When Xiaomi’s smartphone stops loading, goes into an endless reboot cycle, or hangs on the logo, it often confuses users, especially if standard reset methods don’t help. Device owners face the need to flash, but the main obstacle is the Locked Bootloader, which does not allow you to simply change system partitions or install custom recovery. This is the company’s protective mechanism to protect user data, but it also becomes a barrier in case of a serious software failure.
But locking the bootloader is not a fatal barrier to restoring the machine. There is an official Fastboot method that is available even on closed devices, provided that the official firmware is used. In more complex cases, when the software methods fail, the low-level EDL (Emergency Download) mode comes to the rescue, allowing you to write the system image directly to memory, bypassing standard security checks.
Diagnosis of the condition and preparation of tools
Before you start taking action, you need to clearly determine the current state of your smartphone. If the device turns on but does not work correctly, or if it is frozen, it is important to understand whether it responds to computer commands. USB-cable, preferably original or certified, as cheap analogues often do not provide stable data transmission, which is critical when firmware.
The main tool for interacting with the device at a low level is the Mi Flash Tool utility. This is the official software from Xiaomi, which can work with devices in Fastboot mode. You’ll also need Qualcomm or MediaTek drivers (depending on your phone’s processor), which are usually installed along with the drivers. ADB/Fastboot Without the right drivers, the computer won't see the phone in the right mode.
⚠️ Before starting any manipulations, make sure that the battery is at least 50-60%. Interrupting the recording process due to battery discharge can lead to irreversible damage to logical memory blocks, turning the device into a “brick».
It is also important to download the firmware itself. For a method with a locked bootloader, only the.tgz version of Fastboot is suitable, not Recovery (.zip), you can find it on official resources or verified firmware archives, by choosing the region (Global, China, EEA) corresponding to your device to avoid problems with communication frequencies and language packets.
☑️ Firmware preparation
Fastboot Firmware with Mi Flash Tool
This is the main and most secure way to restore the system if the bootloader is locked, but Fastboot mode is available. You need to put the phone in a special diagnostic mode. To do this, completely turn off the smartphone, and then press the power and volume buttons at the same time, and a hare in an orange cap repairing the android should appear on the screen, and the inscription FASTBOOT.
Once you connect your device to your PC, run the Mi Flash Tool on behalf of the administrator. In the program interface, press the Refresh button to detect the connected device. If a serial device appears in the list, then the connection is established correctly. Then press Select and point the path to the folder with the unpacked firmware. Important: the path should not contain Cyrillic alphabets or spaces, it is best to place the folder in the root of the disk, for example, C:\rom\.
The key is to choose the firmware method in the lower right corner of the program window. For devices with a locked bootloader, only one option is available, Clean All. This method completely erases all data and installs a clean system. The Clean All and Lock options can be unavailable or dangerous if you change the firmware region (for example, from China to Global), as this can lead to the device locking over Region Lock.
💡
If the Mi Flash Tool is a memory error or can’t see the phone, try it. USB-port USB 2.0 at the back of the system unit, or another cable, often the problem is that the connection is unstable.
After selecting the Clean All option, press the Flash button. The process will take 200 to 500 seconds. At this time, it is strictly forbidden to turn off the cable or interrupt the program. Upon completion, the status will appear to say success, and the phone will automatically restart. The first run can last up to 10 minutes.
Use of the EDL-regimen
If the phone doesn’t enter Fastboot mode, hangs on the logo, or doesn’t respond at all, EDL (Emergency Download Mode) comes to the rescue, a low-level protocol built into Qualcomm and MediaTek processors that allows you to write to memory directly bypassing the bootloader. Most modern Xiaomi requires disassembling the case and closing special contacts (Test Points) on the motherboard to enter this mode.
Windows Device Manager will have a new device in place when you successfully sign in to EDL, such as the Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008. However, starting with certain versions of MIUI, Xiaomi has implemented an authorization check for this mode. This means that the standard Mi Flash Tool may not flash the phone, requiring an authorized Mi employee account, in which case ordinary users are forced to contact service centers or use paid tools to bypass authorization.
However, for some older models or versions of the software, EDL is programmatically logged in via ADB: adb reboot edl. If the phone responds to ADB, this is the easiest way. There is also a method of logging in via Fastboot with fastboot oem edl, but it does not work on all devices with a locked bootloader.
⚠️ Attention: Entering mode EDL By disassembling the phone (closing contacts) the warranty will be void if there are traces of an autopsy. Use this method only if other methods do not help and you are aware of the risks.
Table of compatibility of regimes and methods
To make it easier for you to navigate the available recovery options, we have compiled a summary table that will help you understand what method is applicable to your situation, based on the current state of the device and the status of the bootloader.
| Status of the device | Available mode | The necessary tool | Data retention |
|---|---|---|---|
| It's working, there's access to the menu. | Recovery / OTA | Phone settings | Possibly (on update) |
| Reboot cycle / Fastboot is available | Fastboot | Mi Flash Tool | No (Clean All required) |
| Not included / Black Screen | EDL (9008) | Mi Flash Tool + Authorization | No (full wipe) |
| The bootloader is unlocked | Fastboot / Custom Rec | Fastboot commands / TWRP | Possibly (depending on method) |
As you can see from the table, the Fastboot variant is the most versatile for users with a locked bootloader who have experienced software failure. EDL mode remains a "heavy artillery" for cases where other methods have been exhausted. It is important to correctly identify the state of the device so as not to waste time on inappropriate tools.
Solving common errors in firmware
One of the most common mistakes in the Mi Flash Tool is Flash Error or Missmatching image and device. This means you are trying to flash firmware that is not designed for your specific device codename (for example, the firmware for the Redmi Note 9 Pro (curtana) on the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max (joyeuse)).
Not enough space in phone storage or Can't find flash_all.bat. The first is often solved by clearing the path to the firmware folder (make sure the path is short and without Russian letters), and the second indicates a damaged firmware archive or improper unpacking. The.tgz archive must be unpacked completely so that the folder with images and scripts can be seen inside.
What if progress is stuck at 1-2%?
Also worth mentioning is the driver problem. If your computer makes a device connection sound, but nothing appears in the Mi Flash Tool, go to Device Manager. If there's a device with a yellow exclamation point or an unknown device, you need to manually update the driver, indicating the path to the folder with Xiaomi or Qualcomm drivers.
Importance of the firmware region and account blocking
When you have a locked bootloader, it is critical to consider the region of the device. Global (Global) and Chinese (China) versions have different (partitions) and signatures. Trying to replay the Chinese version to Global through Fastboot with a lock command will cause the phone to go into a deep bootloom or require authorization of the Mi Account from which you previously signed in.
Never use the "Clean All and Lock" option when changing your firmware region (e.g., from CN to Global) unless you are 100% sure of compatibility, as this may result in a hardware lock (Hard Brick), which cannot be removed without an authorized service center account.
Also, after you have firmware and first activated, you may need to enter a password from a Mi Account that was previously synced, which is a security against theft. If you forget the data, it will be extremely difficult to restore access, so before you start firmware (if you have access to the system), you should log out of your account and disable the search for the device.
💡
Changing the firmware region on a device with a locked bootloader is only possible by the Clean All method, but blocking the bootloader after that (Relock) is dangerous and can lead to the phone inoperability.
