EDL (Emergency Download Mode) is the last chance to bring back to life Xiaomi, which turned into a βbrickβ after a failed firmware, update failure or experiments with custom ROM. Unlike the standard Fastboot, EDL allows you to flash the device at a low level, even if the bootloader is locked or damaged system area. But working with this mode requires caution: one wrong step β and the smartphone can finally fail.
Many users fear EDL because of the myths of βburnt phonesβ or βlost IMEIs,β and in fact, with the right approach, the risks are minimal, and the key is to understand that EDL gives access to the deviceβs internal memory at the Qualcomm level, which allows you to recover even those smartphones that donβt respond to the power button, but it requires special drivers, firmware for a particular model and patience.
In this article, we'll take you through the whole process from A to Z, from tool preparation to solving common bugs, learn how to log into EDL on a blocked Redmi or POCO, where to download official firmware, and why you sometimes have to use "authorized" accounts to unlock. And if you've never flashed a smartphone before, don't worry: we'll explain each step in as much detail as possible.
What is EDL and when is it needed
EDL (Emergency Download Mode) is an emergency boot mode built into Qualcomm chipsets, which are used in most Xiaomi smartphones. Unlike Fastboot, which operates at the bootloader level, EDL allows you to interact directly with the device's internal memory via a USB interface.
- π The smartphone does not turn on after a failed firmware (the so-called soft brick").
- π The bootloader is locked and standard unlock methods donβt work.
- π± The device does not respond to buttons and is not determined by the computer in Fastboot.
- π§ You need to repair damaged boot, system or modem partitions.
- π‘ The network was lost after the firmware was lost. IMEI or damaged modem).
Itβs important to understand that EDL is not a magic wand, it wonβt help if the problem is hardware (e.g., a motherboard is burned or an eMMC chip is damaged), and itβs not supported on devices with Mediatek chipsets (which use BROM Mode). To find out which chipset your Xiaomi has, check the model on the GSMArena website or in the specifications on the official website.
Another nuance: starting in 2020, Xiaomi tightened control over EDL. Now, for firmware through this mode, authorization is often required through an official Mi Account with a connection to the device, which we will explain in detail in the section on unlocking.
Preparation for firmware: what will be needed
Before you go to firmware, make sure you have everything you need. Not even one component can lead to bugs or bad firmware. Here's the full list:
- π» Computer on Windows 7/10/11 (MacOS or Linux may have driver problems).
- π Original. USB-cable (better the one that came with the smartphone) cheap cables often don't provide stable connection.
- π Charge at least 30% (If the phone is fully discharged, recharge it. 10-15 minutes before the firmware.
- π₯ The official firmware can be downloaded from the official Xiaomi portal (authentication required). Xiaomi Firmware Updater (unofficial but reliable source).
- π Mi Flash Tool is the official tool from Xiaomi. QFil (Qualcomm Flash Image Loader) is an alternative for older models. EDL Tool β for forced transfer to the mode EDL.
- π Qualcomm drivers HS-USB QDLoader 9008 (without them, the computer will not see the device in the computer) EDL).
Pay special attention to the choice of firmware. It should correspond to:
- The exact model of your device (e.g., Redmi Note 10 Pro is sweet, and POCO X3 Pro is vayu).
- A region (Global, China, EEA, India) where firmware in the wrong region can lead to network or language problems.
- MIUI versions (stable or developmental)
If you are downloading firmware from unofficial sources, check its hash (MD5 or SHA1) through a utility like 7-Zip or HashMyFiles.

How to Get Into EDL Mode on Xiaomi
You can log in to EDL in a number of ways, depending on the state of your device. If your smartphone is switching on but is unstable, use the software method. If it is not responsive to buttons or is stuck on the logo, you will need a hardware method.
Method 1: Through a button combination (for working devices)
If the phone is turned on but you want to flash it through EDL (for example, to restore the IMEI or change the region), follow the following steps:
- Turn off the device.
- Press the Volume Up + Volume Down buttons and connect the USB cable to your computer.
- Hold the buttons for 10-15 seconds until the device is identified in Task Manager as Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008.
Method 2: Through test points (for "bricks")
If the smartphone doesn't respond to the buttons, you'll need to disassemble it and close the test points on the motherboard, a technique that's suitable for devices that:
- π΄ Not included at all (black screen).
- π They are on the Mi or Fastboot logo.
- π΅ Not defined by the computer in any mode.
Instructions:
- Remove the back cover and battery (if it is removable).
- Find test points β usually two metal contact pads labeled EDL or TEST POINT. Their location depends on the model: Where are the test points on popular models? Redmi Note 8/8T (ginkgo/willow): next to the battery connector, two dots labeled EDL. POCO X3 NFC (surya): under the protective film near the camera, two dots without labels. Redmi Note 9 Pro (joyeuse): next to the USB-C connector, two dots in the shape of a triangle. Mi 9 (cepheus): under the metal screen with the battery pack.
