Why users are returning to older versions of MIUI and when it is justified
Firmware updates on Xiaomi smartphones often bring new features, security fixes and performance optimization. However, the latest version of MIUI is not always stable: users face increased battery consumption, overheating, bugs in the interface or incompatibility with applications.
But bringing back old firmware to Xiaomi is harder than upgrading. The manufacturer blocks the ability to simply roll back through the standard update menu to avoid fragmentation of versions. This means that a downgrade will require unlocking the bootloader, using a Fastboot or Recovery, and sometimes rooting the device. There are risks: if you do not do it correctly, the smartphone can turn into a βbrickβ.
In this article, we will discuss three official and two informal ways of rollback, discuss in detail the preparation, choosing the right version of firmware and solving typical errors, and explain in which cases a downgrade is impossible without data loss.
Preparation for Downgrade: What to Do Before the Firmware Rollback
Before you start rolling back, make sure you follow all the critical steps.Neglecting at least one point can cause data loss or locking the device.
- π± Create a full backup through Settings β The phone. β Backup or by using Mi PC Suite.Mi Cloud does not save some system settings.
- π Charge the battery to at least 60%. When discharged during firmware, the device may fail.
- π Check the model and code name of your Xiaomi. β The phone. β Version. MIUI (Click on "Core" several times. For example, the Redmi Note 10 Pro has the codename sweet.
- π Unlock the bootloader (if it is locked). Without it, most downgrade methods won't work.
Pay special attention to the choice of firmware version. Not all older builds are compatible with the current version of MIUI. For example, if your smartphone was updated via OTA, a rollback to a version older than 2-3 months can cause an anti-rollback error.

β οΈ Note: If your device was purchased in China (China version) ROM), rollback ROM Without prior unlocking the bootloader will lead to blocking Mi Account. Access will be restored only through the official Xiaomi service.
Method 1: Recoil via Fastboot (official method for unlocked bootloader)
This is a good way to use most Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO models if the bootloader is already unlocked, and it involves using the Mi Flash Tool utility and firmware in.tgz or.zip format for Fastboot.
Step-by-step:
- Download the official firmware for your model (select the Fastboot version).
- Unpack the archive in a folder without Cyrillic characters (for example, C:\MIUI\fastboot_rom).
- Install Xiaomi and Mi Flash Tool drivers.
- Turn off the phone and press Volume Down + Power to enter Fastboot mode.
- Connect your smartphone to your PC, open the Mi Flash Tool, select a firmware folder and press Refresh (the device must be determined).
- At the bottom, choose Clean all (full cleaning) or Clean all and lock (clean + lock the bootloader after firmware).
- Press Flash and wait until it is completed (usually 5-10 minutes).
After the reboot, the device will be reset to factory settings. All data will be deleted, so pre-backup is mandatory.
What if the Mi Flash Tool canβt see the device?
| Xiaomi model | Supported downgrade | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 10/Pro/Pro Max (mojito/sweet) | Yeah, until MIUI 12.5. | Requires unlocking the bootloader. Versions older than 13.0 can block rollback. |
| POCO F3 (alioth) | Yes, until MIUI 12.5.3. | If you roll back from MIUI 13+, you may have an anti-rollback error. |
| Xiaomi Mi 11 (venus) | Limited (up to MIUI 12.5.7) | On new batches of devices, the downgrade is blocked hardware. |
| Redmi 9/9A/9C (lancelot/angelica) | Yes, no restrictions. | Firmware for these models rarely contain rollback protection. |
Method 2: Recovery (without data loss but with limitations)
If the bootloader is blocked, but you want to return to the previous version MIUI Without a complete reset, you can try to sew OTA-This method only works if it's a recovery package:
- π² You are going to go back to a version that was installed earlier (for example, with a MIUI 14 on MIUI 13.0.5).
- π The firmware has the same base (e.g. rollback from Global to Global, not China).
- π‘οΈ There is no hardware anti-rollback protection on the device (relevant for 2022 models)+ year-end).
Instructions:
- Download the full OTA-The package (not incremental!) for your model from the Xiaomi Firmware Updater website.
- Rename the file to update.zip and place it in the root of internal memory.
- Turn off the phone and press Volume Up + Power to enter Recovery.
- Select Install update.zip to System (on some devices, the item may be called differently).
- Confirm the installation and wait for completion.
β οΈ Note: If after the firmware through Recovery phone is stuck on the logo MI For more than 10 minutes, force it to turn off (press the power for 15 seconds) and try to log in to Fastboot.
Through Fastboot.|Through Recovery.|Through OTA-update|Never sewed it up myself.-->
Method 3: Using ADB Sideload (for power users)
ADB Sideload allows you to flash the firmware through Recovery, but transfer the file directly from the computer.
- π± The device is not defined in Fastboot, but it works in Recovery.
- π§ You need to re-cover the custom (for example, TWRP) downgrad.
- π¦ The firmware weighs more than 2 GB (does not fit into internal memory).
This method will require:
- Installed ADB and Fastboot tools.
- The firmware is in.zip format (not unpacked!).
- USB Debugging enabled (Settings β About Phone β MIUI Version β 7 times press on MIUI Version β return to Additional β For Developers β Debugging by USB).
Firmware commands:
adb devices
adb sideload path to firmware.zipIt can take up to 15 minutes. Don't turn it off. USB-cable and do not interrupt the data transmission.
π‘
If ADB Sideload gives you a device not found error, try reinstalling Google drivers USB Driver or use another driver USB-Also check if debugging is on. USB developer-setting.
Downgrade Risks: What Could Go Wrong and How to Avoid It
Firmware rollback is not a safe procedure, and even if you follow all the instructions, there are risks:
- 𧱠Soft-brick (device is turned on but not loaded beyond the logo) is most often solved by re-running through Fastboot.
- π Hard-brick (complete lock of the device, does not respond to buttons) requires flashing through EDL-Mode (requires an authorized Xiaomi account).
- π΅ Loss of loss IMEI (In some models, the network disappears after a downgrade. Restored through an engineering menu or modem partition firmware.
- π Anti-rollback error (if you try to flash an older version) can only be fixed by upgrading to a newer firmware.
The most common bug is that the firmware is not compatible with the hardware version of the device, for example, if you downloaded firmware for the Redmi Note 10 Pro (sweet), and you actually have a Redmi Note 10 Pro 5G (camellian), the firmware will not stand up and the device will lock.
To minimize the risks:
- Always check the code name of the model.
- Do not use firmware from third-party sources (only official or verified custom builds).
- Before downgrad, turn off Find My Device and Mi Account in the settings.
π‘
If the phone doesnβt turn on after a downgrade, donβt panic: 90% of the time it can be restored via Fastboot or EDL. The main thing is not to try to stitch random files and follow the instructions for your model.
What to do after a successful downgrade: setup and optimization
After rolling back to the old MIUI firmware, you will need to follow several steps to ensure that the device works stably:
- π Reset the settings to factory (if you didn't do it during firmware) and remove any conflicts between the old and new versions of the system.
- π Turn off automatic updates in Settings β The phone. β Updating the system β Three points. β Settings β Auto-update.
- π² Restore data from backup, but do not restore system applications (this can cause errors).
- π‘οΈ Check the basic functions: camera, network, sensors. If something is not working, you may need to flash individual sections (modem, vendor).
If you have retraced MIUI 12.5 or older, please note:
- π Battery Consumption: Older versions can be discharged faster due to unoptimized background processes.
- π Security: Lack of latest patches makes the device vulnerable to exploits.
- π± Application compatibility: Some applications (e.g. banking) may require a new version of Android.
If there are bugs after a downgrade (for example, NFC or Wi-Fi does not work), try:
- Swipe the vendor section from a newer firmware (via Fastboot).
- Install Magisk and modules to fix specific problems.
- Return to the version of MIUI that was not a problem (possibly an intermediate one).
