While the Xiaomi Redmi 4A is a computer-based firmware challenge that owners face when they want to upgrade, fix software failures, or install custom firmware, even though it was released in 2016, it is still relevant thanks to the reliability and support of the development community, but PC firmware requires care: a mistake at any stage can turn a phone into a brick.
In this article, we will discuss all the steps from tool preparation to the final system setup, focusing on unlocking the bootloader, choosing the right firmware version, and working with the MiFlash utility, and learn how to avoid common errors, such as incompatibility of firmware versions with the current state of the bootloader, which often causes failure.
If you've never flashed Xiaomi through a PC before, don't worry: the manual is adapted for beginners, but remember, the process requires 100% battery life and a stable connection to the computer, and interruption of the operation can lead to data loss or device failure.
1. Firmware Preparation: What to Do Before Starting
Before you start firmware, make sure you have everything you need, and a lack of even one component can disrupt the process halfway through.
First, check your Redmi 4A model. Go to Settings β About Phone β Model. The device can be labeled rolex (global version) or prada (Chinese version).
Second, download the official Xiaomi drivers for your PC, without which your computer won't recognize your phone in Fastboot mode. Drivers can be found on the Mi Community website under "Tools."

Install Xiaomi drivers for PC (Mi USB Driver) |
Charge your phone to 100% (minimum 80%) |
Prepare. USB-cable (preferably original)|
Make a backup of the data (firmware erases everything!)-->
We also recommend turning off the antivirus while you're running the firmware, and some security programs block utilities like MiFlash, perceiving them as a potential threat.
β οΈ Attention, if your Redmi 4A was purchased with a link to a Mi Account (for example, a used phone), after firmware may require entering the username and password of the previous owner!
2. Unlock the bootloader: why it is necessary
Xiaomi blocks the bootloader on all its devices, including the Redmi 4A. This is a security measure, but it also complicates the firmware process. Without unlocking, you will not be able to install custom software or even official firmware through Fastboot.
Unlocking will require:
- A phone-related Mi Account (mandatory confirmation by email and phone number).
- Mi Unlock Tool (you can download it on the official website).
- Internet connection (the program checks the status of the account).
The unlocking process takes up to 720 hours (30 days) for new accounts, and if your account is long-registered and actively in use, the wait can be reduced to 72 hours, which is why it is important to start preparing in advance.

Once you successfully unlock the phone, it will restart, and you'll see Unlocked in Fastboot mode. Now you can start the firmware.
3. Selection of firmware: official vs custom
There are two types of firmware available for Redmi 4A:
- πΉ Officially (MIUI Stable/Developer) β stable, but with the limitations of Xiaomi (advertising, unnecessary applications).
- πΉ LineageOS (Pixel Experience) β no Blaatware, but may be less stable.
For beginners, we recommend starting with the official firmware, which is guaranteed to be compatible with iron and easier to install, and you can download it from Miui Download, selecting the Redmi 4A (rolex) or Redmi 4A (prada).
If you want custom firmware, look for the rolex (global) or prada (Chinese) versions, and installing firmware for another modification will make the communication module or camera inoperable.
What is the danger of a firmware from another model?
Before downloading, check the hash amount of the file (MD5), which will help to avoid errors due to corrupted data. The hash can be checked using the MD5 Checker utility.
4. Install firmware through MiFlash: step-by-step instructions
Now, to the most critical stage, follow the instructions carefully, the order of action is important.
1. Transfer the phone to Fastboot mode:
- Turn off Redmi 4A.
- Press the buttons Volume down + Power before the Mi Bunny logo appears in Fastboot mode.
2. connect the phone to the PC via USB-Make sure drivers are installed (Device Manager should display Android Bootloader Interface).
3. Launch MiFlash:
Unpack the downloaded firmware archive into a folder without Cyrillic characters (e.g., C:\ROM\redmi4a).
Open MiFlash, press Select and point the way to the firmware folder.
- At the bottom of the program, select Clean all (full cleaning) or Clean all and lock (clean + lock bootloader).
Start firmware:
Press Refresh β your device should appear in the list.
Click Flash and wait until it is completed (usually 5-10 minutes).
If the process is 99 percent frozen or there is a critical partition flashing is not allowed error, you are trying to flash the locked bootloader.
- Reconnect. USB-cable to another port (better) USB 2.0).
- Run the program on behalf of the administrator.
- Disable driver signatures in Windows (via Run) β bcdedit /set nointegritychecks on).-->
5. Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Even with the right instructions, there can be problems, and here are the most common ways to solve them:
| Mistake. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Couldn't find device | Drivers not installed or USB-cable malfunction | Reinstall the drivers, try another cable |
| Flash is not done | Incompatible version of the firmware | Download the firmware for your model (rolex/prada) |
| The phone does not turn on after the firmware | MiFlash (Clean all and lock on locked bootloader) | Repeat the firmware in Clean All mode |
| Anti-rollback check | Trying to install an old version of MIUI | Use the firmware no older than the current one |
If after firmware the phone is stuck on the Mi logo, try resetting the settings via Recovery:
- Press Volume Up + Power to Enter Recovery.
- Choose Wipe Data β Wipe All Data.
- Reset the device.
β οΈ If you've been through custom software and your phone doesn't turn on, don't try to flash the official software again. MIUI Fastboot, which can cause hard brick damage, requires firmware through the EDL-The mode (only for experienced users!).
6. First setup after firmware
After successful firmware, the phone will start as new, and you'll have to go through the initial setup.
- π± Language and region selection (recommend that you specify the real region for proper network operation).
- π Wi-Fi connection (required for downloading updates).
- π Linking a Mi Account (if you donβt do it now, you may have sync problems later).
- π² Recovering data from a backup (if it was created through Mi Cloud).
If you have stitched custom firmware (like LineageOS), you may need to install Gapps (Google services) after the first download. Download the appropriate package (like Open Gapps ARM 7.1 Pico) and run it through TWRP Recovery.
Also check the main functions:
Calls and mobile internet (set up APN manually if there is no automatic configuration).
Camera and microphone (launch the camera app and take a test shot).
- Fingerprint sensor (if used).
π‘
After the firmware, be sure to check the version of MIUI in Settings β About Phone. If it does not match the installed one, then the firmware was incorrect, and the procedure must be repeated.
7 How to return the official firmware if something went wrong
If after experimenting with custom firmware, the phone began to work unstable, you can always return to the official MIUI.
1. Download the latest stable version of MIUI for your model from the Xiaomi website.
2 Unpack the archive and run through MiFlash in Clean All mode.
3. If the phone does not load, use Recovery:
- Download the firmware in.zip format (for example, miui_ROLEXGlobal_V12.5.1.0.zip).
- Rename the file to update.zip and place it in the root of the phoneβs memory (through a memory card or OTG-cable).
In Recovery, select Install update.zip to System.
If these methods don't work, the last option is EDL-mode firmware, which requires special equipment (Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008) and knowledge of fastboot commands. For beginners, we recommend contacting the service center.
