Xiaomi Mi 6, released in 2017, is still popular with users due to its powerful hardware and custom firmware installation. However, many owners face the problem of not having Russian in global or Chinese versions of the device. In this article, we will discuss all the current ways of Russification, from official updates through MIUI to install custom firmware through TWRP.
It is important to understand that the Russification method depends on the current firmware version of your Mi 6. The Chinese versions (China ROM) require complete firmware reflashing, whereas the global ones (Global ROM) can often be updated without losing data.
Before you start, check your firmware version in Settings β About Phone β MIUI. If you have a CN in the name, you have Chinese firmware, Global or EEA is global, and that depends on the method you choose.
1.Official method: Update via MIUI Updater
The safest method is to update the firmware through the built-in Updater app, which is suitable for global versions of MIUI, where Russian is already embedded in the system, but for some reason is not activated.
If you have global firmware (e.g. MIUI Global 12.5) but Russian is not listed, follow these steps:
- π± Open the Settings. β Additionally. β Language and input β Language.
- π If Russian is not on the list, go to Settings β The phone. β Updating the system.
- π Click on the three dots in the top right corner and select Select Service Pack.
- π Download the latest global firmware for Mi 6 (codename sagit) from Xiaomiβs official website and select it.
If the Russian language never appeared after the update, then your firmware was originally Chinese, in which case move on to the next method.
β οΈ Warning: Donβt try to install global firmware on the Chinese version via Updater, this will cause the error βCanβt verify updateβ. TWRP.
2. Fastboot Flashing (for Chinese versions)
If your Mi 6 runs on China ROM, the only official way to Russify is through Fastboot mode, which requires unlocking the bootloader, but retains a warranty if you use official global firmware.
First, check the status of the loader:
- Turn off the phone.
- Press Volume Down + Power to enter Fastboot.
- Connect the device to the PC and type the command: fastboot oem device-info
- If the answer is Device unlocked: false, the bootloader is blocked.
To unlock:
- π Sign up for Xiaomi and get permission to unlock (can take up to 72 hours).
- π₯οΈ Download the Mi Unlock Tool and follow the instructions.
- β οΈ After unlocking, all data will be deleted!
When the bootloader is unlocked, download the global firmware for Fastboot (file with the extension.tgz) and run it through the command:
fastboot flash all [name file].tgzDownload Mi Flash Tool| Unlock the bootloader | Download global firmware.tgz| Install ADB/Fastboot drivers | Make a backup of data-->
β οΈ Note: Fastboot firmware erases all data, including photos and apps. If you have encryption enabled, you may need to enter your password after you have firmware!
3. Install custom firmware via TWRP (for power users)
If the official methods donβt work or you want more features, you can install custom firmware with Russian, such as LineageOS or Pixel Experience, which requires an unlocked bootloader and a TWRP installed.
Advantages of custom firmware:
- π Full Russification and support for Google services.
- π More recent versions of Android (up to Android 12 for Mi 6).
- π§ Ability to fine-tune the interface.
- π There is no extra software from Xiaomi.
Step-by-step:
- Install. TWRP for Mi 6 (codename sagit) via command: fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.7.0_sagit.img
- Boot to TWRP (click Volume Up + Power).
- Backup β Select All β Swipe to Backup
- Sweep through custom firmware (e.g. LineageOS 18.1) and GApps (Google Services Package).
- Clear the cache (Wipe β Format Data β Yes).
Once custom firmware is installed, support for banking applications may be lost (due to lack of Google certification). To fix this, search Magisk and the Universal SafetyNet Fix module.
What if there is no network after the firmware?
4. Alternative methods of Russification without firmware
If you donβt want to flash your phone, you can try partial Russification:
- π² Install MoreLocale 2 from Google Play. The app allows you to force the system language to Russian, even if it is not in the settings).
- π Use a launcher with Russian support (for example, Nova Launcher or Microsoft Launcher). This does not Russify the system, but will make the menu and inscriptions on the home screen clear.
- π€ Install Gboard or SwiftKey for Russian input.
Limitations of these methods:
- β Not all system menus will be in Russian.
- β Possible errors in font display.
- β Some apps (such as Settings) will remain in English or Chinese.
π‘
If the language resets after installing MoreLocale 2 after restarting, add the application to autoboot via the battery settings (Settings β Battery β Autostart Control).
5. Solving Problems After Russification
Sometimes, when you change your firmware or language, you get some errors, and let's look at the most common ones and how to fix them.
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| No Russian language in the settings | Chinese firmware installed without global packages | Sweat Global ROM through Fastboot or install custom firmware |
| This MIUI version cannot be installed on this device | Trying to install firmware for another model | Download firmware specifically for Sagit (codename Mi 6) |
| The phone does not turn on after the firmware | Incorrectly selected firmware method or interrupted process | Repeat the firmware via Fastboot or EDL-Mode (requires an authorized Xiaomi account) |
| No mobile network. | Absent. IMS-modules or incorrect settings APN | Sweat modem.img from stock firmware or add APN manually |
If after firmware the phone is getting stuck on the MI logo, try:
- Press Power + Volume up for 10 seconds for forced reboot.
- If it doesnβt work, log in to TWRP and clear the cache (Wipe β Advanced Wipe β Dalvik/ART Cache + Cache).
- In extreme cases, repeat the firmware.
