Xiaomi Redmi Note 8T is a popular smartphone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor, but even it is not immune from turning into a βbrickβ after a failed firmware, reset or experiments with custom ROM. If your device does not turn on, hovers on the Mi logo, or your computer does not see it β do not rush to carry into the service. In 80% of cases, the device can be restored yourself using Xiaomi official tools and the correct sequence of actions.
In this article, we have 3 proven methods for building the Redmi Note 8T (codename willow), including Fastboot, EDL, and Mi Flash Tool. We will discuss how to determine the type of βbrickβ where to download the correct firmware, and what to do if the smartphone does not respond to any commands. Important: the procedure requires an unlocked bootloader (if it was blocked before) and using firmware strictly for your model β firmware from Redmi Note 8 or Note 8 Pro will not work!
1.Diagnostics: What type of "brick" does your Redmi Note 8T have?
Before you start firmware, determine how badly the system is damaged, and the choice of recovery method depends on it:
- π Soft-brick: The smartphone is turned on but got stuck on the Mi logo, rebooted cyclically or not loaded beyond animation.Solution: firmware via Fastboot or Recovery.
- π Hard-brick: the machine doesn't respond to buttons, it doesn't respond to a computer, the screen is black. EDL (emergency).
- π Brick after locking the bootloader: the smartphone turns on, but gives an error This device is locked or Fastboot unauthorized. Solution: unlock through Mi Unlock Tool + firmware.
To accurately diagnose the problem:
- Connect the switched off smartphone to the PC via USB.
- Press Volume Down + Power for 10 seconds - if the Fastboot menu comes up, it's a soft brick.
- If there is no reaction, try the combination Volume up + Volume down + Nutrition (for EDL).
- Check Device Manager on PC: if a Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 device appears, it is a hard brick.
β οΈ Note: If the smartphone has not previously unlocked the bootloader through the Mi Unlock Tool, firmware through the Fastboot will not be possible without prior unlock. EDL No unlock is required, but an authorized Xiaomi account is required (see section 3 for more details).
2. Preparation: What is needed for firmware?
Before you start, you can gather everything you need, and without the right tools, you risk making the problem worse.
List of required files and programs:
- π± Firmware for Redmi Note 8T (Download only from official sources: Xiaomi official website (select Fastboot) ROM Xiaomi Firmware Updater (alternative source with the latest versions).
- π» Firmware tools: Mi Flash Tool (for Fastboot and Fastboot) EDL). Platform Tools (ADB/Fastboot) Qualcomm drivers (for example, for Google) EDL) β Download here.
- π§ Additional software: Mi Unlock Tool (if the bootloader is blocked). 7-Zip or WinRAR for unpacking firmware.
Also prepare:
- π Cable USB Type-C (preferably original, without damage).
- π» Computer on Windows 7/10/11 (Mi Flash Tool requires Net Framework 4.5+).
- π Charge your smartphone by at least 30% (if it reacts to charging in any way).
| Type of firmware | File size | For what occasions? | Do you need unlocking? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fastboot ROM | 2-3 GB | Soft brick, system failures | Yes. |
| Recovery ROM | 1.5β2 GB | Update via Mi Recovery | No. |
| EDL Firehose | 50β100 MB | Hard brick, lack of reaction | No (but you need an authorized account) |
β οΈ Warning: If you download firmware for another model (e.g. Redmi Note 8 codenamed ginkgo), the smartphone will finally turn into a brick.
βοΈ Preparation for the Redmi Note firmware 8T
3. Method 1: Firmware through Fastboot (for soft brick)
This method is suitable if the smartphone enters the Fastboot mode (represents a hare in a hat-eared), the procedure erases all data, but restores the system to work.
Step-by-step:
- Unpack the firmware: Download the Fastboot ROM (file with the extension.tgz or.zip) unpack in the folder C:\MiFlash\rom. Inside should be a folder with files.img.
- Install drivers: Connect your smartphone to Fastboot (click Volume Down + Power) and wait for the drivers to install in Device Manager. If Android Bootloader Interface comes along, it's okay.
- Launch Mi Flash Tool: Open the program on behalf of the administrator. In the Select field, specify the path to the folder with the unpacked firmware.
- Select firmware mode: At the bottom of the Mi Flash window, there are 3 options: Clean all β complete cleaning (recommended), Clean all and lock β cleaning + lock the bootloader (only if it was unlocked!), Save user data β data storage (not always working).
Start the firmware
Press Refresh, the device should appear in the list. Then click Flash. It takes 5-10 minutes.
Wait for the reboot.
After successful firmware, the smartphone will restart. The first turn on can take up to 15 minutes - don't disconnect it from USB!
If the Mi Flash Tool is an anti-rollback error, you're trying to flash an older version of the software than the one you installed.
- Download a newer firmware (check the version in the file name).
- Or use EDL (method 3) if the Fastboot is not available.
π‘
If the Mi Flash Tool freezes by 99%, disconnect the smartphone from the USB, press the power button for 20 seconds, then repeat the firmware.
Method 2: Firmware through Recovery (if Fastboot is not available)
If the smartphone is loaded into Mi Recovery (a menu with an android robot and the inscription No command), you can try installing Recovery ROM. This method does not require unlocking the bootloader, but does not work in all cases.
Instructions:
- Download Recovery ROM: The file must have the.zip extension (donβt unpack it!).
- Rename the file: For convenience, rename it to update.zip and place it in the root of the internal memory or SD-map.
- Boot in Recovery: Turn off your smartphone, then press Volume Up + Power until the menu appears.
- Select the language: In Mi Recovery, tap the flag and select English (or Russian if available).
- Install firmware: Go to Install update.zip to System β select update.zip β confirm installation.
- Wait for completion: After successful installation, select Reboot to System.
If Recovery doesn't have Install update.zip, then your menu version doesn't support this method.
- Try resetting your settings via Wipe Data (but it doesnβt always help with bricks).
- Use Fastboot or EDL (methods 1 or 3).
β οΈ Note: If you install Recovery ROM smartphone stuck on the logo, repeat the procedure, but pre-execute Wipe Data in the Recovery menu.
What happens if Recovery does not open?
5. Method 3: Firmware through EDL (for hard brick)
EDL (Emergency Download Mode) is an emergency mode for recovering devices on Qualcomm processors. It works even if the smartphone is not turned on and is not detected in Fastboot. However, this method requires an authorized Xiaomi account (or bypass through Firehose firmware).
Step-by-step:
- Install Qualcomm drivers: Download and install the driver for QDLoader 9008 (link in section 2). Device Manager should appear Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008.
- Download. EDL-Firmware: For the Redmi Note 8T Firehose firmware or official EDL-See the file from Xiaomi. XDA or 4PDA by Willow edl firmware.
If the Mi Flash Tool requires a Mi Account and you donβt have one, there are two options:
- π Use login bypass through patched Firehose files (see on the 4PDA in the Redmi Note theme 8T).
- π± Contact the Xiaomi service center β they will sew the device under warranty (if it is valid).
π‘
Firmware via EDL is the only way to restore the Redmi Note 8T if it doesnβt respond to buttons and is not defined in Fastboot. However, this method requires accurate firmware and the right drivers, otherwise the risk of finally βkillingβ the device increases.
Possible errors and their solutions
Even with the correct following of the instructions, errors can occur, and let's consider the most common ways to eliminate them:
| Mistake. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Anti-rollback check | Trying to run the old version of the software | Download a newer firmware or use EDL. |
| Device not found in Mi Flash | No drivers or smartphone installed in Fastboot/EDL | Reinstall the drivers, check the connection. |
| Sahara fail or firehose fail | Inappropriate EDL-firmware | Download a different version of Firehose for willow. |
| 99% Freezing in Mi Flash | Driver conflict or antivirus blocking the process | Disable the antivirus, use another USB-port. |
| This device is locked | bootloader locked | Unlock through Mi Unlock Tool (requires account binding). |
If after the firmware smartphone:
- π Cyclically rebooting. β Run Wipe Data in Recovery or repeat the firmware with the Clean All option.
- π΅ Not catching the net. β Check that you have a firmware for your area (for example, EEA Europe).
- π No charge. β wait 1-2 hours (sometimes after firmware the charging controller is reset).
π‘
If your IMEI is missing after the firmware, restore it using the engineering menu (#4636##) or the SN Write Tool (requires an IMEI backup).
7. How do you avoid bricks in the future?
To avoid repeating the recovery procedure, follow the following simple rules:
- π² Don't interrupt the firmware -- even if it's been delayed, wait until it's finished. USB Half the process is guaranteed to turn the smartphone into a brick.
- π Do not block the bootloader after unlocking (the Clean all and lock option in Mi Flash is dangerous!).
- π Check the firmware version before installing it β it should be newer or the same version as the current one (due to anti-rollback).
- π οΈ Don't install custom. ROM without unlocking the bootloader and backup of the original firmware.
- β‘ Keep an eye on battery power β only stitch when the charge level is above 50% to avoid shutting down in the middle of the process.
If you like to experiment with the scalp:
- Create a persist backup (responsible for IMEI and network settings).
