What is a BIOS on a smartphone and why you need it
When it comes to the BIOS on the Xiaomi Redmi phone, most users imagine a blue-screen menu from desktops. However, in mobile devices, the BIOS is analogous to the special boot modes: Fastboot and EDL (Emergency Download Mode), these tools allow you to perform operations that are not available in normal operation mode, from firmware to restore bricks.
Unlike computers where the BIOS is responsible for initializing iron, the Redmi Note 10/11/12 or POCO X3/X4 share similar functions among:
- πΉ Fastboot - a mode for firmware through PC (available on all models)
- πΉ EDL β Emergency mode for recovery (requires authorization on new Qualcomm chips)
- πΉ Recovery β Recovery menu (not to be confused with Recovery menu) BIOS!)
Important:
loader modes
Why would you want to use Xiaomi Redmi?
- π± Installation of custom firmware (LineageOS, Pixel Experience)
- π§ Unlocking the loader before the firmware
- π οΈ Recovery after a failed update ("brick")
- π Resetting password/pattern lock (in some cases)
Phone Preparation: What to Do Before Entry
Before trying to log into Fastboot or EDL, follow the mandatory preparatory steps: On Xiaomi models with a Snapdragon chip (Redmi Note 10 Pro, POCO F3), entering the EDL without authorization will lead to the blocking of IMEI! This is critical: after 2021, Qualcomm has tightened its security policy.
Preparation checklist:
βοΈ Preparation for entry into BIOS Xiaomi
For models on MediaTek (Redmi 9A, Redmi 10C), the process is simpler β EDL does not require authorization, but it is still risky to intervene without experience.
- Link the device to your Mi Account in Settings β Xiaomi Account
- Enable OEM Unlock in Settings β For developers
- Wait 7-15 days (on new models) after linking your account
β οΈ Note: Redmi Note 12 and newer attempt to enter EDL Without an authorized developer account, you will lock your device completely. Use only official unlock methods through the Mi Unlock Tool.
Method 1: Log in to Fastboot via hardware buttons
The most versatile method, which works on all Xiaomi Redmi models (including the Redmi 7/8/9/10/11/12 series and POCO), is suitable even if the phone does not turn on or hovers on the logo.
- Turn off the phone (if it freezes, press the power button for 10-15 seconds)
- Hold the combination: π Power button + Volume reduction (for 99% model) π On the Redmi. 6/6A and old models: Nutrition + Volume up.

If the screen remains black:
- π Check the battery (minimum 20% required to enter)
- π Connect the charger and try again.
- π οΈ On some models (Redmi) K40) Hold the buttons until the vibration, not until the logo appears.
π‘
If the phone doesnβt respond to buttons, try holding the combination for 15-20 seconds β sometimes it works on βhangβ devices.
Method 2: Sign in via ADB (for power users)
It requires a developer mode on and a PC connection, and it works if the phone is on, but you need to quickly switch to Fastboot without rebooting.
- Enable USB Debugging in Settings β For Developers
- Connect your phone to your PC via the original cable
- Open the command line (Windows) or terminal (Linux/Mac) and type: adb devices Make sure the device is identified (its serial number should appear).
- Run the command to go to Fastboot: adb reboot bootloader
If you have a device unauthorized error:
- π± The phone will be asked for debugging permission - confirm it
- π Reconnect the cable (sometimes a change helps) USB-port)
- π₯οΈ Install the drivers. ADB Interface via Mi PC Suite
β οΈ Attention: Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G In addition to other HyperOS models, the adb reboot bootloader may not work due to limitations. MIUI. In this case, use hardware buttons (Method 1).
Method 3: Entry into EDL (Emergency Mode)
EDL (9008) is the βlast hopeβ for Xiaomi Redmi recovery when other methods donβt work. Dangerous for beginners! Qualcomm Snapdragon chips (most flagships and mid-budget models) require authorization, otherwise you risk losing IMEI.
How to get in:
- π For Snapdragon: Close the testpoints on the board (disassembly required) or use the command: adb reboot edl Only works on an unlocked bootloader!
- π§ For MediaTek: Squeeze the power + Increase the volume on the phone turned off 10-15 Seconds (on some models you need to connect the cable to the PC)
Signs of successful entry:
- π₯οΈ In the Device Manager will appear Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008
- π΅ The phone screen will remain black (but the phone will be determined by the PC)
| Xiaomi model | Chipset | EDL entry method | Do you need authorization? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 10 Pro | Snapdragon 732G | Testpoints or ADB | Yes. |
| POCO X3 Pro | Snapdragon 860 | Testpoints | Yes. |
| Redmi 9A | MediaTek Helio G25 | Buttons + cable | No. |
| Redmi K50 | Snapdragon 870 | Only testpoints. | Yes. |
What happens if you sign in to EDL without Snapdragon authorization?
What to do if you canβt get into the BIOS
If none of the methods worked, check the following points:
- π Battery discharge: Connect charging to 15-20 minutes, even if the phone does not respond
- π Cable/Port Problems: Try Another USB-cable (preferably original) and port USB 2.0 on PC
- π§ Damaged bootloader: If the phone has been previously flashed, it may be damaged by the aboot or lk partition
- π οΈ Hardware malfunction: The Redmi Note 8 Pro and other models with MediaTek often fails the power controller
For diagnosis, connect the phone to the PC and check:
- Is the device defined in Device Manager (even as "Unidentified")
- Is there a sound of USB connection/disconnection?
- Does the phone warm up when connecting charging?
β οΈ Note: If after unsuccessful attempts, the Fastboot phone login stopped turning on at all (black screen, no vibration), this may indicate damage to the boot partition. EDL authorization.

On Xiaomi HyperOS models (2026), standard Fastboot login methods may not work due to a modified bootloader, in which case use Power + Volume + Volume Reduction (hold 10 seconds).
How to avoid turning your phone into a brick
Fastboot and EDL are always risky, even experienced users sometimes run into problems.
- π Do not flash unofficial files without checking their compatibility with your model (for example, the firmware from Redmi Note 10 is not suitable for the Redmi Note 10 Pro)
- π Do not interrupt the firmware or unlock process β this is a guaranteed way to get a brick"
- π‘ Check it out. IMEI after-work EDL (dial *#06#)
- π§ Use only official tools: Mi Flash Tool, Mi Unlock Tool, XiaomiTool V2
If you are a beginner, start with the safest operations:
- Unlock the bootloader via Mi Unlock Tool (official method)
- Installation of TWRP only after successful unlocking
- Firmware via Fastboot with data storage (option) clean_all Mi Flash erases everything!)
For models with HyperOS (2026), there are additional restrictions:
- π Unlocking the bootloader now requires a 30-day wait (instead of 7 days)
- π± Certain functions ADB Deactivated by default (must be manually enabled)
- π§ Custom RecavΓ©rie firmware (TWRP) This can lead to anti-rollback blocking.
