Upgrading to Android 11 for Xiaomi smartphones has been one of the most anticipated events for owners of the brandβs devices. Despite the fact that the new version of the OS was released in 2020, many models received it with a delay β or did not receive it at all. If your smartphone doesnβt receive an update via OTA, try installing it manually via MIUI Recovery or Fastboot. To do this, download the firmware from the official Xiaomi website and follow the instructions in the βHow to update manuallyβ section.
Why some Xiaomi models wonβt get Android 11?
While Xiaomi is expanding its list of supported devices, some models will never get Android 11, due to several factors:
- Hardware Restrictions β Older processors (such as the Snapdragon 6xx or Helio Pxx) may not support new OS features.
- Xiaomi only guarantees 2 major updates for most models (except flagships).
- Memory Lack β Budget smartphones with 32-64 GB of memory often donβt get upgrades due to the risk of space shortage.
- Regional restrictions β some models (e.g. for the Chinese market) may receive updates later or not at all.
Among the most famous models that didnβt get Android 11 despite the expectations of users:
- π« Redmi Note 8 Pro β stayed on Android 10 despite promises.
- π« POCO F1 β The latest update to Android 10.
- π« Redmi Note 7 and Note 7 Pro: Support ends in 2020.
- π« Mi A3 (Android One β got Android 11, but with serious bugs, which caused the update to roll back.
β οΈ Note: If your smartphone has not received an official update, it is not recommended to install custom firmware (for example, LineageOS) without experience. This can lead to loss of warranty, unstable operation or even a "brick" of the device.

- Check the official MIUI website, where the lists of supported devices are published.
- Visit thematic forums, such as 4PDA or XDA Developers, where users share information about the release of firmware.
- Make sure your model is not Chinese version (e.g. Mi 10 China) as they are released separately.

How to upgrade Xiaomi to Android 11 manually?
If the automatic update doesn't work, you can install Android 11 yourself. There are two official ways to do this: Recovery and Fastboot. We recommend the first method, as it's easier and safer.
Important: Before updating, make a backup of the data, as if the device is mistaken, it can be reset to factory settings.
Method 1: Update through Recovery
- Download stable firmware for your model from the official website (choose the version marked "Stable").
- Rename the file to update.zip and move it to the root folder of internal memory.
- Press the Volume Up + Power buttons to enter Recovery Mode.
- Select Install update.zip and confirm the installation.
- Once completed, restart the device.
Method 2: Update via Fastboot (for power users)
This method is more complicated and requires a computer with ADB and Fastboot drivers installed. If you have never worked with these tools, you should consult the first method or a specialist.

fastboot rebootβ οΈ Warning: Misuse of the Fastboot can cause your device to break down. If you are not sure about your actions, do not take risks - contact the service center.

Updating with Recovery is safer than Fastboot, but requires the right firmware. Never install firmware from another model, which will cause your smartphone to fail.
What to do if your Xiaomi doesnβt support Android 11?
If your model is not on the supported list, you have a few options:
- π Stay on the current version β Android 10 or MIUI 12 still getting security updates.
- π± Buy a new smartphone β if you are critically important new features, consider Xiaomi 12 or Redmi Note 11 models.
- π οΈ Install custom firmware β for example, LineageOS 18.1 (based on Android 11), but it is risky.
- βοΈ Use alternative launchers β some Android 11 features (such as notification bubbles) can be simulated using third-party apps.
If you decide on custom firmware, consider the following risks:
- π¨ Loss of guarantee.
- π Battery problems (quick discharge).
- πΆ Unstable operation of mobile network or Wi-Fi.
- π Security vulnerabilities (if the firmware is not updated).
The 4PDA and XDA forums have detailed instructions on how to install custom firmware for most Xiaomi models, but before you do that, be sure to unlock the bootloader through the official Mi Unlock tool (this can take up to 720 hours to wait!).
