Owners of Xiaomi and Redmi smartphones often face a situation where, after a system update or accidental reset, the usual visual style disappears. The interface returns to the standard look, depriving the user of personalized icons, fonts and wallpaper that created a unique atmosphere. Returning the theme is not just a matter of aesthetics, but also a way to restore the usual logic of working with the device.
The process of restoring the design can range from simple re-use in settings to more complex manipulation of system files. In most cases, the problem lies in conflicting versions of the MIUI Themes application or caching errors. Understanding the mechanisms of the HyperOS shell or MIUI will help quickly revive the design without losing data.
In this article, we will take a look at all possible scenarios for themes to disappear and suggest step-by-step algorithms for how to verify the integrity of system components, where to look for deleted files, and what hidden settings may block the application of the design. Follow the instructions carefully to avoid errors.
Diagnostics of the causes of disappearance of registration
Before you start taking action, you need to understand why exactly the theme on your device was missing, and users often blame viruses or critical crashes for this, although the situation is much more prosaic, and the system could automatically roll back changes after a failed update or transition to a new version of Android.
One common reason is to change your region in your smartphone settings, some themes and fonts are only available for certain geographic areas, such as India or Russia. If you accidentally or deliberately change region to Singapore or the United States, many of the design elements may become unavailable or no longer display correctly.
β οΈ Note: If you recently installed themes from third-party, unverified sources, the security system may have forced them to be removed, deeming them potentially dangerous.
Itβs also worth checking the status of the Theme app itself, which may have been updated in the background, and the new version has compatibility bugs with older configuration files, in which case standard methods of restoring through the settings menu may not work, requiring deeper intervention.
Recovery through the standard Topics app
The most obvious, but often ignored, way is to check the profile in the official store: All the themes you have ever uploaded are saved in the cloud or local app store, even if they have been removed from the desktop.
Click on the person icon in the top right corner of the screen. In the menu that opens, select My Subjects or My Purchases for paid content. This shows a list of all the designs ever downloaded. Find the one you need in the list and click Apply.
- π Make sure you are logged in to your Mi Account, otherwise your download history may be empty.
- π If the application button is inactive, try first removing the theme from the list and then downloading it again.
- π Check for the Download icon next to the topic name β this confirms the presence of a local file.
Sometimes the app requires clearing the cache to display the list correctly. Go to your phone's Settings, select Apps, find Topics, and click Clear Cache. This won't delete your data, but will update the file index.

Lock screen and desktop settings
In the newer versions of HyperOS and MIUI 14, the theme settings were partially separated, the desktop and lock screen designs can now be controlled independently, and if you lost the whole theme, you may have lost the settings of only one of these zones.
Press your finger on an empty section of your desktop to call the edit menu. The Settings button or the More button will appear at the bottom. You can select the theme source here. Make sure the tick is opposite the Topic, not Wallpaper or Video Wallpaper.
Pay special attention to the lock screen. Often users change the general theme, but forget that the lock screen has its own rules. Go to Settings β Always on screen and lock β Wallpaper carousel. If this feature is active, it can overlap a static theme.
| Interface element | Where to look for settings | Possible problem |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop | Long press on the screen β Settings | Scale down or grid down |
| Control panel | Settings β Notifications and Status Bar | "Conductor" instead of "Classic" |
| Application icons | Topics β Profile β My Topics | Conflict of icon versions |
| Fonts | Settings β Screen β Font | Font is not supported by theme |

If after applying the theme icons remained standard, go to the Theme Settings and force the icons to mix or reset them, and then apply the theme again.
Problems with access rights and permits
Android security is very careful about what permissions apps have. Themes app requires storage access to read configuration files and graphics. If these rights have been revoked after the update, the theme will not be physically able to load.
Go to Settings β Applications β All apps. Find Themes (or Themes) in the list. Click on Application Permission. Make sure you have access to Memory and Storage. Without that, the system won't be able to read the registration data.
It's also worth checking auto-starting. If the system has killed the theme process in the background, the design can fly off when it's unlocked. In the same permissions menu, find Auto-Start and activate it, which ensures that the theme service will work all the time.
β οΈ Note: Do not give the Topics app excessive rights, such as access to contacts or microphone β this could be a sign of a modified or malicious version of the app.
In some cases, resetting default permissions helps. In the theme menu, select Clear Data (not just cache, but data) This will return the application to the "post-install" state and you will have to re-accept agreements, but this often solves problems with suspended configurations.
Hidden files and backups
For advanced users who like to experiment, it is important to know that hidden configuration files exist. Themes are not only stored in the cloud, but also in the MIUI/Theme system folder in internal memory. If you backed up through Mi Cloud or Google Drive, there is a chance to recover the theme file from there.
Use a file manager, like standard Explorer or MI File Manager. Go to Internal Memory β MIUI β theme. There may be files with the.mtz extension. These are your theme files. If you find a file with the right name, just click on it to start the installation.
Where to find remote themes in the system?
If you regularly make full system backups through Settings β Advanced Settings β Restore and Reset β Backup, you can only restore the theme settings without touching personal data. Select the date when the theme was still working and tick only System Settings.
Third-party launchers and software conflicts
Often users install third-party launchers such as Nova Launcher, Microsoft Launcher or Smart Launcher to expand the functionality. However, they may conflict with the native MIUI theme. If the theme disappeared after installing such an application, the problem is most likely in it.
Try temporarily disabling a third-party launcher. Go to Settings β Desktop and select a standard System Launcher. If the theme is back, then the third-party application does not support some elements of your design. You will either have to abandon the launcher or look for a compatible theme.
- π± Some launchers require separate icon package installation to support themes MIUI.
- βοΈ Check if the launcher is not a mode "Hide icons", which can make the desktop empty.
- π Upgrade to the latest version via Google Play, as older versions may not work with newer Android 13/14.
There may also be conflicts with type change applications or system modifiers that require root rights. If you have installed Magisk or LSPosed modules, turn them off sequentially to find the culprit.

The conflict of a third-party launcher and system theme is the most common cause of visual glitches.
