Owners of Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones often face a situation where the long-awaited update to the MIUI 12 shell does not automatically come via OTA (Over-The-Air), which may be due to regional restrictions, features of the device modification, or simply malfunctioning of the company's servers, in which case the only right solution is to manually install the current version of the software.
Handheld firmware not only allows you to update faster than the official mailing, but also fix many software errors accumulated in previous versions of the system. The process requires care and preparation, but it is not as complex as it may seem. In this article, we will discuss in detail all the steps necessary to safely install Recovery or Fastboot firmware.
Before you start, you need to clearly understand the difference between the types of updates. Recovery version is designed to be installed directly from the device through the recovery menu, which is easier for beginners. Fastboot version requires a connection to a PC and the use of special software, giving deeper control over the process.
Preparation of the device and collection of necessary data
The first step before any manipulation of system software is to create a full backup. MIUI 12 may require a complete memory cleanup when changing region or firmware type (for example, switching from Global to China).
You need to make sure that the battery is at least 60 percent power, and the flashing process, especially if it takes a long time due to a lot of data, is energy-consuming. Breaking power at a critical point in the system file writing process can lead to a brick of the device.
βοΈ Checklist before firmware
Itβs also critical to pinpoint your smartphone model. There are dozens of Xiaomi modifications with the same marketing names but different hardware. The firmware for the Redmi Note 9 Pro (Indian Version) is not suitable for the Redmi Note 9 Pro (Global Version).
β οΈ Note: Installing firmware from another device model is likely to cause your phone to fail. Always check the codename in your settings or on the manufacturer's website.
Where to download the official firmware MIUI 12
Finding a secure download source is the foundation of a successful upgrade. Xiaomi's official servers provide full firmware versions that contain all the necessary system files. Using third-party builds can carry the risk of malicious code or unstable operation.
There are several proven resources where update archives are structured by model and region, the most authoritative site is Xiaomi Firmware Updater, which aggregates data directly from official sources, and you can find both stable (Stable) and weekly (Weekly) versions.
Difference Between Stable and Weekly Versions
When downloading, pay attention to the file extension. For the method through the recovery menu, you need an archive with the.zip extension. If you plan to use the Fastboot method, you will need a file with the.tgz extension that contains partition images.
| Type of firmware | File extension | Method of installation | Data retention |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recovery (Stable) | .zip | Through the Recovery menu | Yeah (usually) |
| Recovery (Recovery) | .zip | Through the Recovery menu | No (full reset) |
| Fastboot | .tgz | Through PC and Mi Flash | Depends on the regime. |
| OTA (Incremental) | .zip | Local Update | Yes. |
Method 1: Installation via Recovery ROM
This is the most popular method, as it does not require a computer or complex software, you only need the smartphone itself and a pre-loaded firmware file.zip. Place this file in the root directory of the device's internal memory.
To enter recovery mode, turn off your smartphone and press the key combination. This is usually Volume Up + Power. Hold the buttons until the Mi logo appears, then release the power, keep the volume up. In the menu that appears, select the language (usually English or Chinese) and go to Install Update or Select a file.
If the system gives an error "Can't verify update", it means that you are trying to roll back to an older version or install firmware in another region without Root rights. In the standard situation, when upgrading to a newer version of the same branch, there should be no errors.

If the firmware file doesnβt appear in the Recovery menu, try moving it to the Download folder or renaming it by removing the extra characters from the title, leaving only the Latin alphabet.
Once you have selected the file, confirm the action. The process will take 5 to 15 minutes. The screen can go out and light up several times, which is normal partitioning behavior. Upon completion, the device will automatically reboot to the new MIUI 12 system.
Method 2: Fastboot and Mi Flash Tool
Fastboot is considered more reliable and βcleanβ because it allows you to completely rewrite all memory partitions, eliminating conflicts of old files, USB-cable (preferably original) and Mi Flash Tool.
First, you need to unclick the downloaded.tgz file on your computer. The path to the folder should not contain Cyrillic characters or spaces, otherwise the program may not see the files. Next, transfer the smartphone to Fastboot mode: turn it off and pinch Volume Down + Power until the image of the hare repairing the android appears.
adb devices
fastboot devicesConnect your phone to your PC. In Windows Device Manager, Android Bootloader Interface should appear in the Android Devices section. If there's an exclamation point, you need to manually install Xiaomi USB Driver drivers.
Launch the Mi Flash Tool on behalf of the administrator. Press the Refresh button to identify the connected device. Specify the path to the folder with the unpacked firmware. In the lower right corner, select the firmware mode: Clean All (full cleanup, recommended) or Save User Data (attempt to save data, but may cause errors).
β οΈ Note: When selecting Clear All mode, all your photos, contacts and apps will be permanently deleted.

Using Fastboot mode is the only way to fix software errors, cyclic reboot (bootloop) and completely clean the system of garbage.
Solving errors during the update
In the manual installation process, users often encounter error codes, one of the most common is "Zip package is not allowed," which occurs when you try to install an older firmware on top of the current one, or change region (for example, from China to Global) on a locked bootloader.
Another problem is Bootloop: If the phone is stuck on the Mi logo for more than 10 minutes after firmware, try resetting Recovery: Wipe Data β Wipe All Data. This will delete user data, but often saves the system.
- π Error 7 in Recovery: Means Android version incompatibility or a corrupted firmware file.Recheck the hash amount of the downloaded archive.
- π Device not defined in Fastboot: Replace USB-cable or port. Install current drivers ADB and Fastboot.
- π Locked Bootloader: If the bootloader is locked, you will not be able to use the Fastboot method to change region.
Also worth mentioning is the space shortage problem: MIUI 12 is a heavy shell, and it takes up to 5-7 GB of free space to install it, and if there is not enough memory, the system will not allow the installation process to start.
Optimization of the system after installation of MIUI 12
After a successful upgrade and the first boot, the system will be slower for a while, and this is the process of optimizing applications and reassembling the cache. Don't panic if the phone warms up in the first 30-60 minutes of use, which is a regular situation.
It is recommended to check the battery settings immediately after logging in. The new version of the shell may use up charge differently, so you should reconfigure the restrictions for background applications. Go to Settings β Battery β Energy Saving and select Balanced mode.
Why do we need a second launch?
Be sure to check the main modules: cameras, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS. If you performed a complete cleanup (Clean Install), the old settings could have knocked down the communication modules. In case of network problems, reset your carrier's APN settings.
