When your beloved Xiaomi stops responding to clicks, hangs on a logo or shows off a black screen, it stuporizes even experienced users, which is technically called a βbrick state,β meaning that the smartphoneβs software is so damaged that the device canβt boot the Android operating system. However, itβs early to panic: in most cases, you can bring the gadget back to life on your own, without going to the service center.
Before you start complex manipulations, you need to understand the cause of the failure. Most often, the "bricking" occurs after a failed firmware update, interrupted flashing process or installing incompatible modifications. If your device just turned off and doesn't turn on, maybe the problem lies in a deep battery discharge or hardware failure. But if the screen lights up and shows the Mi or Redmi logo, and then nothing happens, this is a software failure that we will fix.
It's important to distinguish between the levels of "death" of a gadget. There's a "soft brick" when the Recovery or Fastboot menus are still available, and a "hard one" when the device only reacts to charging or emits vibration without an image. There are different methods of resuscitation for each level. Below we'll look at all the available methods, from simple reboots to complete reflashing through the computer.
Diagnosis of the condition: mild or severe failure
The first step is always to make an accurate diagnosis. Don't rush to disassemble the case or carry the phone to the master until you check the device's response to external commands. Connect the smartphone to the computer through the computer. USB-If the computer makes a characteristic sound of the new device's connection, then the power controller and motherboard are functioning, and the problem lies solely in the software part.
Try to pinch the key combination to enter special modes. For most Xiaomi and Redmi models, it's a combination of power and volume. If the screen lights up and you see the Fastboot logo (a hare repairing an android) or the Recovery menu (a black screen with menus in several languages), then you're in luck. It's a soft brick, which will be restored quickly and painlessly.
β οΈ Note: If the device is identified as "Unknown Device" or "QDLoader 9008" when connected to a PC, and the screen remains black, this may indicate a bootloader failure or hardware problems. In 9008 mode, an authorized Mi Account is often required for firmware.
The table below gives the main symptoms and their probable causes, which will help you choose the right strategy of action:
| Symptoms. | Reaction to buttons | Probable cause | Difficulty of repair | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Eternal Logo (Bootloop) | Vibration, screen glows | Update error, software conflict | Low. | |
| Black screen, charging is working | No reaction. | System failure, battery discharge | Medium | Display damage |
| Fastboot mode (Hare) | It's on itself or manually. | Accidental press, loader failure | Low. | |
| EDL mode (9008) | Just vibration or nothing. | Critical loader failure | Tall. |
Understanding the current state of the device is critical. If you see the Recovery menu, it means the recovery partition is intact, and you can try resetting or flashing it directly from it. If the phone immediately hits the Fastboot, it's likely that the main partition is damaged, but the bootloader is intact. Worst of all, if nothing works, then you'll have to use deep firmware mode.
Basic methods: reboot and reset in Recovery
If your device is still responsive to the buttons, start with the least risky methods. Often the problem is solved by a banal reboot or cleaning the cache. Press the power button and hold it for 10-15 seconds. If you're lucky, the phone vibrates and reboots. If that doesn't work, move to the recovery menu.
To log into Recovery Mode on a phone that is off, press both the power button and the Volume Up button. Hold them until the logo appears. The menu uses volume buttons and the power button to navigate, and you need Wipe Data. Note: this step will delete all user data.
- π Select Wipe Data, then Wipe All Data for a full reset.
- π After the procedure is completed, select Reboot -> Reboot to System.
- π Make sure that the battery is at least 40% before the operation.
Data resets often help if the freeze is caused by a system file conflict or overcrowded memory, but if the phone goes back into a reboot cycle or shows an error, the firmware file itself is damaged, and you can't do that by cleaning it up, you'll need to reinstall the operating system completely.
βοΈ Preparing for resetting in Recovery
Use Fastboot Mode and Mi Flash Tool
When Recovery doesn't help or isn't available, Fastboot comes to the rescue. It's a low-level interface that lets you interact with your phone directly, bypassing the operating system. You'll need a Windows computer to work, the original Windows computer. USB-cable and utility Mi Flash Tool. you also need to download the official firmware for your model.
Download firmware from miui.com or xiaomifirmwareupdater.com. It is important to choose the version for your device (codename, for example, cepheus or raphael). The file must have the extension.zip. Unpack the archive to the root of the C disk so that the path is short, for example: C:\xiaomi_rom\. Extract the contents of the archive until you see files with the.img and.bat extensions.
Transfer your phone to Fastboot (Volume Down) + Connect it to a PC. In Device Manager, it should be defined as Android Bootloader Interface. Launch Mi Flash Tool on behalf of the administrator. Press Refresh, select the path to the firmware folder and press Flash.
β οΈ Warning: When you run through the Mi Flash Tool, select Clean All mode. Save user data may not work if the partition structure changes, leading to a new error cycle.
The firmware process takes 200 to 500 seconds. Don't turn off the cable or touch the phone at this time. Once complete, the phone will automatically restart. The first run can take up to 10 minutes -- that's normal for a new system.
