Introduction: Why unlocking a bootloader isn't always necessary
Xiaomiβs smartphone firmware has traditionally been associated with the need to unlock the bootloader, which requires waiting 7-30 days, binding a Mi Account and the risk of losing the warranty. However, there are legal and semi-legal ways to upgrade or reflash the device without unlocking β both through official tools and by using workarounds for power users.
In this article, we will discuss three working methods: updating through MIUI Updater with circumvention of restrictions, installing fastboot firmware through the Mi Flash Tool with a closed loader (for some models), and using custom recoveries (for example, OrangeFox) on devices with vulnerabilities in the bootloader.
Importantly, none of these methods is 100% guaranteed to succeed, and the probability depends on the model, the MIUI version, the regional firmware, even the serial number of the device, and if your goal is to just upgrade to the latest version, start with the official methods.
Method 1: Upgrade via MIUI Updater bypassing regional restrictions
The safest way is to use the built-in MIUI Updater, but with a little trick: force the change of the firmware region. This works if your device is locked to the old version due to Xiaomi's policy (for example, for Russian models after 2022).
Algorithm of action:
- π± Install the app MIUI bootloader (available on Google Play or via APKMirror).
- π In the application settings, select a region EEA (Europe or Global β this will bypass local restrictions.
- π Find your model (e.g. Redmi Note 10 Pro) β sweet) and download the full firmware (file with the extension.tgz).
- π Rename the file to update.zip Put it in the root of your internal memory.
- π Go to Settings. β The phone. β Update system, click on three dots in the upper right corner and select Select firmware file.
If the device is stuck on the MI logo after the reboot, donβt panic: wait 10-15 minutes. 90% of the time, the system will recover automatically. If not, you will have to use fastboot (see next method).
β οΈ Warning: Forced region change may result in resetting settings (including data in apps) and disabling certain features, such as, NFC For Russian bank cards, make a backup copy via Mi Cloud or Google Drive before the procedure.
Method 2: Firmware through the Mi Flash Tool with a closed loader
This is a good way to use Qualcomm Snapdragon devices (e.g. Redmi Note 9 Pro, POCO X3 NFC, Mi 10T) because Xiaomi sometimes signs fastboot firmware for service centers that can be installed without unlocking, and the key is to find the right version.
Step-by-step:
- Download the Mi Flash Tool from the official Xiaomi website (version no lower than 20200716).
- Find firmware for your model on resources like Xiaomi Firmware Updater or 4PDA. Look for files marked fastboot and a stable global version (for example, V12.5.3.0.RJWMIXM).
- Unpack the archive into a folder without Cyrillic characters (e.g., C:\MIUI\fastboot).
- Turn off the phone, press Volume Down + Power to enter the fastboot (screen with a rabbit in its cap).
- Connect the device to your PC, launch the Mi Flash Tool, specify the path to the firmware folder, and press Refresh. If the device is determined, select Clean all (not Clean all and lock!) and press Flash.
Download the latest version of Mi Flash Tool | Check the model and code name of the device | Find fastboot firmware with the signature Xiaomi | Disable the antivirus while the firmware | Charge the phone at least 60%
-->
If the process ends with an anti-rollback error, you are trying to install an older version. MIUI, In this case, it's only going to help unlock the bootloader or the firmware through the EDL-Mode (requires an authorized Xiaomi account).
| Xiaomi model | Code name | Does the firmware support without unlocking? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 9 Pro | joyeuse | Yes (EEA/Global) | Requires firmware version not lower than 12.0.1 |
| POCO X3 NFC | surya | Yes (Global) | It does not work for Indian versions (IN) |
| Mi 10T / 10T Pro | apollo | Partially. | Firmware only up to 12.5.4 |
| Redmi Note 8 Pro | begonia | No. | Requires unlocking due to MediaTek |
Method 3: Install custom Recovery through loader vulnerabilities
For advanced users, there is a way to flash custom Recovery (for example, OrangeFox or OrangeFox). TWRP) without unlocking the bootloader, using vulnerabilities in the bootloader of old versions MIUI. This method works on devices before MIUI 12 (2020) and requires root rights or ADB-access.
Instructions for Redmi Note 7 (lavender) and similar models:
- Install ADB and Fastboot on your PC (download Googleβs Platform Tools).
- Enable USB Debugging in Settings β About Phone β MIUI Version (click 7 times on the line with the version, then go back to Additional Settings β For Developers).
- Connect the phone to your PC and execute the command: adb shell su dd if=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/recovery of=/sdcard/recovery.img This will back up the standard recovery.
- Download OrangeFox for your model and scroll through fastboot: fastboot flash recovery orangefox.img fastboot reboot recovery
What to do if your phone is stuck in the bootloop?
β οΈ Warning: This method can result in loss of warranty and lockdown IMEI (Xiaomi also regularly closes vulnerabilities in new versions. MIUI, The chances of success fall with each update.
Risks and how to minimize them
Any firmware without unlocking the bootloader comes with risks, and here are the main ones and ways to avoid them:
- π Device Brick: If you interrupt the process or choose the wrong firmware, the phone can turn into a brick. EDL-Mode (requires an authorized Xiaomi account or contacting a service center).
- π Blocking Mi Account: With frequent firmware changes, Xiaomi can block your Mi Account for suspected fraud. The solution is to use one account for all transactions and not flash more than 1 time a month.
- π΅ Loss of communication: Some models will no longer use VoLTE or 4G. Solution: Switch modem files separately through TWRP.
To reduce the risks:
- π Always use a battery charge of at least 70%.
- π‘ Use the original. USB-cable (better from the set).
- π₯οΈ Check in from a PC on Windows 10/11 (on macOS/Linux There may be problems with drivers).
π‘
If the sound is lost or the sensor is not working after the firmware, try resetting the settings via Wipe β Advanced Wipe β Dalvik / ART Cache + Cache in the custom Recovery. This often solves problems without losing data.
Frequent mistakes and their solutions
Even with the right actions, there can be mistakes.
| Mistake. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Couldn't verify the device in Mi Flash | The discrepancy between firmware and model | Download firmware specifically for your codename (e.g. curtana for Redmi Note 9S) |
| Anti-rollback check fail | Trying to roll back on the old version | Sweat a newer firmware or unlock the bootloader |
| The phone does not turn on after the firmware | Mi Flash (Clean All and Lock) | Repeat the firmware with Clean All or Save User Data mode |
| Invalid sparse file format at header | Firmware file damaged | Download the firmware again, check the checksum MD5 |
If you see an error This package is for "xxx" devices; this is a "yyy," you're trying to flash the firmware for another model, like the Redmi Note 8 (ginkgo) and Redmi Note 8T (willow) are different devices, despite the similar names.
π‘
Before firmware, always check the code name of your model through the command adb shell getprop ro.product.device or in the application CPU-Z. Error in choosing firmware is the main reason for "bricking" devices.
Alternatives: When nothing helps
If all of the above methods fail, there are still a few options:
- π§ EDL-Mode: Requires an authorized Xiaomi account (you can buy on specialized forums) or contact a service center".
- π¦ Firmware through TestPoint: Physically closing contacts on the board for forced entry into the EDL. Risky for beginners - requires disassembling the phone.
- π οΈ Call to the service: Some workshops offer firmware without unlocking for 1000-3,000 rubles. EDL Illegal accounts β this can lead to blocking IMEI.
For devices on MediaTek (e.g. Redmi Note 8 Pro, POCO X3 Pro), there is an SP Flash Tool, but it requires unlocking the bootloader or authorized auth-file from Xiaomi. Without this, the firmware will end in an SLA Auth error.
