Why Redmi Go Needs a Special Approach to Firmware
Xiaomi Redmi Go is a budget smartphone based on Android Go Edition, released in 2019, and its uniqueness lies in the lightweight version of the operating system, optimized for weak iron (Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor, 1 GB of RAM), which makes the firmware process different from Xiaomiβs flagship models.
The main problem with Redmi Go owners is the lack of official MIUI support. The smartphone runs on βpureβ Android without a proprietary shell, which limits the possibility of updating through standard channels. Xiaomiβs last official firmware came out in May 2021 (version V12.0.3.0.PCMMIXM), and since then the device has not received security patches, which poses risks of vulnerabilities and brakes when working with modern applications.
In this article, we will analyze all the current ways to update firmware: from official (if they are still available) to install custom builds based on LineageOS or Pixel Experience. Particular attention will be paid to the preparation of the device β this stage is critical for Redmi Go due to its hardware limitations.
Preparing a smartphone for firmware: 5 mandatory steps
Incorrect preparation is the main reason for the "bricking" Redmi Go. A device with 8 GB of memory and a weak processor does not forgive errors. Before any manipulation with the firmware, follow the following steps:
- π Charge the battery to 100%. The firmware can take up to 30 minutes, and discharging during the process will lead to the inability to recover via Fastboot.
- π± Make a full backup through Settings β System system β Backup.Be aware that Redmi Go backup does not save some apps data due to Android Go restrictions.
- π Unlock. OEM Unlock in the developer settings. To do this, click on the build number 7 times in Settings β About the phone, then activate the option in Settings β System system β For developers.
- π‘ Connect to stable Wi-Fi. Downloading firmware via the mobile Internet may be interrupted due to an unstable signal, which will lead to file corruption.
- π₯οΈ Install the Mi Flash Tool (for official firmware) or Platform Tools (for custom ones). For Redmi Go, it is critical to use the Mi Flash version not newer than 20200710 - new versions may not support this device.
Warning: If you have previously installed custom recovery (e.g. TWRP), it must be rolled back to stock. Redmi Go has a feature - in the presence of informal recovery, the system can block the bootloader after a failed firmware.
All important files are saved on the PC or cloud
All antiviruses on your computer are disabled (they can block firmware files)

Official firmware: where to download and how to install
Despite the lack of updates, the official firmware for Redmi Go can be installed via Mi Flash Tool or Restore mode. The latest stable version is V12.0.3.0.PCMMIXM (Android 10 Go Edition), which can only be downloaded from the official Xiaomi website by selecting the tiare model (codename of the device).
Instructions for installation via Fastboot:
- Unpack the downloaded firmware archive in a folder without Cyrillic characters (for example, C:\RedmiGo_Fastboot).
- Turn off the phone, then press Volume Down + Power to enter the Fastboot. The screen should display the hare in the eardress cap.
- Connect the device to your PC and start the Mi Flash Tool. The program must define Redmi Go as tiare.
- In the Select field, specify the path to the firmware folder. At the bottom, select Clean All mode.
- Press Flash and wait until it is completed (about 10-15 minutes).
An alternative method is to update through recovery:
- Download the firmware in.zip format (not for Fastboot!).
- Rename the file to update.zip and place it in the root of internal memory.
- Press Volume Up + Power to Enter Recovery.
- Select Apply update from SD card β specify update.zip file.

If the Mi Flash Tool doesnβt see the device, try connecting it to another device. USB-port (preferably 2.0) or manually install drivers through Device Manager (look for "Qualcomm" HS-USB QDLoader 9008").
Install custom firmware: LineageOS vs Pixel Experience
Official support for Redmi Go is complete, but enthusiasts have developed several custom firmwares adapted for the device's weak iron.
| Firmware | Android version | Features | Download link |
|---|---|---|---|
| LineageOS 18.1 | Android 11 | Minimalist interface, no Google services by default, high stability | XDA Developers |
| Pixel Experience | Android 10 | Interface like Google Pixel, preinstalled GApps, possible lags due to 1 GB of RAM | XDA Developers |
| Havoc-OS | Android 10 | Maximum customization, but less stable on Redmi Go | XDA Developers |
The process of installing custom firmware includes 3 stages:
- Unlock the bootloader via fastboot oem unlock (you may need to link your Xiaomi account).
- Install TWRP Recovery (special version for tiare β download here).
- Firmware through recovery: first vendor.img and dtbo.img, then ZIP-firmware.
β οΈ Castom firmware on Redmi Go often suffers from camera problems (not working) HDR) and overheating with prolonged load. Check the reviews before installing XDA In the last 3 months, some of the assemblies may be abandoned.
How to check firmware compatibility with Redmi Go?
Common mistakes and their solutions
Redmi Go firmware is often accompanied by hardware-related errors, and here are the most common problems and ways to fix them:
- π΄ 7-in error TWRP when installing custom firmware - means incompatibility with the current version MIUI. Solution: First, run the official firmware through Fastboot, then try again.
- π΄ The phone doesn't turn on after the firmware (black screen) -- check if the cable is out during the process. Try clamping the Volume up. + Power for 20 seconds for forced reboot.
- π΄ Hanging on the logo MI After the update, reset the data via recovery (Wipe) β Format Data.Warning: This will remove all files from internal memory!
- π΄ Error "Invalid sparse file format at header" in Mi Flash - download the firmware again using IDM uTorrent (browsers can damage archives).
If the device stops responding to buttons, try a hardware reset:
- Turn off the phone from charging.
- Press Volume Up + Volume Down + Power for 30 seconds.
- Connect to a PC β if defined as Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008, you can try to restore through the EDL-Mode (requires an authorized Xiaomi account).

Recovery after a failed firmware: EDL-regime
If Redmi Go doesnβt respond to buttons and is not detected in Fastboot, the last chance is Emergency Download Mode (EDL), which requires a special cable or short circuit test points on the board.
Instructions for experienced users:
- Download Mi Flash Pro and firmware in.mbn format (for example, from here).
- Open the back of the phone and find test points next to the battery (for Redmi Go, these are EDL-labeled contacts).
- Connect. USB-cable to your PC, then briefly lock the test points with tweezers. HS-USB QDLoader 9008.
- In Mi Flash Pro, select the downloaded firmware and press Refresh, then Flash.
β οΈ Attention: Test points require care - improper circuiting can damage the motherboard. If you are unsure of your skills, contact the service center. EDL In the workshops starts from 1500 rubles.
Once successfully restored through EDL, the device will be in a factory-like state. All data, including photos and contacts, will be lost. To avoid this in the future, set up an automatic backup in Google Account (Settings β System β Backup β Google Backup).
Optimizing firmware to improve productivity
Even after successful firmware, Redmi Go can slow down because of 1 GB of RAM.
- π Turn off interface animation: Activate Settings β For developers, set the scale of the animation window, the scale of the animation transition and the duration of the animator on the 0.5x or off.
- Go to Settings β Applications β Special Access β Battery Optimization.
- For all applications except messengers, select Limit.
- Facebook β Facebook Lite
- Messenger β Messenger Lite
- YouTube β YouTube Go or NewPipe
- π Turn off synchronization of unnecessary data: Go to Settings β Accounts and syncs: Turn off sync for Google Photos, Google Drive, and other services you donβt actively use.
For custom firmware (for example, LineageOS) it is additionally recommended:
- Install the FrancoKernel kernel (there is a special version for tiare).
- Activate zRAM (RAM compression) through the Kernel Adiutor app.
- Disable Journaling in the file system (reduces memory wear but increases the risk of data loss if crashed).
