Why is Flashtool the best way to run Redmi Note 2?
Xiaomi Redmi Note 2, released in 2015, is still popular with enthusiasts due to its maintainability and custom firmware installation. However, official support from Xiaomi has long been discontinued, and updates through OTA are not available, in which cases firmware through the Mi Flash Tool becomes the only reliable way to bring the device back to life, update the software or install a global version of MIUI.
Unlike recovery methods (via TWRP), Flashtool firmware allows:
- π Restore the brick (non-loading machine) even without access to recovery;
- π¦ Install any version of MIUI, from stable to development.
- π Bypass the boot loader lock (if properly prepared)
- π οΈ Fix system errors caused by incorrect updates.
But the process requires care: wrong actions can turn the phone into a brick or block the IMEI.
Important: The Redmi Note 2 has a unique architecture, the MediaTek Helio X10 (MT6795 processor), so it requires a dedicated Flashtool (SP Flash Tool) rather than a standard Mi Flash. This is something that many people forget, leading to errors like BROM ERROR: S_FT_ENABLE_DRAM_FAIL (0xFC0).
Preparation for firmware: what to do before the start
Before you connect your phone to your computer, follow the mandatory steps:
- Download the correct files: π₯ Official firmware for Redmi Note 2 (choose the version of hermes β the model encoded name). For global firmware, look for files marked global; π₯οΈ SP Flash Tool (version 5.1924 or later); π MediaTek Preloader drivers (without them, the computer will not see the phone in firmware mode).
Unlock the bootloader (if not unlocked):
On the Redmi Note 2, the bootloader is locked after resetting or unofficial firmware.
1. Register at https://unlock.mi.com/
2. Link your Mi Account to your phone in settings (Settings β Additional β Developer β Linking your Mi Account).
3. Connect your phone to your PC in Fastboot mode (clip Volume Down + Power).
4. Launch the Mi Unlock Tool and follow the instructions.β οΈ Warning: Xiaomi may refuse to unlock if the phone is not activated for more than 72 hours, in which case use bypass methods (e.g. EDL- mode), but they require additional knowledge.
Save important data! Firmware via Flashtool completely erases internal memory, including photos, contacts and apps. Use backup via Mi Cloud or manually copy files to your PC.

MediaTek Drivers: Flashtool wonβt see your phone without them
The most common error when you run Redmi Note 2 firmware is that your computer doesn't recognize your device in Preloader mode, because there's no MediaTek USB VCOM driver. Here's how to install them:
For Windows 10/11:
- Download the archive with drivers (for example, from here);
- Remove the files to the folder;
- Open Device Manager (Win + X β Device Manager)
- Connect the phone to the PC (without pressing buttons!);
- The Manager will have a MT67xx Preloader with a yellow exclamation point. Right-click β Update the driver β Search on this computer β Select the driver folder.
- Ignore digital signature warnings β install the driver manually.
β οΈ Warning: If the driver is not installed, turn off the driver signature check in Windows:
- Press Win + I β Update and Security β Restore β Reboot Now (under the section βSpecial Download Optionsβ);
- Select Problem Resolving β Additional Options β Download Options β Reboot;
- Press F7 to turn off signature verification.
After installing the drivers, return the security settings to the original state!
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The phone is not defined in the SP Flash Tool. | No Preloader drivers | Install drivers manually (see above) |
| Error S_FT_DOWNLOAD_FAIL | Wrong version of Flashtool or firmware | Use the SP Flash Tool 5.1924 and firmware for hermes |
| The process is 100% frozen. | Conflict with antivirus or drivers | Disable antivirus, reinstall drivers |
| BROM ERROR: S_DA_SDMMC_WRITE_FAILED | Problems with phone memory | Try another firmware or replace the memory plume |

If the SP Flash Tool gives you a PMT changed for the ROM, it must be downloaded, select the Format All + Download option in the tool settings instead of Download Only.
Step-by-step: Redmi Note 2 firmware via SP Flash Tool
Now, to the process itself, follow the instructions in strict order.
- Launch SP Flash Tool: Unpack the archive with the program and run the flash_tool.exe file on behalf of the administrator.
- Download the scatter file: On the right side of the window, click Choose and select the MT6795_Android_scatter.txt file from the firmware folder. It describes the memory structure of the phone.
- Set up firmware mode: In the drop-down menu, select Download Only (if you are flashing on top of your existing system) or Firmware Upgrade (if the phone is not turned on). What is the difference between firmware modes? Download Only - flashes only selected files without affecting user data (but does not always work stably); Firmware Upgrade - a complete system rewriting with saving IMEI and other critical data. Format All + Download - a complete reset with the removal of all content (use if other methods do not work).
- Connect the phone: Turn off the Redmi Note 2, remove the battery (if possible), then connect the USB- cable without pressing the buttons. The program should define the device as a COM- port. β οΈ Attention: If the phone is not detected, try: π Use another USB- port (better USB 2.0 on the back of the PC); π Reinstall drivers; π΅ Disable all other USB- devices.
Start the firmware:
Press the green Download button in the SP Flash Tool, which takes 5-10 minutes, and then you'll see a window that ticks Download OK.
First launch:
Turn off the phone, insert the battery (if you've been retrieved), turn it on. The first start can take up to 15 minutes - don't interrupt the process!
Critical detail: if the phone hangs on the MI logo after the firmware, then the firmware does not fit the bootloader version. In this case, repeat the process with another version of MIUI (for example, instead of V12.5.1.0 try V11.0.2.0).
π‘
Use firmware ONLY for the encoding name hermes. Installing firmware from another model (e.g., hm2014813 for Redmi 2) will cause the phone to fail!
Solving common errors in firmware
Even with the exact following of the instructions, there can be problems.
1 BROM ERROR: S_FT_ENABLE_DRAM_FAIL (0xFC0)
Reason: Incompatibility of the firmware with the bootloader version or memory damage.
Decision:
- π Try another version of the firmware (e.g., with Xiaomi Firmware Updater);
- π§ If the error is repeated, the memory chip may be damaged, repairs are required.
2. the phone does not turn on after firmware (black screen)
Reason: Incorrectly selected firmware mode or failure when writing boot.img.
Decision:
- π Repeat the firmware in Firmware Upgrade mode.
- π± Check if the charging indicator is on when connecting to the network β if not, the problem is in the hardware.
3. PMT Error Changed for the ROM, It Must Be Downloaded
Reason: The partition table (PMT) in the new firmware has changed.
Solution: Select Format All + Download mode in the SP Flash Tool, but note that this will delete all data, including IMEI (unless you backup in advance).
β οΈ Warning: If a cellular connection is lost after firmware (no network), then the NV- partition with IMEI is erased. You can restore it through an engineering menu (#4636##) or specialized utilities like Maui META, but this requires a separate instruction.
π‘
If the SP Flash Tool gives a S_FT_DA_NO_RSP error, try disabling the driver signature in Windows or using another USB- cable. Often the problem lies in an unstable connection.
How to check the success of firmware and set up a phone
After the first run, follow a few steps to make sure the firmware is correct:
- Check the MIUI version: Go to Settings β About the phone. The version should match the one you installed. If you see Unknown, the firmware went wrong.
- Test of basic features: π Check calls and mobile network; πΆ Make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are working; π See battery level (should be displayed correctly); π΅ Check the sound through speakers and headphones.
Set up a Mi Account:
If you have been through the global version, link your account to Settings β Mi Account. This will be needed for future updates.
Update the annexes:
Start Play Market (if youβve been through MIUI) and update all system applications.
If you notice a problem (for example, the camera or proximity sensor is not working), most likely, the firmware is not suitable for your phone revision.
- π Refine the exact model with fastboot getvar product (in Fastboot mode)
- π₯ Download firmware for a specific audit (e.g. hermes_global or hermes_images).
Alternative Firmware Methods: When Flashtool Doesn't Work
If the SP Flash Tool persists in making errors, try alternative methods:
1. Firmware via Fastboot (Mi Flash Tool)
Suitable if the bootloader is unlocked, and the phone at least somehow reacts to the connection to the PC.
Instructions:
- Download fastboot firmware for Redmi Note 2
- Unpack the archive in a folder without Cyrillic characters;
- Launch the Mi Flash Tool, select the folder with the firmware;
- Connect your phone in Fastboot mode (clip Volume Down + Power);
- Press Refresh, then Flash.
2 Firmware via EDL- Mode (Emergency)
Used if the phone does not respond to any buttons (full "brick"). Requires a special EDL cable or a circuit test points on the board.
β οΈ Warning: It's a risky method -- if you do the wrong thing, you can damage the board. You should see a specialist.
3. Installation via TWRP Recovery
If the phone is loaded into custom recovery, you can flash the ZIP- archive with firmware:
- Download firmware in.zip format (for example, with XDA Developers);
- Load to TWRP (click Volume Up + Power)
- Select Install β Specify firmware file β Swipe to Confirm.
Each of these methods has its own nuances, like the Fastboot won't work with a locked bootloader, and EDL requires soldering skills. Choose a method based on the state of the phone.
