Modern Xiaomi smartphones have a powerful architecture that allows you to perform complex system operations without the use of cumbersome desktops. Often there is a situation when the computer is not available, and you need to update the operating system or restore the device to work urgently. Fortunately, the MIUI and HyperOS ecosystem provides built-in tools for autonomous work with firmware.
The process of flashing directly from the device may seem difficult for beginners, but in fact it boils down to a strict adherence to the algorithm of actions. The main condition for success is the integrity of the downloaded file and sufficient battery power. In this article, we will discuss all the nuances of how to update the system, bypassing the cable connection to the PC.
Preparation of the device and necessary conditions
Before any manipulation of the system partition is critically important to ensure the stability of the hardware. battery charge should be at least 60%, as a sudden power outage during data recording can lead to irreversible consequences for the loader.
Temporary decompression files can take up a significant amount of space, so free up at least 5-8 GB of space, delete unnecessary video files or transfer them to cloud storage.
Make sure to back up important contacts and photos. Even with a regular update through Recovery, there is minimal risk of losing user data, especially if you change the firmware region or Android version.
Make sure your device is connected to a stable Wi-Fi network. Downloading a system image can weigh between 3 and 5GB, and using mobile traffic is not only costly but also less reliable due to possible connection breaks.
Update method through built-in loader
The safest and easiest way to upgrade Xiaomi is to use a regular update menu, which is suitable if the phone is switched on and running correctly, but requires installing a newer version of the software that the server has not yet sent automatically.
First, you need to activate the hidden features in the Update app. Find the current version of the system and click on it seven times in a row with your finger, and then in the upper right corner there will be a menu of three dots.
β οΈ Note: If you download firmware manually, make sure it's designed for your model. Using a file from Redmi Note 10 on Redmi Note 11 will turn the device into a brick".
Select "Select a firmware file" and specify the path to the pre-downloaded.zip file. The system will check the checksum of the file. If the check is successful, the installation process will begin.
The phone will automatically reboot to Recovery mode and start installing. The screen will go out, the Mi logo will appear and the progress lane will appear. Don't touch the device at this point, the process can take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes.
Using Recovery Mode for ZIP Installation
If the standard update doesnβt work or you want to roll back to an earlier version, Recovery mode is used. Itβs a dedicated environment that works independently of the main operating system.
To get into this menu, turn off your smartphone completely. Then press both the power button and the volume button at the same time. Hold them until the logo appears, then release the power, but keep the volume up.
In the Recovery menu, the navigation is done with volume buttons (up/down), and the power button is selected. However, in newer versions of MIUI, the control is often touch-sensitive. Find "Install Update Zip" or "Select file".
- π Make sure that the firmware file is at the root of internal memory, not in folders.
- π Check the charge level again before entering recovery mode.
- π« Do not interrupt the process, even if the screen appears to be stuck on the logo.
Once you have selected the file, the system will request confirmation. Agree and wait for completion. Once you have successfully installed, select "Reboot to System".

Solution: File verification error
Often users will encounter a message saying βCanβt verify updateβ or βFile canβt be updatedβ when you try to install a version with a lower build number on top of a new one (downgrade) or if the file is corrupted.
To bypass the downgrade restriction or install regionally different firmware (e.g. Global on China), an unlocked Bootloader is sometimes required. Without unlocking, Xiaomi prohibits installation of unofficial or other builds.
The error may also be due to the wrong file format: the firmware must be.zip, but not renamed by the user; the archive must contain an image folder or installation script.
β οΈ Warning: Attempts to bypass the signature verification via the Engineering Mode on new models with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and later often result in a bootloader lock permanently.
If the file is downloaded from the official Mi Community or Xiaomi Firmware Updater website, verification problems usually do not arise, provided that the region is the same.
Compatibility table of firmware methods
Not all methods are suitable for every situation. Below is a comparison table that will help you choose the right path depending on the condition of your smartphone.
| Condition of the telephone | Available method | I need a PC. | Risk of data loss |
|---|---|---|---|
| It's working fine. | Update via menu | No. | No. |
| Cyclical reboot | Recovery Mode | No. | High-pitched |
| Black Screen (Fastboot) | Fastboot (Mi Flash) | Yes. | Complete cleaning |
| Loader locked. | Only official OTA | No. | No. |
As you can see from the table, if the phone is completely dead and doesn't respond to buttons, you can't do without a computer, unfortunately, but for software failures and updates, the methods without a PC are effective.
