importantly, donβt use cheap cables without data support!).
- Start Mi Assistant and wait until the program determines the device in fastboot mode.
- Press the Refresh button, then select the Reboot to System option.
If the phone boots normally after that, check the integrity of the system files: go to Settings β About Phone β Update MIUI and install the latest firmware version.

Method 3: Fastboot Recovery (without data loss)
If previous methods didnβt work, but the phone is still being determined by the computer, try restoring the bootloader via fastboot commands, which doesnβt erase user data, but requires installing ADB and Fastboot on the PC.
First, download Googleβs Platform Tools and unpack the archive to the root of the C:\ drive.
fastboot devices // Connection check (serial number should be displayed)
fastboot reboot // Attempting a normal reboot
Fastboot continue // Continue downloading (if the previous command failed)
Fastboot oem edl // Going to EDL (qualified users only!)If the phone boots after the fastboot continue command, but the penguin reappears the next time it turns on, there is a problem with the corrupted system files, in which case only flashing (see Method 4) will help.
Download Platform Tools|Install drivers for your Xiaomi model|Connect your phone to the original cable|Disable the antivirus (it can block fastboot commands)-->
Method 4: Flashing through the Mi Flash Tool (radical method)
If a penguin is coming from a damaged firmware, the only reliable way is to completely reinstall MIUI, which erases all the data on your phone, so only use it as a last resort.
- π₯οΈ Windows computer 7/10/11 (MacOS Mi Flash Tool is not stable).
- π₯ Official firmware for your model (download from Xiaomi website, choose Fastboot version).
- π Cable USB Type-C with data transfer support.
Firmware instructions:
- Unpack the firmware archive in a folder without Cyrillic characters (for example, C:\MIUI\).
- Install the Mi Flash Tool and run on behalf of the administrator.
- Connect your phone in fastboot mode (penguin on the screen).
- In the program, click Select, specify the path to the folder with the firmware.
- Select Clean All mode and press Flash.
- Wait for the process to end (10-15 minutes) and for the automatic reboot.
Warning: If the phone doesnβt turn on after firmware or freezes on the MI logo, repeat the process by selecting Clean all and lock mode (this will block the bootloader, but can help with hardware failures).
π‘
Flashing through the Mi Flash Tool removes all data, including photos and apps. If your phone had important files, try extracting them first through EDL mode (requires Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008).
Method 5: Diagnostics of hardware malfunctions
If none of the software methods worked, the problem may lie in the hardware.
| Malfunction | Signs. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Damaged flash memory (eMMC/UFS) | Phone not detected in fastboot, flashes red indicator | Replacement of memory chip (sweeter station required) |
| Oxidation of motherboard contacts | Penguin appears after getting moisture, the phone spontaneously reboots | Cleaning the board with ultrasound or isopropyl alcohol |
| Faulty power controller | Phone doesn't charge, penguin appears when connected to charging | Replacement of the controller or the entire power module |
| Battery problems | Penguin disappears after being connected to charging, but returns when disconnected | Battery replacement (especially for models over 2 years old) |
To diagnose hardware problems, connect your phone to your PC and check if it is defined in Device Manager as:
- Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 β damaged bootloader or memory.
- MediaTek Preloader - firmware problems on MediaTek chipsets.
- Unknown device - possible problems with USB-plume.
π‘
If the phone is not detected in any mode, try to warm the motherboard with a hairdryer (temperature 150-200 Β° C) for 2-3 minutes, this will temporarily restore contacts and help diagnose the problem.
What to do if a penguin appears on the Xiaomi screen
Some actions may make things worse or cause a complete loss of data.
β οΈ Warning: Never remove the battery by force (for example, disassembling the phone). on modern Xiaomi, the battery is soldered to the board, and turning it off without special equipment can damage the power controller.
- β Install unofficial firmware (e.g. Pixel Experience or Havoc) OS) without unlocking the bootloader, this will result in a complete locking of the device (brick).
- β Use programs like this. SP Flash Tool or Odin β These are designed for other brands and can permanently damage the firmware.
β οΈ Warning: If you see this device is locked or Mi Account on the screen, donβt try to flash your phone without unlocking it first, which will cause Anti-Rollback to be activated and you will lose all your work capacity.
