Introduction: Why and when to re-examine Xiaomi
Reflashing Xiaomiβs smartphone is a process that has many users mixed feelings, from the fear of βbreakingβ the device to the desire to get new features. In fact, properly executed firmware can solve many problems, from bugs in the system to recovering the βbrickβ after a failed update. But it is important to understand that this is not a universal solution for all cases of life.
The main reasons for Xiaomiβs flashing are the release of a new version of MIUI with bug fixes, the desire to install custom firmware (for example, Pixel Experience or LineageOS), the need to return the device to factory settings after a virus attack, or even the banal desire to remove advertising in the corporate shell. However, before starting the process, you should honestly answer the question: do you really need it? Sometimes problems are solved by simply resetting settings or cleaning the cache.
In this article, we will discuss all the current methods of firmware (via Fastboot, Recovery and OTA), discuss in detail the preparation of the device, choosing the right version of firmware and solving typical errors. Particular attention will be paid to unlocking the bootloader, a mandatory step for most methods. All instructions are relevant for models of 2020-2026 release, including the Redmi Note series, POCO and the flagship Xiaomi 13/14.
Preparing the device for firmware: 5 mandatory steps
Unprepared firmware is like a non-antiseptic operation: even if it goes well, the risk of complications remains high. Let's start with the most important thing: backup data. Although some firmware methods retain user files, a full backup is mandatory. Use Mi Mover to transfer data to another smartphone or cloud service (Google Drive, Mi Cloud), especially photos, contacts and messages β their recovery after a reset may not be possible.
The second critical point is battery power. Make sure it's at least 60 percent charge. Fastboot firmware can take up to 30 minutes, and if the device shuts down in the process, you'll get a brick. Also check the USB cable: it's better to use the original Xiaomi or certified USB-C/Micro-USB (depending on the model). Cheap cables often cause data errors.
- π Battery charge β₯60% (optimally 80-100%)
- π± Backup of data (photos, contacts, SMS)
- π Original. USB-cable USB 2.0 on PC
- π₯οΈ Installed drivers Mi Flash Tool and ADB
- π Serial number and IMEI devices (in case of blocking)
It is equally important to determine the current MIUI version and device model. To do this, go to Settings β About the phone. Write down the exact model name (e.g. Redmi Note 12 Pro+ 5G, not just "Note 12") and the MIUI version (e.g. V14.0.5.0.TMCCNXM). This information will be needed to select the right firmware. Please note: firmware for global (Global), Chinese (China) and European (EEA) versions are not interchangeable!
Unlock the bootloader: without it anywhere
If you plan to flash your device through Fastboot or install custom firmware, unlocking the bootloader is a must. Xiaomi locks the bootloader on all devices to protect against unauthorized access. The unlocking process is officially supported by the company, but has its own nuances.
The first thing you need to do is link your Mi Account to your device.
- Go to Settings β Xiaomi Account and log in.
- Enable Settings β Additional β For developers β Unlock OEM.
- Connect the device to your PC and start the Mi Unlock Tool (you can download from the official website).
Important: Xiaomi has put an unlock limit on the account, which requires a 72-hour wait (previously 7 days) for all models released after 2021. If you try to unlock the bootloader immediately after the bootload is attached, the tool will give you a "Couldn't unlock" error. Also note that unlocking resets the device to factory settings!
β οΈ Attention: Unlocking the bootloader will void the warranty on the device. If the smartphone is warranty, it is better to contact the service center for an official update.
| Xiaomi model | Supports unlocking? | Waiting (hours) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 12/13 | Yes. | 72 | Requires the latest version of the Mi Unlock Tool |
| POCO F5/X5 | Yes. | 72 | For global versions |
| Xiaomi 13/14 | Yes. | 72 | Chinese versions may require additional authorization |
| Redmi 10A/10C | Yes. | 168 (7 days) | For old models. |
Once successfully unlocked, the device will automatically reset, and you can now flash it through Fastboot or install custom recovery (TWRP), but remember that some banking applications (such as Sberbank Online or Tinkoff) may block work on devices with the unlocked bootloader due to security policies.
Xiaomi firmware methods: which one to choose?
There are three main ways to firmware Xiaomi devices, and the choice depends on your goal and the current state of the smartphone.
1. Firmware via Fastboot (bypassing Recovery)
This is the most reliable way, and it's even suitable for "brick" devices that don't boot into the system, and it's done via a PC using the Mi Flash Tool.
- β It works even if the device is not turned on.
- β Allows you to run any version MIUI (including downgrade)
- β Minimum risk of errors when performed correctly
Disadvantages: requires an unlocked bootloader, erases all data, and if errors can finally "kill" the device.
2. Firmware through Recovery (locally)
Suitable for updating the current version of MIUI or installing official firmware without losing data (if you choose the option "Save user data").
- β Does not require unlocking the bootloader for official firmware
- β User data can be stored
- β Easy and faster than Fastboot
Cons: does not work on locked devices with a damaged system, the choice of firmware is limited.
3. OTA-renewal (over air)
The safest and easiest way, but with limited features. Only suitable for upgrading the current version of MIUI to the new version through Settings β System Update.
- β Automatic process without risk of error
- β All data and settings are stored
- β Does not require unlocking the loader
Disadvantages: you can not choose the firmware version, often come updates with a delay.

For most users OTA-update - the best choice. Fastboot is only needed in cases of recovery from failures or installation of custom firmware.
Step-by-step: Firmware via Fastboot
This is a method that requires maximum concentration, because mistakes here can lead to irreversible consequences. Let's start with the preparation of tools.
- π₯οΈ Computer running Windows 7/10/11 (For the Mi Flash Tool)
- π Firmware in.tgz format for your model (download from the official website)
- π οΈ Mi Flash Tool (last version)
- π Cable USB (preferably original)
Now let's get to the process:
- Turn off the device and press Volume Down + Power to enter Fastboot mode. Connect your smartphone to your PC.
- Unpack the firmware archive into a folder without Cyrillic characters (e.g., C:\Xiaomi\ROM).
- Launch the Mi Flash Tool on behalf of the administrator. Press Select and point the path to the firmware folder.
- At the bottom of the window, select firmware mode: clean all β complete cleanup (recommended) save user data β data retention (not always stable) clean all and lock β cleaning + bootloader lock (only for official firmware)
Refresh
Flash
The process will take 5-15 When it's done, it automatically restarts. USB-cable before full system load (may take up to a maximum of one) 10 If after the firmware, the smartphone stuck on the logo MI, Reset through Recovery (Loudness upwards) + Nutrition β Wipe Data).
Fastboot | Firmware unpacked in root folder |Mi Flash Tool launched from admin |Clean all Selected mode | Cable connected to USB 2.0 port-->
β οΈ Note: If the Mi Flash Tool gives you a βflash not doneβ error, check: Compatibility of the firmware version with the device model Archive integrity (download firmware) Chinese characters on the way to the firmware folder Often the problem is solved by reconnecting USB-cable.
Firmware through Recovery: save data
This method is suitable if you want to update the current version of MIUI without losing data or install the official firmware on a working device. The main advantage is that you do not need to unlock the bootloader for official firmware. However, there is a limitation: you can not flash a version older than the current one (downgrade is possible only through Fastboot).
Instructions:
- Download the firmware in.zip format from the official website (choose Recovery ROM).
- Rename the file to update.zip and move it to the root folder of the deviceβs internal memory.
- Go to Settings β About the phone β System update.
- Click on the three dots in the upper right corner and select "Select firmware file".
- Please specify the path to update.zip and confirm the installation.
The device will reboot to Recovery mode and start the installation process. Importantly, don't interrupt the process or turn the device off. If the firmware is stuck in the testing phase, wait. 10-15 Minutes β sometimes itβs about optimizing apps after updating.
What if the Recovery Firmware Ends in an Error?
Once you've successfully firmwareed, the device will restart, so if you've chosen the data saving option, all the applications and files will stay in place, but sometimes you can reset your network or account settings, which is normal. You can manually restore them.
Solving Common Mistakes When Facing Xiaomi
Even if you follow the instructions accurately, you can get errors, and let's look at the most common ones and how to solve them.
| Mistake. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Couldn't unlock the Mi Unlock Tool | 72 hours after the account was linked | Wait for a specified time or check that the account is linked to the device |
| Flash not done in Mi Flash | Incompatible firmware or damaged archive | Check the device model and integrity of the archive (download) |
| The device is not defined in Fastboot | No drivers or cable problem | Install Qualcomm or MediaTek drivers, try another cable/port |
| E: Unknown command in Recovery | Damaged Recovery or unofficial firmware | Switch to Fastboot (fastboot flash recovery.img) |
| Hanging on the MI logo after firmware | Version conflict or incomplete firmware | Run Wipe Data in Recovery or flash it over Fastboot |
If the device doesn't turn on at all after the firmware is installed (black screen, no button response), this may indicate a hardware problem or a complete bootloader reset, in which case only contacting the service center stating that you have performed official firmware will help.

If your IMEI is missing or your network is not working, try restoring it via Engineering Mode. Type ##4636## in the dialer, go to Phone Information and select Restore IMEI. If this doesn't work, you'll need to run the nvram module through Fastboot.
