Many Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphone owners will sooner or later face the desire to install alternative firmware β whether itβs custom MIUI with advanced features, Pixel Experience for pure Android or LineageOS for stability. However, the official process requires unlocking the bootloader, which involves waiting for permission from Xiaomi, loss of warranty and the risk of a βbrick.β
In this article, we will discuss three really working methods of installing custom firmware on Xiaomi without unlocking the bootloader, their limitations and potential risks. It is important to understand that none of these methods provides a 100% guarantee of success β it all depends on the device model, the version of MIUI and the current state of the system. But if you are ready for experiments, these instructions will help you save time waiting for a breakup or even bypass it completely.
Why Xiaomi is blocking the bootloader and can it be bypassed?
Xiaomi has introduced a forced bootloader lock on all devices since 2016.
- π‘οΈ Security β Protection against data theft in case of loss of a device.
- π Ecosystem Control β Preventing the Installation of Uncertified Software.
- π§ Stability β Minimizing the βbricksβ from incorrect firmware.
However, the real motive is often associated with the binding of users to the branded services Mi Account, Mi Cloud and advertising model of monetization. Unlocking through the Mi Unlock Tool requires:
- π Expectations 7β30 days (depending on account).
- π± Device Links to Mi Account.
- π Connection to PC and use of official software.
There are several non-breakthrough bypasses, but they are all based on exploiting vulnerabilities in the recovery system (Recovery) or bootloader. Xiaomi regularly closes such holes in new versions of MIUI, so the methods do not work on all devices.
β οΈ Note: Installing firmware without unlocking the bootloader can result in permanent device lock (hard-brick) if you interrupt the process or use incompatible files.
Method 1: Installation via Fastboot with Check-Bypass (EDL)
The most reliable way to flash Xiaomi without breaking the bootloader is to use EDL (Emergency Download Mode) mode, which is suitable for devices on Qualcomm chips (most flagships and mid-budget models) and requires:
- π₯οΈ Computer with Windows and Qualcomm drivers HS-USB QDLoader 9008.
- π Firmware in.mbn or.elf format (special "engineering" versions).
- π Cable. USB Data support (not all cables are suitable!).
Algorithm of action:
- Download the Mi Flash Tool and firmware for your model (for example, for Redmi Note). 10 Pro, it's gonna be a file. sweet_global_images_....tgz).
- Put the phone in mode. EDL: Turn off the device. Press the volume up. + Loud down and plug in. USB-Hold the buttons for 10-15 seconds until Qualcomm appears in the Device Manager. HS-USB QDLoader 9008.

Important: This method does not work on devices with MediaTek chips (e.g. Redmi 9A, POCO M3) and on newer models with Anti-Rollback protection (e.g. Xiaomi 12 and later).

Method 2: Use of Recovery Vulnerability (TWRP without separation)
Some Xiaomi devices allow custom Recovery (TWRP) installation without unlocking the bootloader through an exploit in standard MIUI Recovery. This method works on a limited list of models, including:
- π± Redmi Note 8/8T (ginkgo/willow)
- π± Redmi Note 9 Pro/9S (joyeuse/curtana)
- π± POCO X3 NFC (surya)
Instructions:
- Download the special version TWRP for its model (for example, twrp-3.7.0_12-0-ginkgo.img).
- Rename the file to recovery.img and place it at the root of the phoneβs internal memory.
- Go to standard Recovery: Turn off your phone β Press Power + Volume Up β Select Language β Connect with MIAssistant
- From the Recovery menu, select Install update.zip to System, then click on the three dots in the upper right corner and select Choose update package.
- Specify the path to recovery.img and confirm the installation. Once you reboot, you will have TWRP.
After installation TWRP You can flash any compatible firmware (for example, Havent). OS or ArrowOS via Install β Select Storage β Choose. ZIP-file.
β οΈ Note: On devices with Dynamic Partition (such as the Redmi Note 10 Pro), this method can lead to a boot cycle. TWRP!

Method 3: Firmware through ADB Sideload (for Sideload) A/B-device)
Xiaomi devices with support A/B-Partitions (e.g. Xiaomi Mi) A2, POCO F1) allow you to install the firmware through ADB Sideload without unlocking the bootloader. This method works if:
- π The device supports fastbootd (checked by the command fastboot getvar all).
- π¦ The firmware is adapted for installation through ADB (zip format with update-script support).
- π Regime on. OEM Unlocking in the developer settings (even without a real breakup).
Step-by-step:
- Activate Developer Mode (7 times click on the MIUI version in Settings β About Phone).
- Enable USB Debugging and OEM Unlock in Settings β Additional β For Developers.
- Connect your phone to your PC and execute commands: adb reboot bootloader fastboot reboot fastboot fastboot flash:raw boot magisk_patched.img # (If you need root, fastboot reboot recovery
- In Recovery, select Apply update β Apply from ADB.
- On PC, do: Adb sideload custom_rom.zip
This method is suitable for firmware on the basis AOSP (Pixel Experience, but it doesnβt work with the company MIUI-Firmware from third-party developers.

Risks and consequences of firmware without unlocking
Installing custom firmware without an official bootloader is fraught with serious problems.
| Problem. | Effects of consequences | How do you minimize it? |
|---|---|---|
| Hard-brick | The device is not powered on, not determined by a PC. It requires soldering of the eMMC or replacement of the motherboard. | Use only verified firmware for your model, check the hashes of the files. |
| Anti-Rollback | Lock the bootloader when you try to roll back on the old version of MIUI. | Don't flash MIUI versions older than the current one. |
| Loss of IMEI | Lack of network, non-functional SIM-map. | Save the backup nvram and modem before the firmware. |
| Blocking Mi Accounts | Requirement to enter a login / password after reset. | Untie your account before firmware or use a patch no_verity_opt_encrypt. |
Even if the firmware was successful, you may encounter:
- π΅ Network problems (not working) 4G/5G, drop-off).
- π Accelerated battery discharge (due to unoptimized core).
- πΈ A broken camera (no drivers for custom firmware are available).
π‘
Before you run your firmware, be sure to check the firmware compatibility with your model on the XDA Developers or 4PDA forum. Even if the names are the same (e.g. Redmi Note 10 Pro and Redmi Note 10 Pro Max), internal designations (sweet vs sweetin) may differ!
Alternative ways of customization without firmware
If the risks of firmware without unlocking the bootloader seem too high, consider alternative customization methods:
- π¨ Themes and launchers: Install Nova Launcher or Hyperion Launcher to change the interface without interfering with the system.
- π§ ADB-Disable unnecessary system applications (e.g. pm uninstall) -k --user 0 com.miui.analytics).
- π± Root without custom Recovery: Use Magisk with a patch boot.img via fastboot (requires unlocking) OEM, but not bootloader).
- π MIUI Optimized: Lightweight firmware based MIUI with remote Bloatware (e.g, MIUI Mix).
For most users, these methods are sufficient to:
- Delete the ads in MIUI.
- Increase the time of autonomous operation.
- Change the appearance of the system.
- Access advanced settings (e.g., change DNS via Private DNS).
The advantage of such methods is the preservation of the warranty and the possibility of rollback to factory settings at any time.

If your goal is to remove ads and bloatware, you just need to get root rights through Magisk without full firmware, which is less risky and reversible.
