In this article, we will discuss all the current ways to install Mi Play firmware, from official updates via MIUI Updater to custom builds via TWRP and Fastboot. We will focus on unlocking the bootloader, a key step without which most methods simply will not work, and you will find solutions to the typical errors that users face when running this device.
It's important to understand that flashing is not only a way to upgrade your phone, but also a risk of getting a brick if you do the wrong thing. So make sure to back up your data and charge your battery to at least 60 percent before you start, and if you're a beginner, we recommend starting with the official methods and then moving to custom firmware.
1. Firmware Preparation: What to Do Before Starting
Before you start the firmware Xiaomi Mi Play, you need to follow a few critical steps, neglecting them can lead to data loss, malfunctioning of the phone or even its complete inoperability.
First, check the current version of MIUI and Android. Go to Settings β About your phone. Write down this data β it's going to be needed to choose the right firmware. For example, if you have a MIUI 12 based on Android 9, you can't flash MIUI 14 directly for Android 11 β you'll need an intermediate upgrade.
Second, unlock the bootloader (if it is locked). Without that, most firmware methods will not be available. Xiaomi blocks the bootloader on all devices by default, and it takes up to 720 hours (30 days) of waiting to unlock the bootloader after the account is tied. More on this is in the next section.
- π± Save important data: contacts, photos, messages.
- π Battery charge: at least 60%, better 80%. interruption of the process due to discharge can "brick" the phone.
- π₯οΈ Install drivers: Mi Phone Manager or ADB/Fastboot PC drivers.
- π Download firmware: official from the Xiaomi website or custom with XDA Developers.
β οΈ Note: If your Mi Play is purchased in China (the domestic version), the firmware is global or European. MIUI This may cause problems with Google Services and 4G-Check the model in the settings β The phone. β Version. MIUI β if there are letters CN, It's the Chinese version.
2 Unlock the bootloader on Xiaomi Mi Play
The bootloader on Xiaomi Mi Play is locked by default, which means you wonβt be able to install custom recovery (TWRP) or flash the unofficial firmware until you unlock it. The process is multi-step and requires you to link your Mi Account to your device.
The first step is to link your Xiaomi account to your phone.
- Go to Settings β Xiaomi Account and log in.
- Enable Settings β Additional β For developers β Unlock OEM.
- Turn on USB debugging in the same menu.
Then connect the phone to the PC and confirm the debugging permission.
Next, download the official Mi Unlock Tool and follow the instructions. Importantly, once you have an account attached, you will have to wait 720 hours (30 days) if you have never unlocked a bootloader on that account before. If the account has already been used to unlock other Xiaomi devices, the wait is reduced to 360 hours (15 days).
What happens if you stop waiting for unlocking?
When the wait is over, connect your phone to your PC in Fastboot mode (turn off your phone, then press Volume Down + Power), launch Mi Unlock Tool and press Unlock. If it went well, you'll see a message Unlocked successfully. You can now install TWRP or stitch custom builds.
β οΈ Attention: Unlocking the bootloader resets the phone to factory settings and deletes all data, including files on internal memory. Also, some features, such as Find Device (phone search) and Mi Cloud, may not work correctly on custom firmware.
3. Ways of firmware Xiaomi Mi Play: which one to choose?
There are three main methods of firmware Xiaomi Mi Play, each of which is suitable for different purposes, the choice depends on your tasks: whether you just want to update the official firmware, install custom build or restore the phone after a crash.
| Method | When to use | Do you need to unlock the bootloader? | Risk of "bricking" |
|---|---|---|---|
| MIUI Updater (official update) | Update to new MIUI without losing data | β No. | β οΈ Low. |
| Fastboot (official firmware) | Recovery after failure, switch to another regional version of MIUI | β Yes. | β οΈβ οΈ Medium. |
| TWRP + Custom ROM (Castom Firmware) | Install unofficial builds (LineageOS, Pixel Experience, etc.) | β Yes. | β οΈβ οΈβ οΈ High-pitched |
| EDL Mode (Emergency Mode) | Restoration of the brick (if the phone is not turned on) | β Yes (sometimes requires an authorized account) | β οΈβ οΈβ οΈβ οΈ Very tall. |
For most users, the most secure upgrade will be through MIUI Updater, which does not require unlocking the bootloader and saves all the data, but only works for official firmware and does not allow custom builds to be installed.
If you want to upgrade to a newer version of Android (like Android 9 to Android 11), youβll have to use Fastboot or TWRP. The first is for official firmware, the second is for custom firmware. Importantly, when you run Fastboot, all data will be erased, even if you choose to save data in the Mi Flash Tool.
π‘
For beginners, it is recommended to start with official methods (MIUI Updater or Fastboot). Castom firmware requires experience and can contain bugs, especially on budget devices like the Mi Play.
4. firmware via MIUI Updater (without data loss)
This is the easiest and safest way to upgrade to Xiaomi Mi Play if you want to stay on the official firmware. The method does not require unlocking the bootloader and is suitable for installing incremental updates (for example, from MIUI 12.0.1 to MIUI 12.0.2).
Instructions:
- Go to Settings β About the phone β System update.
- Click on the three-dot icon in the upper right corner and select Select the update file.
- Specify the path to the downloaded firmware file (should have the name of the type) miui_MIPLAYGlobal_V12.0.1.0.PFIMIXM_... and extension.zip).
- Confirm the installation and wait for the reboot.
If the update is not installed, check:
- π Compatibility of the firmware with your current version (cannot be flashed) MIUI 14 overhead MIUI 10 without intermediate updates).
- π Firmware file integrity (compare hash sum) MD5 formal).
- π Battery charge (must be at least 50%).
β οΈ Note: If you update through MIUI Updater phone hangs on Mi logo for longer 10 Just wait a minute, don't force it to turn it off. 20-30 Minutes -- sometimes it takes a long time to optimize applications. If nothing has changed after that time, try Recovery. + Power) and perform Wipe Cache.
5. Firmware via Fastboot (official firmware)
Fastboot method is suitable for installing official firmware if:
- You want to switch to a different regional version (e.g., from Chinese to global).
- The phone does not turn on or freeze in the loading cycle.
- You want a clean installation with no remnants of old data.
To run through Fastboot, you will need:
- π₯οΈ Computer with drivers installed ADB/Fastboot.
- π Official firmware in.tgz format (you can download here).
- π οΈ The Mi Flash Tool.
Step-by-step:
- Unpack the downloaded firmware in a folder without Cyrillic symbols on the way.
- Turn off the phone and turn it into Fastboot mode (Loud down + Power).
- Connect your phone to your PC and start the Mi Flash Tool.
- In the program, click Select and specify the path to the folder with unpacked firmware.
- Select firmware mode: clean all - complete cleaning (recommended). save user data - saving user data (may cause failures). clean all and lock - firmware with bootloader lock (only for official firmware).
Flash
Download the correct firmware version (Global/EEA/China)
Install Mi Flash Tool and Drivers
Unlock the bootloader (if not unlocked)
Charge your phone to at least 60%
Make a backup copy of the data-->
Critical: If the Mi Flash Tool gives you a "flash not done" or "invalid image" error, check the firmware version, which must match the phone model (pyxis) and region, for example, you can't flash Chinese firmware onto the global version of the phone without first unlocking the bootloader and changing the region.
6. Install custom firmware through TWRP
If you want to install informal firmware (like LineageOS, Pixel Experience, or HavocOS), youβll need custom recovery β TWRP. This method requires an unlocked bootloader and a higher level of training.
Steps to install TWRP and custom firmware:
- Download the latest version of TWRP for Mi Play (pyxis) from the official website.
- Put your phone in Fastboot mode and go TWRP Team: Fastboot Flash Recovery twrp-3.7.0_9-0-pyxis.img fastboot boot twrp-3.7.0_9-0-pyxis.img
- In TWRP, run Wipe β Format Data (this will delete all data, including internal memory!).
- Transfer the custom firmware file (.zip) to your phone via MTP or ADB Sideload.
- Install the firmware through Install β Select a file β Swipe to Confirm Flash.
- After installing the firmware, it is recommended to flash Magisk (for root rights) and GApps (if they are not in the assembly).
π‘
Before installing custom firmware, check reviews on the XDA forum. Some builds may have problems with the camera, Wi-Fi or battery. Also note the date of the last update - if the firmware hasn't been updated for more than a year, it may be unstable.
β οΈ Note: Castom firmware often does not support data encryption on Mi Play, which means that once installed, you will not be able to use the pattern lock or PIN-Google Pay and other services that require SafetyNet may also not work.
7. Solving typical firmware errors
Even with strict adherence to instructions, errors can occur, and let's look at the most common problems and ways to solve them.
| Mistake. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| This device is locked (in the Mi Flash Tool) | The bootloader is not unlocked | Unlock the bootloader through the Mi Unlock Tool (see Section 2) |
| Invalid sparse file (in TWRP) | A firmware file or incompatible version of TWRP is damaged | Download the firmware again and check for MD5. Update TWRP to the latest version |
| phone is stuck on startup Mi logo after firmware | Incompatible firmware or incomplete data cleanup | Go to Fastboot and run the official firmware through the Mi Flash Tool with the clean all option |
| Error: 7 in TWRP | The firmware is designed for another model or region. | Check firmware compatibility with pyxis. Remove assertion check from updater-script (requires knowledge) |
| No network after firmware | Implemented firmware for another region (for example, Chinese on the global version) | Sweep through the correct regional version or install the modem via TWRP |
If the phone stops turning on (the βbrickβ), try to restore it using EDL Mode (Emergency Download Mode).
- Turn off the phone.
- Press Volume up + Volume down + Power for 10-15 seconds.
- Connect the phone to a PC β it should be defined as Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008.
- Use the Mi Flash Tool or QFil to firmware the official image.
Important: Recovery through EDL Mode requires an authorized Xiaomi account with firmware rights in this mode. Without it, the Mi Flash Tool will give an βaccount not authorizedβ error.
