Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite is one of the most popular mid-range smartphones from the Chinese brand, released in 2019. Despite its age, the device is still actively used thanks to powerful hardware and regular firmware updates. However, with the release of MIUI 13, owners have questions: will their model get a new version of the shell, and if so, when?
In this article, we will analyze Xiaomiβs official statements, analyze the update history for the Mi 9 Lite (codename pyxis), and also tell you how to check for an update manually and what to do if the update is delayed. MIUI 13 β from custom firmware to the transition to HyperOS.
Spoiler: Mi 9 Lite is ambiguous, on the one hand, the device is not officially included in the list of supported for MIUI 13, on the other hand, some users have already received an update through regional channels, and then more details.
MIUI 13 Official Status for Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite: What Xiaomi Says
Xiaomi traditionally publishes lists of devices that will receive new versions of MIUI, even before the release. For MIUI 13, this list was made public in December 2021 - and the Mi 9 Lite was not included in it. This is logical: at the time of the announcement, the smartphone is already 2.5 years old, and Xiaomi usually supports mid-range devices with updates for 2-3 years.
But there are nuances:
- π Regional differences: In some countries (e.g. India or Europe), updates may come later or earlier due to localization.
- π Xiaomi: The brand sometimes βgets out of stockβ old models for updates, if they remain popular (as it was with the Redmi Note 7 and the Redmi Note). MIUI 12.5).
- π± Alternative channels: The update could have come through beta testing or closed programs (e.g. Mi Pilot).
According to XiaomiUI, which tracks firmware releases, the Mi 9 Lite last received an official update under MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition (V12.5.7.0.RFCEUXM for global firmware), which was in early 2022. Since then, no new updates have been received.
β οΈ Note: If you see information about the exit MIUI 13 for Mi 9 Lite on obscure forums or social media β check the source. Often, such news is fake or related to custom firmware.
Why Mi 9 Lite may not get MIUI 13: Technical Limitations
Even if Xiaomi wants to release MIUI 13 for the Mi 9 Lite, there are some reasons why it wonβt happen:
- Hardware limitations: The smartphone is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chipset, which does not support some features of MIUI 13, for example, improved animation based on MIUI Dynamic Effects or optimization for Android 12 (and the Mi 9 Lite runs on Android 10 with a shell).
- Memory Lack: The device has just 6GB of RAM in the top version, and MIUI 13 requires more resources to work with new features such as Memory Extension.
- Android support closure: Mi 9 Lite has not received an update to Android 11, and MIUI 13 is based on newer versions of the OS.
For comparison, even the Xiaomi Mi 9 (the flagship of 2019) received MIUI 13 only in a stripped-down version without some features, and the Mi 9 Lite, as a βjuniorβ model, has even less chance.
| Xiaomi model | The latest version of MIUI | Support for MIUI 13 | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mi 9 Lite (pyxis) | MIUI 12.5 Enhanced | β No. | Not officially supported |
| Mi 9 (cepheus) | MIUI 13 (stripped) | β Yes. | No part of the function. |
| Redmi Note 8 Pro (begonia) | MIUI 12.5 | β No. | A similar situation |
| POCO X3 NFC (surya) | MIUI 13 | β Yes. | Support to 2026 |
How to check the update MIUI 13 manually: Step-by-step instructions
If you're hoping for a miracle, you can try to force-check the update.
Connect to stable Wi-Fi network| Charge your smartphone at least 50% | Go to Settings β About Phone β System Update |Tap three dots in the upper right corner and select Download the latest version |Wait 5-10 minutes (the server can respond for a long time)

- Connect to Mi Community and check if the beta tester program is open for your model.
β οΈ Note: Do not download firmware from third-party sites under the guise of MIUI 13 for Mi 9 Lite. There is a high risk of running into viruses or "brick" devices. Official files are always signed by Xiaomi and distributed through the OTA Or Mi Flash Tool.
How to get MIUI 13 on Mi 9 Lite
If no official update is foreseen, there are three options:
1. MIUI-based firmware for the MIUI 13
The development community is building unofficial MIUI 13 ports for unsupported devices.
- π οΈ MIUI 13 by Xiaomi.eu: Modified firmware with remote bloatware and advanced settings.
- π§ MIUI Mix: Hybrid build with elements MIUI 13 and MIUI 14.
- π± Pixel Experience: firmware on pure Android with features from Google Pixel, but without the shell Xiaomi.
The installation will require:
- Unlock the bootloader through the official Xiaomi tool.
- Install a custom recap (TWRP)
- Sweep ZIP-firmware TWRP.

2.Switch to HyperOS (formerly MIUI 14+)
Xiaomi is gradually replacing MIUI with a new shell, HyperOS. It is lighter, faster and supports older devices longer. For the Mi 9 Lite, there are already beta versions of HyperOS that can be installed through Xiaomi Community or third-party resources.
The advantages of HyperOS over MIUI 13:
- β‘ Greater optimization for weak devices.
- π Improved security and privacy.
- π¨ New design without unnecessary animations.
Update via Mi Flash Tool (for power users)
If you find an official MIUI 13 Fastboot file for another model on the same chipset (e.g., the Mi CC9 is the twin of the Mi 9 Lite for the Chinese market), you can try flashing it through the Mi Flash Tool.
- π¨ Hard brick (complete failure) is possible).
- π΅ Mobile network or Wi-Fi may not work.
- π Fast battery discharge due to unoptimized software.
π‘
Before you run the firmware, backup the persist partition via TWRP to help restore IMEI and communication module data if something goes wrong.
What to do if the update never came: Optimizing the current firmware
If MIUI 13 never comes out for the Mi 9 Lite, you can improve the performance of the current version of MIUI 12.5.
- π§Ή Cleaning the system: Use the built-in Security app β Cleaning to remove cache and debris.
- π Battery Optimization: Turn off background activity of unnecessary apps in Settings β Battery β Optimization.
- π― Turn off animations: Turn on Developer Mode (7 times click on Version) MIUI in βAbout Phoneβ), then in the Developer Settings, install Windows Animation = 0.5x.
- π Reset to factory settings: Radical-method, but helps eliminate brakes (don't forget to make a backup!).
Itβs also worth installing an alternative launcher, such as Nova Launcher or Lawnchair, to simulate the MIUI 13 interface.
π‘
Even without MIUI 13, you can significantly speed up the Mi 9 Lite by disabling unnecessary Xiaomi services (such as msa, analytics) through ADB or apps like App Ops.
MIUI 12.5 vs. MIUI 13: What you're losing without an update
To see if MIUI 13 is worth chasing, compare the key differences to MIUI 12.5:
| Function | MIUI 12.5 | MIUI 13 | Important for the Mi 9 Lite? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Productivity | Optimization for Android 10 | Support for Android 12+, Memory Extension | β No (iron won't pull) |
| Design | Classic MIUI | New Icons, Animations, MIUI Dynamic Effects | β Yes (visual improvements) |
| Security | Monthly patches through 2022 | Patches to 2026, improved sandbox | β Yes (relevant vulnerability fixes) |
| Camera. | Standard algorithms | Improved photo processing, AI Cinema | β οΈ Partially (depends on firmware) |
| Autonomy | Basic optimization | Smart Balance, Adaptive Consumption | β Yes (especially for weak batteries) |
Important: The Mi 9 Lite, of all the new MIUI 13, only really benefits from improved security and design. Features like Memory Extension or AI Cinema won't work due to hardware limitations.
Will the Mi 9 Lite HyperOS or MIUI 14 get a new version?
With the release of HyperOS (replacement of MIUI starting in 2026), owners of the Mi 9 Lite have a chance to get a new software.
- π HyperOS will be ported to devices that are not available MIUI 13, but have sufficient technical characteristics.
- π§ Mi 9 Lite falls into the βgray zoneβ: its Snapdragon 710 chipset supports Android 12, but Xiaomi may not waste resources on adaptation.
- π The first beta versions of HyperOS for older devices will begin in the second half of 2026.
