Why Users Install Firmware on Xiaomi Manually
Xiaomi smartphones regularly receive updates by air (OTA), but sometimes owners need to install firmware manually. The reasons can vary from wanting a fresh version of MIUI to having to restore the device to work after a failure. For example, after a failed automatic update, the phone can hang on the logo or reboot cyclically, in which cases manual firmware becomes the only solution.
Another common situation is the transition from the global (Global) ROM) Chinese (China) ROM) Chinese versions are often updated faster, but they do not have Google services, and global ones, although they support them. GMS, And then there's the custom firmware, like LineageOS or Pixel Experience, that's used by enthusiasts to get a clean Android without a shell. MIUI.
It's important to understand that hand firmware isn't just a couple of buttons, it takes preparation, from unlocking the bootloader to choosing the right version of the software. A mistake at any stage can lead to a device being "bricked" (total inoperability), so before you start, you have to weigh the risks and make sure you act consciously.
Preparation for installation of firmware: what to do before the start
Before you start firmware, there are a few critical steps to follow: First, back up all the data. The firmware erases the device's internal memory, so photos, contacts, and apps will be lost. Use Mi Cloud, Google Drive, or physical copying to your PC via MTP.
Second, check your Xiaomi model and current MIUI. This can be done from the Settings β About phone menu. Write down the exact model name (e.g. Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G codenamed veux) to choose the right firmware.
- π Official website MIUI Global - for global firmware;
- π¨π³ Official website MIUI China for Chinese versions;
- π§ Xiaomi Firmware Updater β Firmware archive with version history.
Step three is to unlock the bootloader. Without that, most firmware methods will not be available. Xiaomi requires you to link your Mi Account to your device and wait up to 72 hours (sometimes longer) for an unlock approval. You can find instructions on the official page. Without the unlocked bootloader, you can install the firmware only through the regular Recovery, and then not on all models.
β οΈ Note: If your device was purchased in China and is powered by China ROM, You'll need a Chinese phone number to unlock the bootloader, otherwise Mi Unlock will refuse to unlock.
Method 1: Install firmware via Recovery (without PC)
The easiest method is firmware through standard Recovery, which is suitable for updating the current version of MIUI or recovering from a mild crash, and it doesn't work if you want to upgrade from Global to China ROM or vice versa, and also for downgrading the software version.
Instructions:
- Download the firmware in.zip format (for example, miui_VEUXGlobal_V14.0.5.0.TKCCNXM_...) and rename the file to update.zip.
- Move the file to the root folder of the phoneβs internal memory (not to folders!).
- Turn off the device. Press Power + Volume up to enter Recovery.
- From the Recovery menu, select the language (if available), then go to Install update.zip to System.
- Confirm the installation and wait for the process to be completed (5-15 minutes).
- After the reboot, the phone will start with a new firmware.
Download the official file update.zip
The file is renamed and is at the root of the memory.

If you've got your phone stuck on the MI logo after you've run it, don't panic. Wait 10 to 20 minutes, sometimes it takes a long time to download the first thing, and if nothing's changed after that, try repeating the procedure or using another method.
β οΈ Note: Some models (e.g. Xiaomi) 12T or Redmi K50) In addition, the standard Recovery can block the installation of informal firmware, in which case custom Recovery (for example, you will need custom Recovery, TWRP).
Method 2: Fastboot Firmware with Mi Flash Tool
Fastboot is the most reliable method, but it requires a PC connection, and it's suitable for completely flashing the device, changing the regional version of MIUI, or recovering from serious crashes.
- π₯οΈ Windows computer (7/10/11);
- π Cable USB Type-C (preferably original);
- π οΈ The Mi Flash Tool;
- π Firmware in.tgz or.zip format (unpacked in a folder).
Step-by-step:
- Install ADB and Fastboot drivers on your PC.
- Unpack the downloaded firmware in the folder (for example, C:\miui_veux).
- Turn off the phone and press Power + Volume down to enter Fastboot mode (a hare in a hat-hushanka will appear).
- Connect the device to a PC. In the Mi Flash Tool, press Select and specify the path to the firmware folder.
- At the bottom, select the firmware mode: Clean all β complete cleaning (recommended when changing the region); Clean all and lock β cleaning + locking the bootloader; Save user data β saving data (not always stable).
Flash
What if the Mi Flash Tool canβt see the device?
If an error appears in the Mi Flash Tool (e.g. 0x80070002 or 0x80070490), check:
- πΉ Correctness of the selected firmware (coincidence of model and version);
- πΉ Integrity of the downloaded archive (pump it);
- πΉ Is the boot loader unlocked (if not, unlock it).
| Mistake in the Mi Flash Tool | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| 0x80070002 | Wrong path to firmware or damaged files | Pump the firmware, unpack into a folder without Cyrillic |
| 0x80070490 | bootloader locked | Unlock with the Mi Unlock Tool |
| 0x8007001f | No drivers or port conflict | Install drivers manually through Device Manager |
| 0x80070057 | Incompatible version of the firmware | Check the device model and MIUI version |
Method 3: Install custom firmware through TWRP
If you want to install informal firmware (like LineageOS, Pixel Experience or crDroid), custom Recovery β TWRP is suitable for power users, as it requires an unlocked bootloader and knowledge of ADB commands.
Steps for installation:
- Download TWRP for your model from twrp.me (.img file).
- Install. TWRP Fastboot: Fastboot Flash Recovery twrp-3.7.0_veux.img fastboot reboot recovery
- In TWRP, make a backup of the current firmware (Backup option).
- Reset data: Wipe β Format Data (enter yes for confirmation).
- Install custom firmware: Install β choose ZIP-file β Swipe to Confirm Flash.
- After installing the firmware, repeat the step for GApps (if you need Google Play).
- Reboot to the system.
Important: Many custom firmwares do not support OTA-updates, so you have to manually update them, and some features may not work (e.g, IR-blaster NFC informally).
π‘
Before installing custom firmware, check the stability reviews on the XDA Developers or 4PDA forums. Some builds may contain bugs or may not support dual-SIM.
Frequent mistakes and their solutions
Even with strict adherence to instructions, problems can occur, and here are the most common mistakes and ways to correct them:
1. the telephone is not turned on after firmware ("brick")
- π Check the battery power - it may have run out during the process. Connect to charging for 30 minutes and try again.
- π Try repeating the firmware through Fastboot with a full cleanup (Clean all).
- π οΈ If the phone is not determined by the PC, try clamping the power + Volume down for 20-30 seconds for forced reboot in Fastboot.
2.Error "This package is for 'veux' devices; this is a'
This means you're trying to install firmware for another model. Check the code name of your device in Fastboot with the command:
fastboot getvar productAnd download the firmware for this model.
3. Hanging on the MI logo after firmware
- π If it doesnβt help, reset the cache via Recovery (Wipe) β Wipe Cache).
π‘
If the phone doesn't turn on after the firmware, don't panic - in 90% of cases it can be restored via Fastboot.
How to check the success of the firmware and what to do next
After installing the firmware, you need to make sure that everything went well.
